in the past, he has bashed joe manchin and wanted president biden alongside him campaigning.going to have a debate tomorrow evening. that would be a seat that democrats could potentially pick up. the senate is going to be where it will be interesting. for the house, i think it was put well this morning, talking about the fact that it is not that the republicans are going to win the house but how many seats they gain the majority by. lisa: we heard the democrats trying to spin inflation around the economy but not a lot of republicans out there. why have they fallen silent on this issue? annmarie: i am not sure they have fallen silent, but they have been talking about this for months. it is part of the general campaigning for them. they are leaning into crime. for democrats, you have seen the shift. and speaker pelosi says we have never said it was just about abortion. it was always about both. some polls were showing that abortion was starting to resonate with voters, but i looked last week at the new york times poll. for me, that showed the economy is so front and center and

the reality, too, not only do they lack the votes on the women's health protection act because joe manchin joined with all 50 republicans to block the passage of the bill but also they lack the votes to change the rules so that they could do it by a simple majority. it's why key proponents of abortion access like senator elizabeth warren have often said to me over the course of these last few months that while they will continue to push the federal government to do everything it can to protect women's access to this care, they are also really looking for two more senate seats. where they pick those up is anybody's guess. that's what they are pushing for so they have the ability to overrule the filibuster and move forward on protections in that way because as things stand right now everything being static, there is no way for congress to do that and that's why it's a ballot box issue. >> jesse, we know abortion was a big talking point in ohio last night. it didn't dominate the debate. where did the candidates want to focus? what were they pressed on? >> reporter: chris, a lot comes down to

ever things holding him back, not only do democrats not have a filibuster proof majority, with joe manchin and kyrsten sinema, they oppose that kind of a filibuster carveout so he would need two democratic senators to join in and join in on that effort. and also holding on to the house which right now is not clear that democrats will be able to do that. we saw of course over the summer following the decision by the supreme court to strike down roe v. wade, a huge gust of momentum on democrats' side following those decisions. clearly abortion rights is something that is galvanizing the democratic base. but more recently, in the last few weeks, over the last month, we've seen inflation remaining high. gas prices beginning to come up again. and most recently polling suggest that voters are far more concerned about the economy and the inflation and prices going up than they are about this issue of abortion. nonetheless, democrats believe that this can be a galvanize factor with their base. with key democrat graphics like women in the suburbs. but again this is a question in the next few weeks.
