let me start with you on this question of just how precious jim mattis is to the trump administration the country. >> i think secretary mattis holds a great degree of moral authority. obviously, a career of service to the country, to the military. great credibility abroad. so you see that in all of his trips and everything he's doing. he also speaks with independence. what you've seen in his interactions within the administration and publicly is an independent voice. i think that's what's being reflected. nicolle, one thing to be careful about, though is the caricatures created around all of these administration officials. i think we like to categorize them, put them in teams. and it's often more complicated than that. and i think the criticisms of the administration take various forms. both policy related, as well as tone and politically related. and so we just have to be careful about sort of these grand categorical statements about the last man standing. no doubt the secretary holds great moral authority. pompeo last week went out and parted ways with the intelligence community and
