jessica here we are two weeks away from the deadline, still no deal. where do things stand right now? >> reporter: after five days of negotiations and almost eight hours of discussions, practically speaking they are no further along than they were when this thing started last sunday. as you say, the president has said he wants this big deal but this thing broke up today, the meeting ended with the president telling these leader toss go back to their members and ask them what do they think can pass and then report back to the president with something that they believe can pass by this saturday morning. they're not even having a meeting tomorrow. now, despite all that i am told by my sources that there's not a lot of optimism that this particular negotiating process here at the white house is going to actually end up leading to the real deal, and a lot of effort and attention is now turning to a different process that's happening in the u.s. senate and another alternate deal that's being worked out between the two senate leaders that could instead end up

i'm jessica yellin, john king is off. we've got breaki ining news on eve of the milestone in our country's future. the house of representatives is supposed to vote tomorrow on speaker john boehner's short-term plan to raise the debt limit and cut about a trillion dollars in spending. but just a few minutes ago the speaker announced he plans to rewrite the bill because it does not cut enough spending. cnn congressional correspondent kate bolduan joins us now from capitol hill, what is the latest? >> reporter: you know the cbo numbers, the congressional budget office, jessica, this office that scores, gives a cost estimate, for legislation, it's very critical, and this evening it came out the cbo brought out -- gave out its estimate, and it says that the speaker boehner's bill falls short of what its target was. it says that it would only reduce the deficit by $850 billion, rather than the more than a trillion dollars than the legislation said it was going to -- said it was going to. here's why it's such a big problem. beca

jessica, thanks. i know you've been very busy on this. >>> went other late note, the "new york times" now reporting some flexibility on that august 2nd deadline that we've been paying attention. to that deadline was always sort of a treasury department estimate on when they'd run out of cash. now incoming taxes could allow that date to slip perhaps as late as august 10th. a little more breathing room perhaps but still a lot to talk about. let's talk with political analyst david gergen and gloria borger who have also been very busy. gloria i've been watching you all day on this. we know now over the last couple of hours that speaker boehner's office's team is rewriting this bill after the c.b.o. score that came. in they were supposed to be voting on this bill tomorrow. now it's thursday at the earliest we're hearing. that's another day. >> yeah. >> which it seems no one can afford, right? >> no. nobody can afford it. it's a big problem for the house speaker. the house speaker, he wasn't sure he had the

jessica yellin. is this meeting still going on?reporter: last i check, moments ago, don, it was still ongoing among the president. senate leader harry reid and nancy pelosi, and the goal, both to update the president on the discussions they have had with republican leaders, and i'm also told by some democrats to brief the president on their alternate plan to move forward. the mood here, i'm told is concern. concern, frustration with the house, for not crafting a plan of its own to solve this problem in the coming days. and also some shifting attention as kate mentioned to the senate. as we've seen in these kind of situations before, there's often the house can't get it done, the grown-ups on the other side of the building will, and in this particular situation, with the democrat in control of the white house, there's also some faith that the democrat in control of the senate could maybe do something for the white house in this instance, but the time is running short, and so much deadlock in the last few weeks. what options remain a

and as jessica said, he's frustrated.ut ultimately this is congress's job to try to get something passed. >> and jessica, tomorrow morning what happens? do we know? at the white house. >> well, tomorrow morning first of all they're watching the markets. who knows how the markets are going to react to this? part of what the downgrade potential is about is the inability for washington to function. so the markets could go haywire simply over this. so there's some anxiety about that. i wouldn't be surprised if we do see the president come out and make some kind of statement. they're not advising that. but i wouldn't be surprised. and we could see the president call people back to the white house for another meeting and try to knock heads or try to forge a compromise. who knows what the path forward will be? the big question is, will the u.s. senate try to break off and go on its own? until now harry reid the democratic leader has waited for speaker boehner to sort of get his vote over with and then he can proceed on his own.

