the story of joan is fascinating. she was a village girl born in the early 1400s, a warrior in her teens and was accused of heresy and witchcraft because she would not deny her visions and voices and consequently was convicted and burned at the stake. almost 500 years later, joan was canonized by the church. shakespeare, bertolt brecht, maxwell anderson and jean anouilh all have dramatized the joan story, each reflecting a personal point of view and interest. to meet the challenge of that role required a special actress. our guest is that special actress who met the challenge, made theater history with her interpretation of joan in jean anouilh's the lark and remains an outstanding interpreter of the heroic maid of orleans, julie harris. george bernard shaw's saint joan is a glorious play and it's one that i read when i was in high school and dearly wanted to be part of. i never have acted in the play professionally, but my high school-- my senior year in high school, i was able to play just the trial scene, which was

i want to go to our panel in new york here, joan. i think one of the most heartening things in this whole story, aside from the women being found and released is charles ramsey, the neighbor, who went to the door. i figured it was a domestic violence dispute. in the new yorkers it's written that a line like that has been offered for an excuse walking away, not for helping a woman break down your neighbor's door. how many women have died as a result? they didn't yet. violence against women generally is not given the attention that it deserves, and for this neighborhood to not have anything inkling of what was happening, about you to and. >> he's a hero. we're going to have to look for things to be happy about in this story. charles ramsey is one of them, but domestic violence action and a scene like this is disgusting and deappraised, but people look away from troubled home and look away from women suffering all the time, so the idea that he didn't, he put his life on the line really to save her is awesome. i don't know what to make.

joan baez was there that year saying -- she was singing one of her anthems. amazing grace. people started day fund, they started to collect money out there. that was just the beginning. we got a call from somebody asking, is dpw doing this? we said yes. i have $50,000, i will support it. we are a private group. this is not tax deductible. we do not care. and they rebuilt some houses. the problem with most people is they could not even teardown their homes. but this is the burning man twist. i love telling this story. being who they were, the culture, at the end of each day, the landscape was strewn with debris. you have to seeing the pictures. they gather up the debris, at night, they turn it into a bonfire. that is part of our culture. then locals started to come around and one woman said, i have never seen anything like this. i have never seen anything like this, but i like it. pretty soon, they were making art. fema is not going to do that for you. and that was just a spontaneous effort. now it has expanded around the world. this came out of burning man, this wild, crazy
