nbc's joe fryer is there. joe, what do you see? >> yeah. good morning, guys. in the last hour or so is when authorities and deputies have really been able to get out in the tampa bay area and start assessing the damage just west of here in pinellas county the sheriff's department reporting trees down, power lines down. they are seeing street signs in the road, which is why they are urging people to still stay indoors. it's not safe to be driving around. they want to assess the damage and get things cleaned up. this is the best scenario, millions without power but it could have been worse. a few hours ago we thought it was going to work its way up the coast and create a huge storm surge situation for an area vulnerable, that hasn't seen a hurricane in nearly a century. we spent the night with a family riding it out in tampa. they escaped miami area, came here thinking this is where they would be safe. they felt like irma was following them up the coast. in the end tampa ended up being a safe place to be. they are wondering if their home had any flooding. they a

going to nbc's joe fryer following the story closely from our los angeles bureau. at do we know? >> reporter: yeah. the fire department just gave an update confirming the numbers changing throughout the morning. the latest, four students in all were shot during the shooting this morning. one of those students has died. three more students were taken to the hospital in spokane sacred heart confirms three pediatric patients all in stable condition. the suspect is in custody. the sheriff's department believes there is only one suspect in the case. that person is in custody but no further information given about that suspect, gender, age, or any information at this point about a possible motive. the hospital is expected to be giving a news conference in about 45 minutes from now to update us on the condition of those students who were shot. this all took place around 10:00, 10:15 in the morning west coast time. freeman high school is located about a half hour southeast of spokane in the community of rockford, washington. as far as i can tell, population of the school a

let's go to nbc's joe fryer. he's in tampa this morning and has more on the damage left behind. joe, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. still no shortage of wind here, even though irma is moving north. police deputies have been out for a few hours now assessing the damage. they're finding lots of downed power lines, downed trees, a lot of debris in the roads and traffic lights are out. about a million people in the tampa bay area lost power, the result of a storm that is hitting every part of this state. overnight, hurricane irma unleashed its wrath on florida, the eye wall moving inland, dumping torrential rain and heavy winds on orlando and the tampa bay area, this coming after irma's powerful winds drained water from tampa's beaches, sucking the water out to sea. the hurricane spending all of sunday punishing the sunshine state, making its first landfall in the florida keys, sending water rushing into the streets. after making its second landfall on marco island, irma pounded nearby naples with wind gusts as high as 142 miles an hour -- nearly knocking weather
