jennifer griffin is live at the pentagon. nnifer, what prompted this strategy review to begin with? >> well, sources tell us that the white house is currently debating whether afghanistan is even in the u.s. national security interest at all and whether any u.s. troops should be fighting there. that is the debate currently going on. it is very different from the strategy that was announced by president obama back in march. what the white house is saying changed is the election on august 20th was for of more fraud and corruption than they had anticipated. that caused them to wonder whether they had a partner in afghanistan and the strategy is now currently being opened and reviewed as a result. trace: calling for general mcchrystal to answer questions on capitol hill. >> that's right. in fact, everyone from senator john mccain to house leader john boehner has called for mcchrystal to come and testify on capitol hill much the same as general petraeus did from iraq. tonight, however, the press secretary for defense secretary robe

the jennifer griffin is live from the pentagon.ting their long-range intercontinental missile system was much further behind than they originally thought and the threat from short and medium- range missiles was greater. that is why they decided to change. i spoke to a former bush administration secretary who was involved in negotiating missile defense, negotiating with poland and the czech republic, and he expressed serious skepticism that the intelligence has changed. he had access to the intelligence and iran was certainly making progress on these long-range missiles. so that is a contradiction that we will be asking about when we speak to officials this morning. essentially, a very big change and we are getting some reaction from poland and the czech republic. bill: polling done in those countries suggest that they do not want it, but political leaders have gone against the people, pushing for it. what have we heard? >> leaders in poland or taking a political chance. the pentagon press secretary says that this has nothing to do

jennifer griffin, what is the bottom line? >> general mcchrystal in this 66-page classified report -- basically, this was the assessment that everybody was waiting for from general mcchrystal about the way ahead in afghanistan. he talks about the need for more resources. resources means troops. he is asking for more troops. he says, a "failure to gain the initiative and reverse internet momentum in the near term, the next 12 months, risk an outcome where defeating the insurgency is no longer possible." he is warning that if the resources are not sent, there could be a possibility of failure. it is very clear from the sunday talk shows where president obama spoke to five the sunday talk shows is that president obama is putting the brakes on and buying some time as he reassesses the strategy. he announced a new strategy on march 27. he said they would pursue counterinsurgency. that is what general mcchrystal was out there to pursue. now, president obama says he wants to reassess the strategy. trace: as i was reading through the

jennifer griffin at the pentagon. we are tracking h1n1, and new word from the world pork -- world health organization today is that manufacturers will not produce as much vaccine for the virus as originally was thought. jonathan, why are drug makers producing less vaccine with flu season just getting under way? >> the original estimate, 4.9 billion doses worldwide, was based on a hypothetical. if 8 h1n1 -- if a 21 became so severe -- if h1n1 became very severe, they would possibly have to create that much. but h1n1 has not mutated and is not as deadly as thought. and now, rather than two doses to build immunity, adults may only require a single dose. manufacturers may continue to make seasonal flu vaccine. as far as supply here in the u.s., it will not affect us at all. the government is ordering 195 million doses of vaccine, all set to arrive before the end of the year. back to you, rick. rick: any other headlines from that press conference? >> mostly good news. the virus has not mutated, so they say that it is a goo

nuclear plant, where it is and what it is designed to do here is national security correspondent jennifer griffin. >> it is the third time that iran has been caught red-handed hiding aspects of its nuclear program according to u.s. officials. first in 2002, a dissident group revealed the existence of a previously unknown uranium enitch arement facility, and then a breach of iran's computer network revealed the country was working on weaponizing a warhead, abruptly stopping in 2003. now, a secret uranium enrichment facility, an underground tunnel complex outside the religious city of qom. the u.s. intelligence said it knew about the site for three years but only recently could confirm it had a capacity for 3,000 centrifuges. no centrifuges have been introduced to the facility, but the infrastructure for a small military infrastructure is ready. the same group that revealed the other facilities said it warned the iaea about the qom facility in december 200 a. >> the national council of resistance of iran revealed to the iaea and to the public that the revoluntionary guards are making tunnels near q

