kpix 5's jessica flores is live in oakland to tell us what they have planned for today. jessica. >> reporter: well, kenny, today advocates are using mother's day to highlight why they believe california needs bail reform. now, there will be a huge rally here in front of the alameda county courthouse behind me. basically these groups want to reunite as many incarcerated women with their families and they are calling today national mama's bailout day campaign. more than a dozen local and national groups will post bail for as many black women as possible who would otherwise spend mother's day in jail because they are can't afford bail. the campaign is supporting california's bail reform act. if passed the legislation would eliminate the bail requirement for nonviolent offenders. supporters of the bill say thousands of people remain in jail because they can't afford to post bail. according to state data, 63% of those in county jails have not been convicted of a crime but they are in jail awaiting trial. one of the groups advocating for criminal justice reform, they put out a

kpix5's jessica flores is live outside the wave with the latest. ssica. >> reporter: kenny, the wave water park here in dublin just opened. it was the grand opening on saturday. a lot of folks were trying to ride all the slides here and one of them was a 10-year-old little boy. he climbed that slide behind me, went down and then when he reached the bottom, the landing area, that's when he fell off. now, that slide is called the emerald plunge. he fell off at the edge of the slide. the ground was 2 feet below. the boy was able to walk away with scrapes and his parents had to take him to the hospital to get checked out. the city of dublin owns and operates the park and after the accident they closed the emerald plunge, they also closed another slide citing safety. the city says the emerald plunge slide can be found around the world. >> and until we can, you know, resolve what occurred, the slides will remain closed. >> reporter: today the manufacturer of the slide will be here trying to determine what went wrong. osha is also investigating and osha pe

kpix 5's jessica flores is live in walnut creek with the details.essica. >> reporter: could this be arson? we are at the scene of a car fire at walnut creek. you can see how bad it got. it's totally destroyed and that fire erupting just feet from the occupied home here. firefighters work to put out the flames and quickly called arson investigators to the scene. they took pictures of the vehicle. another one then started a mile away in lafayette. the second fire started in a white suv. both fires started around midnight. both ripped through the cars parked in the driveways. no injuries. now the question is are these two fires a coincidence? or are they the work of arsonists ? it's not just walnut creek and lafayette. several car fires have started in recent weeks. another car burned monday in martinez. the fire protection district says they frequently work on car fires but they are taking it seriously. they have arson looking into this. trying to see what happened to cause the fire and they are looking into the other fire in this early morning in laf

kpix 5's jessica flores joins us live in lafayette at the scene of the latest fire with more. ssica. >> reporter: kenny, this is a frightening situation cars up in flames overnight and right now investigators don't know who is starting these fires. now, let me show you one of the latest fires behind me. this year is in lafayette. this vehicle a toyota, i have been reporting on this for three days doesn't seem to be a pattern in terms of what type of vehicles they are targeting. there's been a honda, a luxury vehicle so all types of vehicles here. we did talk to the owner of this vehicle. he says they heard a loud bang around 2:30 a.m. rushed out and they tried to put the fire out, with a hose, that didn't work. fire crews came and were able to put it out. nobody got hurt. but at the same time, just a few miles away in walnut creek, another fire. crews rushed to put that one out. so there have been a total of 7 car fires this weekend. all sparked during the overnight hours around 2:30 a.m. to 3:30 a.m. all cars parked in front of the home they are either in the driveway or just

live in lafayette, i'm jessica flores, kpix 5. >>> 6:13. get another check on traffic and weather. we are going to start with the roads. what's going on there? we are actually going to start with the mass transit. >> for just a moment, we are dealing with some closure, oakland airport connector is closed out of service so if you transit bus number 73 that's what you'll need to use if you are making your way between oakland coliseum station and to the oakland airport. the rest of your mass transit running on time. we have 50 bart trains in service right now. but this weekend there is a track closure along bart and that is going to slow things down. this is all happening between fruitvale and lake merritt stations. the closure will be in effect saturday and sunday. and you can expect up to 40- minute delays. so bart advises you to plan accordingly. they will have a bus bridge in place for folks who need to make their way between the two stations. we'll take it over to our san jose map and you can see traffic definitely starting to get a littl

kpix 5's jessica flores is live in oakland with more on that campaign. jessica. >> reporter: michelle, advocates are using mother's day as a way to highlight why they believe california badly needs bail reform. today here at the alameda county courthouse, advocates llgath for a rally and they say their whole goal is to reunite as many women in jail with their children as possible p again, you mentioned they are calling it national mama's bailout day campaign. more than a dozen local and national groups will post bail for as many black women as possible who would otherwise spend mother's day in jail because they are unable to afford bail. the campaign is supporting california's bail reform act. if passed the legislation would eliminate the requirement for nonviolent offenders to post bail. supporters of the bill say thousands of people remain in jail because they can't afford to post their bail. according to state data, 63% of those end every in county jails have not been convicted of a crime and are being held awaiting trial. >> money bail is a problem be

