the nation's joan walsh. lawrence o'donnell, host of msnbc's the last word and also the only man that we allowed to be on this show today, lawrence. you know, because you are the lonely only, lawrence, i'm going to let you talk first, how about that? before the women begin, i'm going to let you have your final say. what do you make of this march on washington here today? >> there are already some preliminary estimates indicating that it may be a bigger crowd than we saw there yesterday. we'll have something more definitive on that. this is a precedent that began in 1969, the election of richard nixon was the first one to have protests, significant protests at inauguration, especially the day before that inauguration. when nixon was re-elected in 1972, that's when it went huge, that protest was much, much bigger. 100,000 people on the same day as the inauguration and that inauguration that they were protesting, no one knew that day that that president being sworn in was a year and a half away from being driven

i think if he wins, he's the gift that keeps on giving for democrats. >> back with me, joan walsh, andhael steele. joan? >> it was really heart breaking to watch al franken resign today. excuse me for my voice. i'm not sick. my voice is sick. it had to happen. there were eight allegations. and as i've talked on friends of his, and friends of mine, you could find something wrong every allegation. but you were having to parse it so much. if there were eight, maybe there would be 80. a lot of people are making politics out of this. the democrats wanted to get him out of the way for roy moore. this is not going to help or hurt roy moore. this won't be taken seriously by the republicans. now he's gone. sarah huckabee said the difference is al franken admitted to something and apologized. donald trump didn't. so he is a sexual abuser and the man in the white house isn't as far as republicans are concerned. so this wasn't really a political congratulations that i saw. a calculation as far as i saw. it is powered by women's anger at the "access hollywood" tape and the 16 women who came forward

. >>> joining me now, joan walsh, and noah rothman editor. joan, a lot of democrats wringing their hands over al franken in the last two weeks. it was a no-brainer to them on some of these folks. it was never a no-brainer on franken. all of a sudden today it was. what do you think changed? >> i think we've got eight allegations now, chuck, when there were one or two, a very different thing. i wrote the first day i thought we should wait for more evidence. i can't say that anymore. it looks like a pattern i think as a party, democrats have to be careful they do give women credence. not believe everything. we can't believe everything. what we really want are fair and rapid investigations. at this point i feel the combination of the number of incidents. one from a right wing talk show host, the other a left wing talk show host. >> bipartisanship? >> so -- and then the number and number of female colleagues and now chuck shoop eschumer saying can't be effective anymore. >> like the republicans saying, we have to get off our own island. >> a clever