" we heard from the chairman of the joint chiefs saying at his reconfirmation saying that more troops would be needed, and it was clear that he thought that the strategies for afghanistans needed to be reviewed again. remember back on march 27, he actually announced his new strategy and said it would include counterinsurgency and that general mccrystal was being sent out there essentially to come up with a way to pursue counterinsurgency. now president obama is saying not so fast. don't send me a request for big resources because i want to make sure i have the strategy right first. bret: jennifer,

national security correspondent jennifer griffin has that story. >> a day after the obama administration and the pentagon announced a major shift in their european missile defense system to focus more immediately on the short and medium-range missile threats from iran, more details are emerging from a leaked secret report allegedly compiled by the iaea for its director. the report obtained by the associated press suggests that iran already has the knowhow to make a nuclear bomb and has worked extensively on developing a missile system to deliver it. developing a chamber inside a ballistic missile capable of housing a nuclear payload, and carrying out the probable testing of explosives, the kind used to detonate a nuclear warhead. the iaea has denied the report saying it has no concrete proof that there is or has been a nuclear weapon program in iran, but fox has learned from sources attending a conference this week in vienna that the secret report is, in fact, the same report that fran france's foreign minister demanded that be released to the iaea board of directors but was not released

national security correspondent jennifer griffin joins me now live from the pentagon with details. >> there is increasing evidence that iran is trying to play a spoiler role sim similar to what it played in iraq and afghanistan and supplying weapons used to attack nato and u.s. troops there. fox news has learned that on august 29, nato and afghan forces found a large weapons cache in iran. it included, according to a senior u.s. defense official, a small number of irrainian made efp's, explosively formed penetrators, the powerful roadside bombs that were so deadly for u.s. forces in iraq. also seized during the raid, 107 iranian-made bm1 rockets like these and dozens of blocks of irannian c-4 plastic explosives. there are yeses about when these weapons -- there are yeses about when these entered afghanistan. an iranian rocket was recently fired and there is more intelligence recently showing iranians have been providing support directly to the taliban. other coalition countries allege the iranian influence is even deeper, and that iranian intelligence is funneling money to afghan pres

jennifer griffin's terrific scoop on these weapons found in iran but the real question is why we haven't heard more about it. there has been effort of iran influencing afghanistan immediately after 9/11. bret: is it possible that the station knows about all of this but doesn't know how to play this card in these current negotiations ongoing with the nuclear situation? in other words, they know that iran is acting up inside afghanistan, but don't know whether they should call them on it aggressively? >> yes, i think that's not only possible but i think it's likely. to be fair to the obama administration, the bush administration handled it the same way -- i should say mishandled it the same way because they were so intent on starting these discussions. the obama administration has most obviously in their poor response to the uprising in iran after the elections has shown itself totally incapable of actually confronting iran when it was doing really really bad things and saying, in effect, we are willing to do anything and let you do anything so that we can engage you in diplomacy and engag

jennifer griffin is at the pentagon tonight. what specifically about this raid are the afghan reporters upset about? >> well, what they are angry about is that the afghan translater who worked for the "new york times" as well, that he was killed and his body was left behind. so clearly the commandos were focusing more on steve ferrell, the "new york times" reporter who is also british on his life than on saving munadi, according to them. they were upset that the commando raid occurred. the commandos didn't tell the "new york times" they were going to do this. and at that time his family was trying to negotiate with the taliban their release. shepard: do we know why the british commandos decided to strike when they did? >> well, i have talked to those who have talked to the ones who had the intelligence and actually monitoring the mobile phone calls of the journalists who were being held by the taliban. they were watching for four days. and at one point, it seemed as though they were going to move these two hostage to pakistan an

jon: jennifer griffin is live for us at the pentagon. jennifer, what does the defense secretary said? >> what is interesting is that robert gates was the one superposed this ground-based missile system to president bush in 2006. he is the one who came out just a minute to go -- just a minute ago and says that anybody who thinks they are scrapping missile defense for europe does not understand what is going on. he says this new system will be fielded six or seven years earlier. here is what he said. >> those that say we're scrapping missile defense in europe are either misinformed or misrepresenting reality of what we're doing. i believe that this new approach provides a better capability for our forces in europe, for our european allies, and eventually for the homeland. i recommended it almost three years ago. >> what is interesting is that there was a change in intelligence lately, suggesting that long-range intercontinental ballistic missiles from iran are not developing as rapidly as they thought they would three years ago. if you look
