bigger than last night and we know the fireworks have to be coming because everybody wants what joe biden has which is the lead in the polls. cory booker has already said he plans to go after biden on his role in the '94 crime bill. is that good for booker? that good for the party. harris will look to repeat her break-out moment when she attacked biden on busing. the question is will she take fire as well. there are seven other candidates. for some of them this is likely the last chance to get the traction they need to stay in the race. so let's begin our coverage. we have political experts standing by tonight. but first let's go to cnn congressional correspondent phil mattingly inside of the debate hall. how do you see it? >> reporter: well, chris, the doors are about to swing open for the audience and the candidates have finished walk-throughs and retiring back for the last-minute session with advisers and everybody is aware of the dynamic. if last night was the progressives versus the moderates, tonight is joe biden versus everyone else and sitting to his right and left will be senator

now here we are, joe biden. there is a lot on the line for joe biden tonight. >> yeah.a very big night for him. in the first debate, he had a lack luster debate. i think everyone is waiting to see if he'll come back and be a little stronger and the expectation is that the attacks will be coming at him just as hard, if not hard he, than they were coming at him last knight time. we expect kamala harris to go after him. cory booker has made it clear that he's planning to go after him. one of the things last night that was very lack luster was the case being made by the moderate lane. and for biden, he needs to make a better argument tonight to basically say, you know, we can do this in a way that is going to excite the base and, versus last night, we were hearing a lot from the moderates. we can't be too bold because we'll scare people. a lot is on biden to make that case tonight. >> that's a hard case to make. that is a really hard case to make. >> he will have to be like neo from the matrix, man. he'll have every bullet coming at him from every single person. so listen.

joe biden's lead in this race has dramatically narrowed. take a look at the top line numbers here. you see this is a four-way race here now at the top. biden, his lead is a narrow one at 22%. followed by kamala harris at 17%. elizabeth warren at 15%. bernie sanders at 14%. let's look at the change just since last month. i think it shows you how dramatic the shift is. what you see here is biden is down 10% points from last month. harris and warren, they have doubled their support in the last month. harris up nine and warren up eight and sanders gone down and buttigieg down one there. we also see the success of kamala harris' debate performance because we asked about it, democrat voters that watched or tuned into the debate, we said who did the best job in the debate. take a look at this. kamala harris gets 41% of debate-watchers saying she did the best job. nobody else is even close. 13% for warren and 10% for biden. another good factor in this poll for kamala harris is people want to know more about her. we asked other thap the candidate you're supporting who do you want to hear mor

reed, you also wrote about joe biden's efforts in iowa. pick up on what she's saying there that people maybe want somebody who's a little bit more ready to take the fight to trump, that's the question. biden didn't seem to necessarily stand above the fray on the debate stage. >> yeah, i talked to a couple dozen voters over the last few days in iowa and the themes that i heard constantly that joe biden's time has passed. i can't tell you how many times i had women voters especially saying we don't want to vote for another old white man. that applied, by the way, to bernie sanders as well and not just the former vice president. >> yeah. >> what, i think, we're going to see from joe biden in the coming weeks and months is a real effort to build the largest ground operation in iowa. they're taking a page from the obama 2008 playbook, from the john kerry 2004 playbook and they're trying to identify voters who are unlikely to show up to the caucuses and get them out and convert a vote, if you will. they've got a special team in chicago of volunt

now we have seen them on a stage with joe biden. we see that they can take on donald trump and actually also take on vice president biden. so i think the question about electability that has shown in the numbers today that people saw women and saw presidents. that is an important shift. >> charlie, i did think those -- those electability numbers from the ugof poll. biden and beto o'rourke both fell double digits. then harris, warren, julian casco as well. electability, what do you make of that right now? >> well, i'm going to be a little bit of an outlier because i think the level of panic should probably only be a 5. this is not the first game. it's the first inning. maybe it's just the first at-bat here. and still 57% of democrats still think that joe biden is the most electability. but i do think that democrats ought to be concerned about what happened last week in terms of how far left, how far from the mainstream some of these leading candidates got. that cnn poll that you've been citing also found that only 21% of adult america

so good news for kamala harris and that top line number concerning for joe biden. >> joe biden tried to paint himself as the front-runner as the most electable in the contest against president trump. what are the numbers mean for him now? >> well, you raise what is his calling card in this race. we asked democrats, wolf, what matters more to you, defeating donald trump or getting a candidate who agrees with you on the issues and it is not even close. six in ten democrats say that they want a candidate that could defeat trump. only 30% of democrats say they want somebody who shares their positions on the issues. and then we asked, okay, well who do you think you could beat trump and 43% of democrats say they believe joe biden could defeat donald trump, nobody else is close.
