and joe fryer is joining us from ridgecrest. i was on the air a little earlier this morning and talking with molly hunter who is staying there and was rocked out of bed by powerful earthquake. and she said that the shaking just kept going and going. and continued with many aftershocks. have you been feeling any? >> reporter: actually the aftershocks at least over the last hour or two have died down. we really haven't felt anything major lately. that by no means means that the threat over. over the next several days or week, the odds of aftershocks are very high, some could be makignitude 5 or 6 and there is one in ten chance that we use see an earthquake that is 7.1 or stronger. so stronger than the one that we have seen so far. as far as damage goes, so far here in ridgecrest, all of the buildings are still standing. there are no reports of any major structural damage or issues november f issues, no fatalities reported. one of the worst things that you see is behind me, the house that caught on fire. there were two structural f

let's go to joe fryer in ridgecrest for us now. and when we were following this after the first quake here, joe, it was like will you be able to sleep at night keeping one eye open, and here it is, another big one happening overnight. >> reporter: yeah. and it's really, you know, caught people offguard. they were used to aftershocks after that 6.4 quake on thursday. there were dozens and dozens of aftershocks. i was here in ridgecrest yesterday morning. it seems like much longer, but yesterday morning. we felt what at the time was the largest aftershock of 5.4. so it was something you noticed but didn't cause any damage. turns out all of that was just a precursor for the 7.1 that hit last night. i want you to see behind me here, this is some of the worst damage we've seen so far, and that's because a fire started, neighbors say, immediately after the earthquake hit. people walked outside and saw this mobile home here on fire. fire crews were able to arrive quickly even though the home went up quickly, they were able to put the fire

joining me now, nbc's joe fryer.? >> we're just now collecting information. we know right now preliminary is magnitude 6.6 earthquake centered near ridgecrest, california, about 140 miles north and east of where we are in los angeles. we can tell you, we felt it here. we were all working in the newsroom. suddenly everyone started looking around. it was one of those rolling earthquakes. not an aggressive shaking one but a rolling earthquake. everyone could feel it. it felt like it kept going longer than we're used to with some of the short earthquakes here in l.a. some people decided to hide under their desks quickly. the news room picked up to check what we can find out. preliminary information is magnitude 6.6. if you look on social media, you see throughout the los angeles area and beyond, there were people who felt it. we're still waiting to see if there's any reports of any significant damage anywhere. we'll try and collect that information and see what else we can learn about it. but this took place about two-ho

let's go straight to nbc's joe fryer. he's in the earthquake's epicenter. appening, joe. you are still feeling multiple -- multiple is an understatement, aftershocks there in the area. >> reporter: yeah, this sequence has produced more than 3,500 tremors so far, and there are actually thousands expected in the coming days, weeks, even months here. that has people on edge. in fact, some have decided they don't want to sleep inside their homes so some are choosing to stay either outside or in tents or in smaller trailers outside because they are nervous about all these aftershocks that we're expected to experience. keep in mind right now, we're about 38 hours removed from friday night's 7.1 earthquake. there was a 34-hour gap between the one on thursday that was 6.4 and the one on friday night with many more aftershocks expected. we don't feel most of them, but every now and then there is a jolt that people feel. what happened friday is still fresh in everyone's mind. we spoke with some folks about what they experienced during that 7.1 earthquake. take a liste

john fryer is in ridgecrest, which is the epicenter. joeorities have been surveying much of the area following the last big quake. what are they finding right now? >> reporter: so far officials here in ridgecrest say there are no reports of major structural damage. in other words, all of the buildings here are still standing. that doesn't mean that there weren't mobile homes and other buildings that were not damaged. there are certainly buildings that were damaged by the earthquake. a few by fire, like the one behind me, others by shaking. of course nerves still remain incredibly high. as you mentioned, more than 3,800 earthquakes caused by this one sequence and thousands are expected over the course of not just several days, but several weeks here. the odds of a magnitude 5.0 are decent, even a magnitude 6.0. still some people aren't staying chances. we have seen reports of some people choosing to either stay outside at night or in tents or smaller trailers because they don't want to be inside because they were so shiny by that 7.1 earthqu

joining us now from the epicenter of the earthquake, joe fryer., are you feeling them today? and what's the latest? >> reporter: we certainly are, cal. there have been dozens of aftershocks and about an hour ago we felt a 5.4 quake. it was something everyone here noticed. that is the strongest one that we've experienced so far. it shouldn't be surprising. we were told yesterday that the odds of a magnitude 5 or higher happening over the next week was 80%. so those are pretty good odds and the odds came true. the question is could something 6.4 or stronger also hit this region? those odds are much lower, about a 9% chance of that happening over the next week the usgs says. not a lot of cleanup to worry about today. some people are checking foundations in homes and things like that. we see one road that was impacted by the earthquake yesterday. for the most part most of the cleanup is limited to cleaning up store shelves. the library here will have a cleanup because books were dumped all over the place but people here know it could have been much wo
