the story of joan is fascinating. she was a village girl born in the early 1400s, a warrior in her teens and was accused of heresy and witchcraft because she would not deny her visions and voices and consequently was convicted and burned at the stake. almost 500 years later, joan was canonized by the church. shakespeare, bertolt brecht, maxwell anderson and jean anouilh all have dramatized the joan story, each reflecting a personal point of view and interest. to meet the challenge of that role required a special actress. our guest is that special actress who met the challenge, made theater history with her interpretation of joan in jean anouilh's the lark and remains an outstanding interpreter of the heroic maid of orleans, julie harris. george bernard shaw's saint joan is a glorious play and it's one that i read when i was in high school and dearly wanted to be part of. i never have acted in the play professionally, but my high school-- my senior year in high school, i was able to play just the trial scene, which was

joining united states on our news line from boston columnist from the boston globe, joan vennochi.good to talk to you this morning. >> thank you for having me on. >> first of all, tell us what the results were last night and was it close? >> well, it was pretty much as expected on the democratic side. congressman ed newarkey beat the more conservative guy and i think that everyone pretty much expected that. on the republican side a new comer named gay bre yell go gaybrel gomez who parachuted into the republican primary basically unknown beat two other guys. we are framing it as i guess the fresh face versus the old face. >> tell us about him never ran for office before. how did he pull this off? >> he is not well known. i think at this point, people basically know three things about him. he was a navy seal. he has a latino heritage and what came out during campaign is that he wrote a letter to deval patrick asking patrick to appoint him, a republican as the interim senator before the special election the and in that letter which his opponents tried to use against him, he said he wo

joining me now, joan walsh editor at large for salon.com.hor of the book "what's the matter with white people." she is coming to us from new york. thanks for coming into "the war room"." >> thanks for having me. >> michael: it's a pleasure to have you on the show, and there is so much to talk about. but as we near the end of this fabulous week how would you rate the white house's performance in the way they've dealt with all of these scandals this week's? >> you know, michael there is a part of me that resists rating their performance. there is only one scandal in my mind, and that is the questions around what the department of justice are doing with the ap records. the other two are faux scandals. they're made up,, and con confectionary can exactlies acting as if president obama is culpable and if he acted tougher, earlier or got the e-mails out sooner he could have some how for stalled this. i'm sure there are things along the way that he could have done, and we can talk about some of them, but really this is what republicans do. they're a
