and one thing that jim clyburn knows is he knows his constituents. he knows black voters. and part of what he is picking up on is not necessarily an emphasis on black people leaving the democratic party or black voters moving over to the republican camp, although that's certainly a possibility. it's more so about the apathy towards the american political presidential election. black people are feeling pain. they are feeling something -- they're not feeling, essentially, any of the wins the biden campaign has been talking about over the last several years. they're not seeing it. they're not feeling it in their day-to-day lives. so, he is trying to push, i think, the campaign back on track. and i would even go a step further. part of what clyburn is picking up on, he says, i have no problem with the biden administration's policies. but part of what he is trying to gently nudge the campaign towards is acknowledging that the warmth that traditionally has defined the relationship between african americans and the democratic party has been fading in the last couple of years. so,

jim clyburn says biden's not breaking through the maga wall yet. how much does the campaign intend to continue? >> it biden campaign will continue and then some. they will continue to step up. look, it is important to remember, and john berman, i don't need to tell you this, we are still -- in fact, we haven't officially started the republican nominating process yet. when donald trump says outrageous things like calling the people who were in jail because they attacked the united states capitol and even democracy itself, calling them hostages when we know, unfortunately, as we speak, there are real hostages being held, americans even, in places like gaza. it's -- you know, it's mind blowing. but for the people he's appealing to in the short term, it's not a problem necessarily for him. when you talk about if he does get the nomination, the general election, that is an area where the biden campaign thinks that talking about democracy, talking about these issues is baiting donald trump into playing on joe biden's turf. that's a term that one of biden

i love jim clyburn, respect him immensely. but this is far more than a campaign of misinformation or disinformation. let's just call it again what it is. black folk did not just save joe biden's campaign in a very real way. black folks saved this democracy. on more than one occasion, we have been called upon as black people to save this democracy from itself. we've done it in every war, in the civil war, in world war i, world war ii, black soldiers having to sit on the back of the train behind nazi war criminals coming out. and yet we put ourselves, our lives on the line to save this democracy. so black women in particular in south carolina, again, didn't just save this campaign, they stepped up to save this democracy. here is the question with all respect to congressman clyburn, who i love dearly. what is the return on investment? we continue to be called upon time and time again to save the democracy. but we are -- don't end up being the victor, as it were, to get the spoils. and so when you don't have meaningful voter refor

[applause] >> and my buddy jim clyburn, you brought me back. >> that was candidate joe biden the nightth carolina primary, thanking black voters and democratic congressman jim clyburn forgiving his struggling campaign a decisive win. joe biden went on to win 87% of the black vote in that 2020 general election, and he is hoping that four years later, history will repeat itself. this weekend, congressman clyburn joined president biden on the stump, asked president tries to shore up support from voters of color. nbc news polling in 2023 found that while black voters nationwide prefer biden over trump, 73% to 17%, support for president biden shrank to 60% among black voters under the age of 34. support for donald trump among the same group rose to 28%. joining me now is jaime harrison, chair of the dnc. mister chairman, thank you for being here. the last time i saw you was at the barbershop, nice to see you have a fresh trim.
