joe manchin is at home talking to constituents about this. but together jeff flake and lisa murkowski on the republican side, that's two republicans that mitch mcconnell can't lose. he only has 51. he needs 50 to pass this nomination on the floor. so this was a message to him that, you know what, you don't have the votes for this and for mcconnell, that's everything. so we're still waiting to see what leadership are going to do. lindsey graham went over there. republicans are currently huddling as a group in mcconnell's office figuring out what to do next. the concerns that drove this stemmed from questions around what we didn't know about the corroborating evidence between -- of dr. ford's account, or lack thereof, and mark judge is a significant piece of this. we know senator collins at the meeting said, hey, all i have is a statement from a lawyer. i would like to hear from him. they produced a letter signed by mark judge. there was speculation that was going to be good enough for susan collins. we never got a definitive answer to that que

joe manchin up in internal polls on both sides pretty comfortably. na another deep red state. joe donnelly doing pretty well there. claire mccaskill in missouri holding her own. same with heidi heitkamp. in tennessee phil breseden that guy is like 65-25 favorablity. he's ahead in that state. five states that democrats should be 20 points behind but man they are neck and neck and can win with all of them. >> let's start with tennessee. phil breseden a candidate well-known. former governor, former mayor of nashville running against a republican candidate. clocks in at about 13.3 on the kook scale. no surprise he's ahead in that race. in indiana, we look at donnelly. he's an indiana senator. it's a state where there's still enough proximity to the voters that you can get around that state. they know who he is. they like him. i suspect they are going to return him to office. joe manchin in west virginia, united states senator, former governor of the state, he's known in the state. he's probably looked at more in the state as a west virginian than a democr

i wonder if that might change if joe manchin decides to vote no on this supreme court nominee. told you have something as well. >> reporter: the president is going to west virginia tomorrow. in knowing both flake and manchin over the years i can tell you that they were both taking heat from their party because they would have lunch together on a routine basis as a way of trying to bridge the partisan divide. that seems quite innocuous in the secular world, but inside the capitol that was considered something unexpected and unusual for them to do for a long time. so the fact that even not in washington, while he's in his home state this alliance kasie outlined is important. also, it is joe manchin who is up against the current attorney general of a state the president won by 42 points. manchin himself had previously been governor, never an easy race for a democrat in west virginia. he's a popular person. but this is important. of course manchin voted for neil gorsu gorsuch. of course collins and murkowski are not on the ballot in november. this is the strength of the new block.

it was also senator lisa murkowski, senator collins, senator joe manchin. basically, every undecided senator that republican leaders need to move to completion, they didn't have because of what senator flake did. and that means for at least a week, even though they will start the process tomorrow on the floor, the senate is going to be frozen in wait for the fbi. >> all right, phil mattingly on capitol hill. with all the latest. and while phil's story was going on, we got a comment -- an official statement from the senate judiciary committee. let me read it. it says the senate judiciary committee will request that the trump administration instruct the fbi to conduct a supplemental fbi background investigation with respect to the nomination of judge brett kavanaugh to be an associate justice in the supreme court. the supplemental background investigation would be limited to current, credible allegations against the nominee and must be completed no later than one week from today. we're trying to find out what current, credible allegations means. my guess, and
