jeff zeleny is with the sanders campaign and has some news for us. jeff, a powerful speech for bernie sanders. what's next for him? >> jake, it was a powerful speech. of course he said that iowa started the revolution here. so he's going to take that energy on to new hampshire, where he's leading so much in the polls, has so much energy. but i'm told by a senior strategist to the sanders campaign that they do not expect a final result tonight. they have been told by iowa democratic party officials that there are 90 precincts across the state of iowa out of some 1,800 precincts that do not have a result. but never mind that. senator sanders said it's basically a tie, they will split the delegates and go to new hampshire. but jake, i can tell you the most important element of the speech at least in the short term is the fund-raising possibility of it. senator sanders has built an enormous online fund-raising capacity, more than barack obama, more than any other politician of this era. so this is going to be a very big moment for him going forward. and a

jeff zeleny with the sanders campaign in rochester, minnesota. jeff, what are his advisers telling you? >> reporter: wolf, senator sanders is going to arrive here in a few hours, about three hours or so. he's still actually outside dallas where he's been rallying supporters. there's no question they wanted to get as far away from south carolina as possible. their advisers don't think a win is possible, within reach. they're hoping to minimize a massive defeat there. but they are going to forward. they are saying this is a delegate fight. how democrats pick their nominees are all by delegates. not winner take all. it's not how many states you win. it's the delegates. so they are looking at minnesota, at colorado, at massachusetts, at vermont, at oklahoma. but, wolf, the reality here is that this race may change tonight. the dynamic of this democratic race may change tonight. just a week ago, it's important to remember, sanders campaign thought they had a potential win on hand in nevada. that didn't happen. this is the end of the beginning of the fi

senior washington correspondent jeff zeleny joining us from portsmouth. sanders gained more ground in iowa after a review of the caucus results? >> reporter: as he presses on here in new hampshire his team is still talking about his team in iowa. the iowa democratic party after they would not review the results for caucus's on monday has made a review of 14 precincts. neither of them turned out to be -- just like they were on that night but in five precincts, there were different results. we're not talking about a lot of delegates here but it is a sliver. the clinton campaign was actually losing .122 state delegate equivalent. so they are at 49.84%. the sanders campaign gained .1053 so they are at 49.59%. bernie sanders did a touch better than we thought on monday night. the outcome is still the same, as far as we know, but this is a sign that the iowa democratic party is willing to look into other precincts, is willing to look into other things. the sanders campaign has not made a big deal about this. we heard him say at the debate that they have moved o

jeff zeleny is with the clinton campaign. he has the latest through her swing in tennessee. >> reporter: john and christine, with just one full day of campaigning before super tuesday, hillary clinton and bernie sanders are in a different race. hillary clinton stopped at churches in memphis and rally in nashville and on to arkansas. her attention shifted suddenly. she has been talking about bernie sanders for so many weeks calling him a single issue candidate. raising questions of his plans being realistic. she had donald trump in mind on sunday. let's take a listen. >> i believe america is great right now. what we need is to be whole. we need to be whole where all of us have a place. where everybody feels like we're all in this together. that is what i want to do in this campaign and it is what i want to do as your president. >> reporter: this democratic primary fight is far from over in terms of delegates. 56% of the delegates selected in march. tomorrow and then again on saturday. the moment has changed in the race. hillar

oh, so fickle voters will hold the key to the primary election. >> jeff zeleny, thank you. on the republican side, a fascinating dynamic is emerging. donald trump seems to be out in front, but a bunching of candidates vying for second place. look at that group. trump has a different tone in new hampshire. softer and gentler. unlike iowa, he is doing retail politicking. handshaking with voters. unlike iowa, he is playing the time tested political game of lowering expectations. >> so if i had two seconds, i think i'm doing -- i would much rather win. i would say if i came in second or third, i'd be thrilled. that way i would lower expectations. i know about expectations. if i came in second, i wouldn't be happy. now if i come in second, you can go around and say boom. i would much prefer to win in new hampshire. >> a heavy handed attempt. that is the donald trump side of things. as for the pack behind him, jeb bush has found new life in new hampshire. his supporters are hoping this is the state that will turn things around. he calls trump a loser for mocking a new york report

jeff zeleny was getting to the crux of the campaign. will the bernie sanders voters who we have seen at events all over the state, will they show up to caucus? >> absolutely. the question is will this look like 2008 when barack obama turned out and another liberal icon, harold dean puttered out here in iowa. the key issues to watch are the college towns and ames and iowa city. story in johnson county. if bernie sanders wins, not by a little bit, but absolutely crushes hillary clinton, it is a good sign for him if he has a chance to make up her advantages in urban areas. >> it does get complicated. there is only so much of an advantage to run up the score in college towns. the bottom line is this, bernie sanders is better served to get people in the college towns than to go to the urban areas. >> we know how much delegates each county has. it is not like turning out a ton of people at a college. so barack obama had an advantage in 2008. the iowa caucuses were a month earlier and the students were at home. they could caucus in their home

