our jennifer gray is watching this. so jennifer, bring us up to date. >> very, very powerful storm. large tornado on the ground right around beaver crossing. this tornado warning is going to be in effect for the next 30 minutes or so. most likely extended this storm, this very dangerous storm is rolling parallel pretty much to i-80, beaver crossing, milford, denton, nebraska needs to be on the lookout. if this storm holds together could be on top of you within the hour or so. confirmed tornado on the ground. could be a very large tornado. you need to immediately get into your safe spot, small interior room, no windows, lowest level of your house. milford, denton, lincoln state off i-80. this is a very powerful storm. you can see the greens and reds right next to each other right near beaver crossing, that's an indication of just where this tornado is. that's an area of circulation. this is all part of this larger system. severe thunderstorm warnings all across of the country's midsection just to the west of kansas city. if these hold together they'll be in your neck of the woods in

jennifer gray is with me, dan simon is with me. fire on the right side just swirling. >> it is eerie. >> it is incredibly eerie. it's the winds that are coming in from the desert that is fuelling this. they pull from east to west bringing very, very dry hot air from the desert. you also have this down sloping off of the mountains and pushing to the west. that is fuelling these fires. it brings the humidity levels into the dingle digits. these winds should start to flip a little bit and we should get more of an on shore breeze. that's air coming in off of the ocean. >> that's the air full of moisture. that's what they need. thank you very much. don't go too far. i will go back over to you in carlsbad, california, here. who has lost everything. she and her family have been walking through trying to find pictures, mo men toes. can you just walk me through it? >> it's just a chart. this is the garage. it's tough to really discern. you can see, for example, these are some of the things that they have been able to see. a hat that looks l

meteorologist jennifer gray is tracking a very dangerous storm system for us. jennifer, what do our viewers need to know? >> they need to know it's coming up on rush hour and they need to stay right where they are, especially if they are in detroit trying to get home. we have nasty storms headed your way, even if they are not pro us doing tornadoes, they are still producing hail, up to half an inch in diameter and also winds up to 60 and maybe even 70 mile-per-hour gusts. we have a funnel cloud reported just on the west side of taylor and this storm on the southwest side of detroit. this tornado warning in effect until 5:30. it's headed for you. get into that safe spot that we have told you about. get into an interior room. frenchtown and monroe, to the south of detroit, you have a very nasty storm headed in your direction. a tornado warning means that these storms are capable of producing a tornado. a radar-indicated tornado has been spotted with these storms and they are very, very dangerous and headed to the southwest side of detroit. >> jennifer gray, thanks

jennifer gray, we'll get back to you., ken, the director of the california department of fire protection. what's your analysis right now? how bad is it? >> hi, good afternoon, wolf. obviously it's everything we said it would be this fire season and it's obviously very early. we're seeing conditions, you're showing them there on tv. fires burning with intensity that would normally see in august. so it is fire season in california. >> is it under control? or are they still expanding and getting even more dangerous? >> well, obviously with the weather report you just gave and the conditions we're seeing, we have the potential all afternoon for new fire starts. we've seen, you know, we probably have between five and six larger fires burning right as we speak. obviously we're aggressively fighting all of them, moving resources throughout southern california to meet that need. and we're doing well at gaining the upper hand on many of them and obviously others, we're continuing to put resources on them until we can get full cont

jennifer gray has that. good morning, jennifer. >> good morning to you guys.are going to see a little bit of rain in texas. that's going to be the trouble spot as we go through memorial day. we could see the possibility of severe weather. we're talking about damaging winds, large hail, and even the possibility of an isolated tornado. that's going to stretch from del rio, san angelo all the way up to abilene. lubbock is also included in that. a lot of rain is headed your way. we've already had a lot, and we could see an additional 2 to 4 inches of rain rkrain, isolateds up to 5 inches. so we're talking about a lot of rain around san angelo and also on the outskirts of midland. let's talk about good news, because the northeast, after the winter we've had, you deserve a good holiday weekend. temperatures are going to be in the 80s across most of the northeast. a lot of folks will be heading to the beaches. 88 in washington, d.c. that is mighty toasty. we're going to see temperatures starting out at 70 in new york. and as we go through the afternoon, temperatures

