and former atf special agent in charge, jim kavanaugh. enjoys been out by phone. jim, talk to us about how law enforcement in california has been handling the way they inspect that van in torrents. >> well, the first thing is that when you get a band like that blocked in with the suspected mass killer. or maybe a powerful -- you have to worry about explosives. so squat has to handle that very very delicately. normal procedure, they busted windows out. the use of baton around. it is a piece of wood shot out of a shotgun or the used big amount of bank sticks. it's a flash band-aid of a sick. but to use some beanbag rounds. they busted windows out and they speed little thing up manually but normally don't put anyone off to do that. so they busted windows, out they head out there, there are flash bang, in some gas. but this is a time when someone might, you know, commit suicide because what you don't understand about these homicidal hacks where we see in america are like we see today. as suicide often is the precursor. we talk so much about mental health but often the

i want to bring back jim kavanaugh and joyce vance who's worked on federal investigations and grew up in monterey park neighborhood where this shooting took place. jim, you identified the weapon. the sheriff made the same identification. the sheriff identifying three more victims by name, having completed the next of kin process, and we got some news out of this press conference dealing with of course the grim shooting, that they've executed a search warrant where they've uncovered other guns and ammunition. 42 cases found on the scene, jim, you can talk us through that, as well as information about the shooter's criminal history, and of course remarks from the sheriff and the local supervisor about brandon sy. jim, your reaction to any of the information we learned in the briefing? >> my biggest reaction is the sheriff said they basically found a silencer factory at the guy's house. this guy charged for unlawful carrying a gun in 1990. he's making silencers. you can see in the picture what i talked about earlier. said looked like a silencer to me, and now he's making silencers. and w

joining me now on the phone, msnbc terrorism contributor, jim kavanaugh. harge, former hostage negotiator for atf. jim, thank you very much for your time tonight. from a law enforcement perspective what's your assessment of the situation unfolding with this white van thus far. we're seeing, it's one door open on your screen. and there's a woman currently taking photos. what's your assessment of the situation? >> good afternoon, symone, it's possible suicide, the suspect could be dead inside the van. it depends though how they came, was the van driving when they stopped it, we don't have those details [inaudible] just stopped, they had to put the swat procedure on it. they're worried about two things, one -- if there's a bomb in the van, secondly, is he in there with a rifle and his firearm. so, that's why they use the two armored vehicle those are called bare cats. they put one in the front and one of the. that's the van is [inaudible] , sometimes, you have a killer like that he knows he strapped. the event is not only a homicide but a suicide, sometimes so

. >>> and joining me now, jim kavanaugh, former atf special agent in charge and former attorney, special fbi agent, head of the fbi's active shooter program, the author of stop the killing, how to end the mass shooting crisis. catherine, the focus now, shifting to motive. it's rare that the alleged gunman of this kind, mass shooting, he's in his 70s. of that community. what does this tell you? >> it's not uncommon for a 14509er to shoot in his community. we had an 85-year-old shooter at a holocaust museum. that's one of the oldest i dealt with. we hardly ever have a shooter up in this age range. to me, that points towards personal. it's a personal issue. so maybe that is the situation here. i know we don't know the motive yet, but i see that the age is kind of indicating that maybe there's this historical you know, relationship issue with the community and the people in the community. >> jim, the officers who briefed on sunday said that the gunman was carrying a semiautomatic assault pistol. not the long gun rather. ar-15 style gun, but in any case, a really dangerous weapon and illegal
