five years ago in the interview you were doing with joe kernin, joe didn't know mark zuckerberg's name. we're talking about valuing this company out five years. technology changes dramatically over five years. isn't about it possible that something else comes along, a bigger, better facebook? >> yes. here's the reason why in 2007 i made that call. facebook even then felt like a mini internet. the entire -- facebook encapsulated almost the entire internet in what it was offering, but it was a scrubbed clean internet for advertisers. think about the super bowl ad, on the super bowl advertisers weren't advertising their company urls, they were advertising their facebook pages. facebook has a billion users, half the internet users in the world so there's never been a company like this. >> right. >> never been a medium where you can target a billion people with one ad. so facebook is it. >> jim, you know, facebook smacebook. five years ago you made a great call on facebook when not a lot of people were thinking about that as an investment and right now there's so many extrapolations like wh

welcome back to "squawk box" right here on cnbc i'm andrew ross sorkin along with becky quick and joe kerninjoe, looking to open about 20 points higher this morning. >> yep so far, so good. here is what's amaking headlines in addition to that. the fed could -- could is the operative term -- taper bond purchases as early as october. that's according to fed governor christopher wahler if you're not familiar with mr. wahler, he's a board governor. he was sworn in, in december and, as you might imagine, video conference yep. he's a pandemic appointee of actually the former president trump. and maybe he's a little more hawkish. i don't know he told cnbc he would be in favor to tighten policy if employment reports for august and september remain strong. consumers are returning in growing numbers to the nation's shopping mall, simon property group. the nation's biggest says sales at its shopping centers rebounded to prepandemic levels in june. david simon says he's hoping the jump in business will encourage retailers to sign new leases and pepsico talked about selling its tropicana juice brand, 3.3

i'm becky quick along with joe kernin and andrew ross sorkin. check out the u.s. expect futures. big day for the markets surprisingly up by 1% for the dow by the end of the day. the dow futures up by 10 points. s&p up by a point, nasdaq up by 7. check out what happened overnight in asia. you'll see that the nikkei was up 1% as well. similar gain for the hang peng. but the shanghai composite down by a quarter point. biggest gainer looks to be the ftse up by .75%. the dax in germany up by 0.25%. crude prices ended the day by 1.50. wti is up against another 16 cents to 47. 48. brent is down by three cents to 48.95. >>> earnings just out now from home depot. the dow component posted a profit of 1.44 a share was eight cents above expectations. revenue also beat analysts' forecasts. the company also raised its four-year guidance to $6.27 a share. we're going to dig through the report -- >> i'm digging. >> -- with an analyst at this point. the stock is looking really strong today. that should help the dow to some extent. since it is in the dow. and i believe that is an all-time high. al
