we were talk about that with jim sciutto. are people just going to see what they want in that comment? some might think it is a reference to her health. others her frame of mind. >> i think on that particular one, the at right movement, the bright barts, the drudges of the world will see it as they want but i don't think it will have much traction as jim says. what's so fascinating about the e-mails is they show us who hillary clinton is in a kind of nuanced way. they are an accurate picture of her. both good and bad. the e-mails released about the speeches for goldman sachs show her how she likes policy. how she wants to have things both ways. there are a lot of nuance in these attentithings. it is a pretty good picture of her and at the same time it is not a flattering picture. and if donald trump is going win, perhaps the combination of what's in the e-mails in some ways the unflattering stuff along with the excitement generated by new poll numbers and other events then he might have a slight way to win. but is an advantag

as we saw in jim sciutto's reporting there was war been the clinton inner circle. is this infighting common or different? >> i think that there's some elements of this that are different. what's interesting about the emails as they emerged chelsea clinton apparently got involved in the clinton foundation, was unhappy with the way the clinton foundation was being run and some of what we've seen in the last few days seems to be a response from doug band around bill clinton and the clinton foundation in defending his role and his contribution. some of it seemed odd to me. for example him boasting that he got speaking engagements for president clinton. i don't know any president of the you state has a problem getting speaking engamements for fairly eye-popping amounts of money and bill clinton is not any mean speaker. he's someone who is in demand, so it seems like the rooster taking credit for the sun coming up. >> there's been this drift or drip of the wikileaks email hack. do you think it's doing damage to secretary clinton, do you think the emails in the final week

jim sciutto has details. ring forgiving these loans or this disbursement altogether? >> reporter: clearly trying to draw a line under this. first line secretary carter's statement gets to it. there's no more important responsibility for the department of defense than keeping faith with our people. clearly, he sees here that this is a problem. you gave these bonuses out and now these veteran, many of whom are facing financial challenges forced to pay back tens of thousands of dollars years later. he does say in this statement that some of these service men and women should have known they weren't eligible for these bonuses. it's possible leaving the window open there that some of them do have to pay it back, but when pressed about this after giving that statement, was asked if he might permanently suspend these payments. he says he has to work within the law but left that possibility open. i don't think anybody, including him, wants to be in a position of clawing back bonuses already paid to these families. >>

so let's first go to jim sciutto, our chief national security correspondent, on this.ontext. can you give me the context of the e-mail? we know fallon is a former doj employee. he was citing public information about a case involving a foia -- freedom of information request. was this out of bounds? >> listen, just throw the e-mail up on the screen again. first of all, as you say, the fact that a status hearing is coming up would be public information. second of all, to get a window into the judge's thinking. that's not because they're going out for drinks with the judge, it's because there's a status hearing when the lawyers present would, based on the judge's questions, get a window into his thinking. so there's not a lot of "there" there. if the implication was here you have clinton lawyers and the doj colluding on how they'll do the investigation and decide guilt or innocence, that's not there. >> what about any sort of allegations, russian ties, i know foreign minister sergei lavrov talked to chris christiane amanpour. what are they telling her? >> you have russian