. >> jennifer gray tracking all of this and the threat this morning at the cnn weather center. jennifer? >> john and christine, severe weather has moved across the country for sunday and also saturday. today looks like we're going to see another round of possible severe weather. showers and storms setting up right around the country's heartland. we're going to look at 10:00 on monday, a little bit later today. then as that will progress to the east, we could see showers and storms firing up as we go through the afternoon. also, texas could see quite a bit of rain in the next day or two, so we'll be on the lookout for that as well. rainfall totals could be anywhere from 4 to 6 inches. right outside of dallas, we could see 4 to 6 inches on the north side of chicago, 1 to 3 outside of the city, and memphis could see quite a bit of rain as well. so, a lot of rain across the country, possible severe weather. you'll be in the severe weather threat if you are in, say chicago all the way down to portions of missouri and even southwest texas in that severe threat for today as well. look

let's check in with our meteorologist, jennifer gray. she's monitoring the situation from her post at the cnn severe weather center. jennifer, triple-digit heat, 100 degrees in some places in the l.a./san diego area today. very strong, dry santa ana winds. what's the outlook? >> yeah, we have had temperatures 20 and even 30 degrees above normal. it is still going to be hot today. but as you look forward to the next two or three days, temperatures do calm down. we'll still be running about 10 degrees above normal. but temperatures will come down into the 70s and low 80s. that will give those firefighters a little bit of relief. you're right, we've had those very strong offshore santa ana winds. 50 and 60 miles per hour in the foothills and the mountains during the past 24 hours. those will start to relax a little bit. we'll actually start to get more of an on-shore flow. and what that does, wolf, is it brings in a little bit more humidity. it brings in a little bit more moisture. and so that is going to help those firefighters as well. win

jennifer gray, appreciate that. >>> all right.rews have found the third victim of that deadly hot air balloon crash near richmond, virginia. two other bodies were recovered yesterday. it hit a live power line friday night. what more can you tell us about the finding, the location of this third victim? >> fred, this is a difficult search. more than 100 people involved. that is heavily wooded area, a third person found today this morning located about 100 yards from another body that was recovered yesterday. investigators have now found all three people who were in the basket of that hot air balloon. i spoke to the father of the pilot, the pilot was daniel kirk. his father said he was an experienced flyer, more than 30 years of flight experience. the two gone up together more than 50 times and he wants to know what happened here, what wept wrong. one of their last pictures posted on instagram, two friends smiling in the basket of a hot air balloon ready for what might have been a great adventure. another snapshot from their tethered

jennifer gray keeping an eye on all this weather for us this morning. jennifer? >> we're going to see the focus move more toward the mississippi river valley. we've had a lot of severe weather in the plains, now spotty showers and storms will move a little farther to the east. we'll even see scattered activity on the east coast. still a very high fire threat in the southwest, southern california. we are going to see high pressure stay in control in the pacific northwest. huge contrast in temperatures, though. 82 degrees in memphis, 87 in atlanta, 91 degrees in d.c. staying warm in los angeles, but it is only going to get warmer as we go forward in time. the fire threat will remain very high again tomorrow with very hot temperatures. we'll also see severe storms start to pick back up again right around the mississippi river valley, anywhere from mississippi, alabama, all the way up to kentucky with scattered showers across the eastern seaboard. look at the temperatures, though, tomorrow in l.a., as we go through tomorrow afternoon, 94 degrees. that fire threat wil

let's check in with our meteorologist jennifer gray. she's watching these conditions. er? >> well, luckily, wolf, we are getting the onshore flow. that should continue as we go into the weekend. we've been talking about those strong santa ana winds from east to west. the very dry, very hot winds. now we're starting to get more of an onshore flow. that will pull in more moisture, more humidity and that's going to be better news in fighting these fires. any winds in any direction is not a good thing. at least when you is those winds pulling in off of the coast, it will pull in more humidity and raise those -- more moisture and raise those humidity levels. also temperatures are going to be falling. we were running 20 and 30 degrees above normal. now we'll see temperatures slide into the low to mid 70s. some areas like san diego will slip into the upper 60s by monday. a little closer to where they should be, however, we will start to see those temperatures still above normal. i want to show you one thing. this is last year. state of california in the middle of may. 46% of t