kpix 5 reporter jessica flores is live at orange memorial park with the latest. reporter: michelle, it's been a long night for these parents. they slept overnight in tents hoping to snag a spot for their kids in after-school programs. now, i want you to take a look behind me. they have now packed up their tents. they are standing in line. dozens of parents. and the doors open here in about half-hour at 7 a.m. so they can register their kids, hopefully register their kids, or get on a waiting list for the before and after-school programs. some of these parents have been lined up since yesterday early- morning hours around 3:30 a.m. that's when the line started. the city parks and recreation department is offering the programs to city students, kindergarten through fifth grade. they have about 600 total spots but only 40 openings total. some schools only have about 10 spots open. >> what are we going to do with our kids after school? you know? we have to work until 6:00 or whatever. and you have to have child care. you know? so we can work. and so with only ten spot

kpix 5's jessica flores has the details. >> reporter: currently at uc- berkeley's recreational sports facility, there's a menendez locker room and a women's locker room. but a 4500-square-foot addition will also make a place for gender nonconforming individuals or disabled students who have assistance from someone of a different gender. >> so it will be gender inclusive. it's the idea that it's open to all. anyone who has an interest in, um, additional level of privacy, you know, it's available to anyone and everyone who wants to. >> reporter: the planned $2.7 million locker room is funded by a $54 student fee. the locker room will include partitioned showers and private changing rooms. >> we worked heavily with campus and students across campus really making sure that this was an initiative they were interested in and passionate about and we see nothing but the same. >> reporter: a big problem for gender nonconforming individuals, students can only access the swimming pool by going through either the men's or women's locker rooms. >> we want to use this as a means to help eliminate s

kpix 5's jessica flores on what happened and how passengers had to deal with it. >> reporter: thousands spent the morning waiting at least an hour to board bart into san francisco including this rider in west oakland. >> it's made me about two hours late for work. >> reporter: just before 7 a.m., the train headed towards richmond broke down right at the entrance of the transbay tube where one track crosses over to the other. >> broke down in the worst possible position, which was an interlocking that we rebuilt last year and so the interlocking itself was in great shape. unfortunately, the train was not in great shape. >> reporter: the train blocked all the transbay train traffic into san francisco. after about 30 minutes, crews pushed the train out of the way. but bart spent a couple of hours working to get trains to catch up to schedule. >> yeah, i had a friend who called in today because it's too much. it's been too much of a delay to get in. >> reporter: bart officials say the $3.5 billion bond measure passed in the fall will eventually help fix the problems triggering delays. but f

kpix 5's jessica flores is live in walnut creek with the latest on the investigation. jessica. >>> pretty scary situation overnight. two car fires popping up just minutes apart back-to-back. now take a look in walnut creek. the fire engulfing that car just feet away from the home here. firefighters worked to put out the flames and quickly called arson investigators to the scene. as they worked on this fire another one popped up a mile away in lafayette. the second fire started on pondre street engulfing a white suv both starting at midnight hitting cars parked in driveways. no injuries. now the big question, are they related? it's not just walnut creek and lafayette. several car fires have popped up in recent weeks. another car burned monday in martinez. we did speak to contra costa county fire protection district now they tell us that they frequently do work on car fires. because of the two fires happening overnight, they are investigating this as an arson. they are not sure if it is an arson but, of course, they are taking this very seriously. >>> a man accused of fir

. >> kpix 5's jessica flores is live in oakland with the details. jessica. >> reporter: michelle, kenny, we know that sexual assault and harassment have been in the spotlight but oakland unified hasn't done much to change its policies and now a group of teenaged girls says they want the schools to revamp their sexual harassment and sexual assault policies. they want the district to focus on the victim providing support to the victim. they also want the victim to crack down on a culture of sexual harassment at schools. now, this group of teenagers worked with a nonprofit here in oakland called, and students can't get in trouble for false reporting and the district has to provide support to the victims through the processing. the proposal stems from a report that the alliance for girls, the organization surveyed girls of color and found they were more chronically absent than boys. one of the big reasons, the girls wanted to avoid being sexual harassment by boys. middle school girls described tradition at schools where every friday boys would try to sla

kpix5's jessica flores is live in oakland on the ban they are introducing this afternoon. jessica. >> reporter: the oakland city council will consider banning all flavored tobacco products. now, the big motive here is to keep kids away from trying these products. they say these candy flavored products actually entice children and young people to want to try tobacco. now, federally there is already a ban on candy and fruit flavored cigarettes but when it comes to cigars, tobacco and vape oil, there's no federal regulation. san francisco is also considering a flavored tobacco products ban, that would also ban mental cigarettes. menthol cigarettes, leaders from both cities say big tobacco uses these products to basically advertise to these young people so they will eventually try cigarettes but shop owners say a possible ban could have its own negative consequences. >> we have tax increase, now they are trying to ban flavors. if you take the flavors out, there is no incentive to keep vaping and it would basically condemn people back to smoking. >> reporter: oakland wouldn't be