let's go to cnn's jeff zeleny in manchester, new hampshire. close numbers in iowa between these two candidates. how is that going to shape the way the people of new hampshire vote, do we know? >> reporter: .3 of 1% is separating these two democrats here right now. the people of new hampshire often had a mind of their own. they often look at what happens in iowa but they don't necessarily embrace what they do. so that's what i found on the ground here today. talking to voters, they certainly were paying attention to what was going on but were not going to necessarily embrace it. this is a different contest on the democratic side. bernie sanders is somewhat of a favorite son. he's from vermont, of course. they share media markets. he's been over here. bernie sanders has such a strong lead here. the clinton campaign is calling themselves the underdog here. when you're hillary clinton, it's hard to really be the underdog, anderson. >> so are the campaigns doing anything different based on the results in iowa? >> reporter: sure. she is stepping up

wolf. >> jeff zeleny, thanks very much. let's get more on the breaking news now.ing information we're getting, we have new information right now about what voters said they were looking for in a democratic presidential candidate. our political director, david chalian, has been going through these numbers. what are they telling us? >> this is a really interesting finding about the democratic electorate because we asked voters as they left the polls today if they wanted to continue barack obama's policies or move in a more liberal or less liberal direction. take a look at these numbers. 40% of the democratic primary electorate today in new hampshire wants the policies to be more liberal than president obama's policies. 41% wants to continue obama's policies. 14% less liberal. we also asked about candidate qualities. what are you looking for. here again, just like the republican side, electability not a factor. if you are a candidate making the case you're the one that can win in november, voters haven't that interested. only 13% is interested in electability. they'r

let's go to jeff zeleny who is traveling with the clinton campaign. jeff, what are you hearing from campaign officials? >> reporter: jake, i can tell you she is en route here to deliver a speech, but a very different kind of speech that she, of course, wanted to give. now, there are signs of life here at this rally. you can probably see behind me. that was not the case a few moments ago. they turned on some pretty loud music and are getting the crowd fired up, but jake, beyond this loud music, there is deep worry in the hearts and minds of clinton supporters. i talked to one senior clinton supporter from here in new hampshire who said he believes that their message was muddled. he believes she does not have a succinct of a message as bernie sanders and that's one of the reasons that they are actively talking about a bit of a campaign shakeup, an adjustment here. they do not -- they underestimated bernie sanders. they underestimated how much he would resonate with the populist strain in the party right now and they are going to try and retool her messag

john and christine. >> jeff zeleny for us following the bernie sanders campaign. here with me at the mars cafe in des moines, iowa, is colleen mccain nelson and then eric bradner. i get beat up on on twitter for not noticing the bernie sanders crowds. they are passionate and electric. it is unbelievable. it is impressive. what are the strengths of that and what are the limitations? >> you are absolutely right. without fail, the crowds are electric and so enthusiastic. every time. everywhere he goes, he draws a huge crowd. he goes to places he has chosen strategically. he appeals to a specific section of the democratic party. some people outside of the democratic party. he is popular in college towns in iowa and in urban areas. he is not popular everywhere in iowa. he goes place is where he can draw big crowds. there are advantages to that, but question marks related to that. bernie sanders is relying on notably unreliable voting blocks. he is counting on young people and who never caucused before or don't have an attachment to the democratic party to come out and

also jeff zeleny and political correspondent brianna keilar. angela, how successful?iously senator sanders started with a big deficit among african-american voters particularly in the south and elsewhere. how successful has he been at chopping away at that? >> from a messaging standpoint, very successful. he's weaved in mass incarceration, cruminal justice reform and economic disparities into his overall talking points and message. the problem i think so far with bernie sanders is that he's done very well from a messaging standpoint. he repeats himself often. the issue is, he's resonating with folks who are so anti-establishment, they haven't turned out yet to show their support for him. so if they are anti-establishment to the point they aren't voting, i don't think that's success. >> jeff, look at south carolina for a moment. hillary clinton well out in front of sanders there. how much of an impact could a win there for clinton have in terms of momentum going into super tuesday? >> i think it's very significant. just think where we were a week ago and a week and a h

. >> our senior washington corresponden correspondent, jeff zeleny, from manchester where the clintonsave been campaigning. explain exactly what bill clinton was talking about and what he's saying today. >> reporter: wolf, this was yesterday when bill clinton was out on the campaign trail by himself. he was trying to rally the new hampshire voters. and he was trying to get people to draw a bit more attention and more scrutiny to bernie sanders' campaign and his record. and that particular moment, he was talking about a group of sanders supporters, sometimes called bernie bros. generally male supporters on line who have been very critical and made sexist comments about people who support hillary clinton. now bernie sanders has disavowed all of the comments. he told jake tapper on cnn yesterday that he does not condone any of that. that was bill clinton trying to draw attention to some of the negative attack that they believe they're up against. then he did several negative attacks of his own. -sa -he said that senator sanders has not been as pure on fund-raising. it was different today.

jeff zeleny, we heard the relief again sort of echoed by hillary clinton. where is the focus now moving forward? >> brooke, the focus moving forward is on the next seven days in new hampshire. it was the narrowist of wins. the sanders campaign, one of the reasons they're not contesting this is the sanders campaign has so much strength here, but they also view this as a victory in its own right, a moral victory, an ideological victory and they're raising a lot of money off it. but no question about it, hillary clinton has shaken the sort of specter of iowa from her back that's really been hanging over her campaign. ever since she got in almost a year ago. she lost there eight years ago, as she said. that has sort of always haunted her. it was the very first thing she said when she arrived at her first rally here today. >> it is great to be here with all of you and i am so thrilled i'm coming to new hampshire after winning iowa! i could tell you, i've won and i've lost there. it's a lot better to win. >> it's a lot better to win. another similarity with this