cnn meteorologist jennifer gray is joining us now. jennifer, hello to you. so i guess a ltd.f tornado warnings are popping up out there. which area do you think we need to look out for tonight? >> yeah. we have seen tornado warnings pop up pretty much consistently over three hours or so and same areas of severe weather yesterday. that kansas, iowa, nebraska, areas right now. we have had the tornado warning continuously progress over the past couple of hours. this one in southern iowa, el don and ottumwa counties, rather. 26,000 people in the path of this one particular cell and we have velocity and how we tell the little tornadic signatures. look for the reds and greens, really close together and it is heading straight for ottumwa and be in the safe spot right now in that city. this is a very dangerous cell. we'll see very gusty winds. we have had a confirmed brief touchdown with one of the tornadoes that we have been watching or potential tornadoes in nebraska. that's where i'll take you now. this is also a very dangerous storm right around sutton. in that area, be careful a

jennifer gray, our meteorologist is "outfront." jennifer, when you look at this, these are some of the worst they have seen. is there any relief in sight, or is this something that is just going to continue to spiral out of control? >> yeah, these images are just awful. temperatures have been very, very hot. they were hot yesterday. hot today. we've been shattering records across the board. and we were in the 90s today. some areas in the triple-digits. 20 to 30 degrees above normal. good news is after today, temperatures should start to fall. they'll still be above normal by the weekend. but they will be a little bit cooler compared to how we have been. look at this. 102 high temperature in chula vista. record 81 degrees. so shattering a record by more than 20 degrees in parts of california. of course, we've been talking a lot about the santa ana winds, those very strong winds that are pulling offshore. we should get more of an onshore flow by the weekend that will help increase that humidity. that's what you want to help out these

our meteorologist jennifer gray is watching the situation from the cnn severe weather center in atlanta. what's the weather outlook today and that so-called fire nado, the formation of those fire nados, those have been very terrible. >> reporter: we've seen a lot of pictures of them, a lot of video. the fires are creating their own wind pattern on the surface, these little eddies, so you get that circular motion. we also have a lot of the brush and the debris that's all around these fires. that warm air rises. it creates this column. temperatures can reach hundreds of degrees and you have that spin going on. the fire is burning that vegetation. and it's releasing carbon in the air. it's combustible. it's searching for oxygen as it's rising. so that's what's creating the column and that spin. similar situation when you're dealing with these firenados, so they do look a lot like tornadoes. los angeles finally starting to see those temperatures come down in the coming days. we've been running 20 and 30 degrees above normal for the past several days. now we'll finally get back into the 70s.

cnn meteorologist jennifer gray is "outfront." jennifer, this is sort of an imperfect storm. >> yeah, it really is. and we're not even really to the peak of wildfire season yet. this is very, very early. and so you can only imagine as we get into june and july, very, very hot, dry months for california. this is only going to get worse. so this is a very, very bad situation in california. carlsbad right now 91 degrees. we did hit 100 today. humidity 8%. single digits. the dew point has been in the single digits. earlier today temperatures did go down a little bit with a shift in wind, which is good news. and that was what allowed those helicopters to get up in the air. but we still have wind gusts about 15 to 20 miles per hour inland locations, 20 to 30. and the foothills and the mountains today, we had wind gusts of 50 to 60 miles per hour. so it was very intense for a while. but now starting to slack off a little bit as we go forward tomorrow into friday, then we'll really start to see the winds die down, which is excellent news.

