eyewitness news report dolan with the latest. >> a heartbreaking story here in jersey city. a mother and her 5-year-old son found dead in a second floor apartment. the police and prosecutor's office are not saying if they know what the deaths suspicious. police got a 911 call around 6:00 this evening. the caller saying the mother and son were unconscious in the apartment. that second floor apartment, medics rushed to the hospital where both were pronounced dead this evening. there were no obvious signs of trauma and tests show no carbon monoxide in the apartment so it's not clear what happened and neighbors certainly had no idea what was going on. >> it's sad because that's my neighbor and it was very sad to know that's what happened. >> you don't know anybody who lives in that building? >> no, i don't. >> seen the child running around? >> no. >> most neighbors did not know who the mother or the child were. they did not know anybody who lived in that building and police won't say who it was who called 911 or what that person's relationship to the mother and child were. again

dari: jersey city will be the first city to allow short term rentals like airbnb. steve: sharon crowley shows us how officials plan to keep short term renters from wearing out their welcome. >> i'm a big fan of airbnb. >> reporter: anna is thrilled short term housing options like offered in jersey city. >> you get more of the local culture, you want to understand the things going on. it's better in that sense. >> reporter: the mayor is introducing legislation that will legalize and regulate the short term rentals. airbnb users will be charged a 6 percent hospitality tax, which is what jersey city hotel guests pay. the leases would not last longer than 30 days. >> the city will ultimately realize a million more in service charges from the hotel. we'll be able to be more precise on enforcement of the bad actors. it will protect neighborhoods because there'll be a million dollars of insurance for each unit provided by airbnb. we think this is a win across the board. >> reporter: such housing services are not legal in new york state and some in the hotel industry are c

the news of their deaths quickly spreading in jersey city and neighbors there are stunned. >> jose santos alvarez strangled and suffocated his ex-girlfriend and her son inside their home. brian thompson has more information on the suspect. brian? >> reporter: this has been a tough one for law enforcement, the hudson county prosecutor, because it took them a couple days even to recognize that the mom and her child had been killed, ask nd then it took them some more time to figure out who the likely suspect would be. that search does come with a warning, that warning that the suspect is considered dangerous. the victims are 27-year-old monica petesneoch and her four-year-old son christopher. last wednesday their bodies were found in a second floor apartment on lincoln street. the mother died of strangulation, the son had been suffocated. it took two days to determine how they died, and the alert for jose ronald sanchez went out last night in this neighborhood. >> you need respect and love in a home, and communication. >> i feel unsafe because i feel he's going to come back. >> reporter: it