you heard jessica's report. do you think that's going to happen? is there anything that can be done to convince him? >> well, look. i think there are people on both sides who are not going to support this deal no matter what. i mean, nancy pelosi has said famously as well as some other house democrats that they will never accept entitlement reforms. so i think there are going to be folks on both sides. the question is, can you get enough votes? and i think jon is absolutely right. it's critically important that we raise the debt ceiling. i think, however, the president of the united states is not a freshman house republican. >> right. >> and as i said, this deal has been on the table for a long time. this problem has been on the table for a long time. i think we need the president of the united states, the leader of the free world, to step forward and lead here. and i think there will be enough bipartisan support to get a deal done. >> has he not been leading on this? i mean, with regards to his most recent conv

joining us jessica yellin and jeffrey toobin.t was talking about a meeting at the white house i think on sunday that she said was harry reid and nancy pelosi who came up with a plan and the president passed on it. is that true? >> reporter: well, the president was willing to make some -- the president was willing to move forward on certain plans. but there was a lot of -- they needed agreement with the republicans in order to go forward. and the fundamental breakdown was that they didn't have that agreement. there's a lot of backward looking we could do at this point, anderson. but the bottom line is, right now at the white house there's enormous frustration. because what they're looking at is the clock ticking and the fact that speaker boehner has a bill that in their view couldn't get any democratic votes, couldn't get through the senate. and he couldn't get republicans at this point to even sign onto the bill. so why are they in their view wasting all this time still on a bill that was just going to get republican support? the

. >> good evening, i'm jessica aguirre. shannon stone was many things, a firefighter, loving son, union negotiator. but everyone who knew him agrees that above all else, he was a great dad. he died last night after catching a ball tossed by his favorite player, josh hamilton. his 6-year-old son watching as he tumbled head first. tonight, both the rangers and the a's paused for a heartbreaking moment of silence. the 39-year-old firefighter and his son, cooper, drove more than two hours to see last night's game. even stopping along the way to buy a new glove hoping to catch that foul ball. the perfect father and son outing that turned into a life-changing tragedy for both. >> it's just hard for me to, you know, hearing that little boy screaming for his daddy after he had fallen, and then being home with my kids. >> josh hamilton could barely hold back tears remembering last night's game. >> it's surreal. it brings things into perspective how quickly lives can change. >> hamilton doesn't often throw balls to fans, but it seeme

i'm jessica aguirre. >> and i'm raj mathai. thanks for joining us.gin with a developing story. a plane crash near one of the most notable water front restaurants. witnesses were shocked and so was the pilot as his plane plunged into the water. the pilot and one other passenger attended the jazz festival. but they never left. he botched the departure. you can see by the video hear. the sea plane lost control and sank. thankfully both passengers escaped and were unharmed. there were dozens of witnesses who saw or heard the crash. >> i've lived here 28 years and never seen anything like this before. the plane was upright. the plane did sink about 10, 15 minutes later completely, but the two occupants made it out. >> the u.s. coast guard is now investigating whether the downed aircraft polluted the bay as a result of the botched takeoff. >>> swept to their deaths in one of our state's most beautiful national parking. two california hikers died at yosemite earlier this week. hikers are warning all weekend warriors to be wary. cheryl hurd joins us live wit

you're absolutely right, jessica. the investigation continues into this evening and it will for a couple more weeks. and we did hear from family members. the houghton family of four was on their way for vacation but shortly after takeoff their small plane crashed. as we now know, there were no survivors. >> everybody in the family is really devastated. >> reporter: that from a relative of the houghton family of santa cruz. dorothy, known as dd, david and their two children, like and ryan, ages 12 and 10. all four loved being outdoors and were on their way to such a vacation when their plane crashed moments after leaving watsonville's airport. the small plane hit the ground outside of the watsonville community hospital. then crashed into the building. >> in this case, we have four ground striations which are indicative that the propeller had cut through the tarmac. >> reporter: relatives we spoke to describe the houghton family as fun loving and adventurous. david who would have turned 45 years old on monday had earned