meteorologist, jennifer gray. >> what are we looking at? is it under control? >> it's only 5% contained. unfortunately, not good news as we run into the next couple days. right now, humidity is 67% but that is going to be going down that's not what you want when you are fighting these fires. that only means conditions are expected to become drier as we go through the weekend. this is around this evening around 29% humidity around 6:30 this evening and bumping up for the overnight hours. winds are going to pick up throughout the day. 13-mile-per-hour winds around 2:00 this afternoon as we go through the wee hours of the morning, 20-mile-per-hour winds, of course that's bad news as well. temperatures are going to be warming up. flagstaff could be 77 degrees by monday. that's almost a 20-degree increase in temperature over two days. look at phoenix, triple digits by monday, 103 guys. >> standard for phoenix. >> yeah. you know phoenix. jennifer, thank you so much. >>> if you happen to be slapping some burgers on the grill this holiday weekend -- >> save one for me.

our meteorologist jennifer gray is joining us from the cnn severe weather center. r? >> yeah, wolf, we've had strong santa ana winds and not good when you're talking about wildfires. we are going so see the winds start to shift and should get an on shore flow toward the weekend with more moisture and humidity. temperatures are also going to start to climb down just a little bit, or go down. los angeles, 98 today. 90 tomorrow. temperatures should be dropping almost 10 degrees. if you look at the averages, temperatures are running 20 to 30 degrees above normal. very, very hot. shattering records across southern california. relative humidity, 63% as we go through tomorrow, that should slowly start to increase. of course, it will go back and forth a little bit depending on day or night. we should relatively start to get that humidity up just a bit as we go into the weekend which is good news. still a very high fire danger, obviously, though. anywhere from l.a. all the way down to san diego and points east. we're going to see the very dry conditions remain. but at least

. >> jennifer gray, thank you. >> from that mining catastrophe to police clashes, how much can the peopleeally take? tear gas is being fired. they are demonstrated against the deadliest mining accident in history. the explosion and fire killed at least 284 people and one man who knows some victims was seen collapsed weeping at the boots of a riot police officer yelling why are you firing tear gas in soma. my friends' bodies haven't been found and you are firing tear gas? and it's not just tear gas. take a look. >> i mean, what is it that these people are doing on the streets that, you know, lends these measures being taken by riot police? >> it's just a remarkable response from the government here. >> we have seen heavy handed responses including what has happened in soma. protesting specifically against the mining companies saying safety was lax and that safeguards were not in place in order to insure that miners would be able to escape in case of a fire or catastrophic event such as the one that happened a few days ago. we saw tear gas and our own i van watson, we saw sporadic protests

let's bring in cnn meteorologist jennifer gray for more on the weather conditions when the accident happenednecessarily stormy, but winds could have played a factor here. >> yeah. we had storms approaching. that's key. right now, the winds were light, but all the information we are getting is out of richmond. we don't have information from where the actual site was, which is about 20 to 25 miles to the north. all we are looking at right now, richmond observations. if you look at the radar, showers were approaching. we had storms in the area. this is yesterday at 7:30. the storm is bubbling up to the north of richmond. a lot of times you can get a gust front. it's a strong gust of wind ahead of an approaching storm. so, while winds were sustained at seven to 12 miles per hour, you could have had a gust of anywhere from 25 to 30 miles per hour. so, when you look into that, it could have played a factor. of course, winds look like they died down around 8:00. right now, investigators aren't saying weather played a roll. we have to look into this once the press conference happens. >> just an hour

jennifer gray is here keeping track of the forecasts across the nation. how are things looking? >> things are looking pretty quiet. the only trouble spot is going to be in texas. that's going to be in wichita fa falls and lubbock, you're included in that. even the possibility of an isolated tornado. keep your eye on the sky if you're in texas. we're seeing rain in southwest texas through san antonio heading to the east. isolated amounts of five inches of rain in central texas. so a lot of it is coming down. luckily it should be clearing out in the next day or so. the place to be, the northeast, where you are 87 degrees today in new york city. it is going to be hot, but it is going to be sunny. i think after the winter that we have had, a lot of folks are excited about a good holiday forecast. los angeles also looking good. unfortunately still staying dry, but folks that do have plans outdoors, it's going to stay that way. 73 degrees the temperature perfect. >> looking pretty good with the exception of the hailstorms. after memorial day, you're not allowed to have hailstorms. we'
