in the end, joe manchin believes that obamacare should be put in place. it's just that he's been critical of the rollout. i think the democratic party as a whole, if you don't hear them say it publicly, are telling us privately that this is a problem. there are several senate seats that are up in 2014 in states such as arkansas and louisiana, up in alaska. we have a couple of open democratic seats in states such as montana. this is not good for the democratic party. it shows that perhaps they are not governing correctly so they are very upset at the rollout. they are not so upset at the fact that they're getting health care, but the fact is this was bungled. >> they are vulnerable, they are tied to it and they want it to be turned around in time. mark preston, thank you so much. >>> next, suspended from his show and taking heat for controversial comments about homosexuality and race, the patriarch of tv's "duck dynasty" is speaking out. and a tasteless tweet turns a public relations executive into a former public relations executive. what was she thinking

certainly having emissaries like joe manchin help.you think those in favor are learning from how to interface with the gun rights movement? >> that's certainly what gabby giffords and her husband are trying to do with their groups. joe manchin and other legislators are looking to do the same. we'll see, by the way, to jacob's point, how this will play out, say, in 2014. there were a couple of senators, mary landrieu of louisiana, kay hagan of north carolina who took what they thought were tough votes voting for the manchin toomey bill. they may urge people to do this conversely. if the day comes someone pays the price, in arizona, votes against manchin toomey, we could see a sea change. mark glazer from the bloomberg group said it to me. essentially the nra has been the overwhelming force, practically had this issue to itself for the last 20 years. so it's not just that it's going to take a lot of mobilization, more money, et cetera, but also going to take understanding how to communicate to middle america, to those swaths of america

earlier i spoke with west virginia senator joe manchin. i want to start out with the nsa. it made news this week, at least a panel reviewing what it did. what do you make of the advisory panel recommendations? >> the thing we need to do in this country which is our responsibility, especially as elected officials and government as a whole is how do we protect the privacies of each and every american? but also protect the security of our country? there's a fine balance there. so i'm open to listen to all the recommendations that has come out to see if we can improve upon that. without infringing on my rights and my freedoms and my privacy. but also i've got to give a little bit as i understand. i remember the days i used to walk on an airplane without any scrutiny, without any security whatsoever. those days have passed. you know what? i still fly. >> do you think that the program -- the meta data program is getting most, a collection of what appears to be most of if not all of the phone calls made here in the u.s.? and it tells you like where it was placed, who placed it, h

and it was great to hear from joe manchin. joe and i were elected governors together. he a democrat, i a republican. we used to call each other and share ideas on tax reform, on education reform, on getting things done. we loved the environment in which you could actually achieve results. that's the great thing about being a governor. and i look at so many members of the utah state legislature who are here, and with each one of the i can tell you stories about how we able to get things done and there can do attitude. just remarkable. joe then went on to the senate and became terribly frustrated with the culture that existed on capitol hill, something that evan knows a lot about. i went on to china to become our senior diplomat running the embassy there, and we kind of regrouped a little bit when joe and nancy jacobson who really was the power behind no labels initially came and said would you like to become a part of this movement? and i thought what on earth is new labels? is a third party effort to try to shipwreck the republicans and the democrats? is it a bunch of

senator joe manchin warning that continued problems could cause obamacare to, his words, melt down. your own state's governor, chris christie, has called it a train wreck. how worried are you about any of these dire prophecies coming true? >> i'm not worried at all, because it's clear that people wanting to sign up. more and more people are signing up every day. keep in mind, we want people to sign up by today. but if they don't and they wait another day or week or month, they can still sign up. i mean their enrollment may be delayed a few weeks or even a month until february 1st, but for people who are uninsured or can't get an affordable policy or policy with good benefits, the best thing for them to do is to sign up for obama care because they'll get a good benefit package at an affordable price. i want to encourage people to continue to sign up tonight and beyond. even though we have january 1st if you sign up today, if you sign up tomorrow or the next day, you'll probably be enrolled within a few weeks or so. so i don't want people to get too caught up with this deadline. >> th

joe manchin wanted an individual mandate delay.he administration did a miniature one of their own. for all ofced that the consumers who have received cancellations, we do not know how many that was. i have seen an estimate as high as 15 million. the numbers of consumers who received plan cancellation notices -- the coverage did not meet the right -- requirements -- those people had two options. they would not have to sign up for health insurance or face the individual mandate penalty or they were now newly eligible for catastrophic coverage. that is a bare-bones coverage and is a lot cheaper. typical bronze or silver plan on the exchanges. they were given somewhat of a reprieve. that is important because we know a significant portion of consumers would be affected. the administration did announce earlier that they estimate roughly 500 consumers -- 500,000 consumers received cancellations and still have not picked a new plan. we do not know how many will itose to opt out, but could be a significant portion. host: are there other rep

chris comean necessary, former chief of staff of west virginia senator joe manchin. welcome to both of you. >> hi, jon. >> hello. jon: another revision in the laws or rules, monica. another deadline that isn't really a deadline. what's it all mean? >> we have a form of obamacare that resembles very little of what was actually passed and signed into law in march of 2010. there have been so many changes to this law. most of them made unilaterally by the president, by this white house. exemptions, waivers, delays and so on. so it doesn't really resemble what was actually passed. it is also creating enormous confusion. remember, jon, we've had a couple of waves of disaster already. we had the broken website. we had nearly six million people lose their insurance policies. and now, what we're looking at is this idea that so many people have not actually gotten coverage. they may think they have gotten coverage you there the healthcare.gov website or some of the state exchanges but in fact the onus is on the consumer to call the insurer and make sure there was actually some
