joe torres is live. >>reporter:. it looked real. that is the description from the yonkers police commissioner today regarding the suspicious device found by a woman inside her car here in yonkers. she quickly alerted authorities and the response was overwhelming. the yonkers police department, the westchester county bomb squad and even the fbi. take a look. the bomb squad rolled out the robot today to examine and even try to open a small suv parked here on high street and yonkers. when that effort failed, a bomb technician went to look at the vehicle and a car in the parking lot believed to be the one where the device was spotted all is when the woman got into her car. she heard something rattling in the trunk. she went to see what it was, saw the suspicion device, had no idea how it got there, but that is when she called the p. >> it looked like an explosive device. there were wires and other components that made it appear to be a rude meantry type explosive device. >>reporter: in the trunk? >> in the trunk of the vehicle. we're tr

joe torres is on the scene. >> as if this slashing wasn't disturbing enough, consider this. the man police arrested for the crime, his name is ronald thompson. he's 31 years old. he's been arrested 30 times. >> reporter: about 5:30 this morning the manager and co-owner of this dunkin' donuts in kingsbridge asked a homeless man to leave. he did. but police say he returned 10 minutes later, approached the walkup window, reached in and slashed a 34-year-old female worker's face. >> i feel bad for her. she's a good lady. i've been working here for one year and nice lady. it's hard. it's tough. employees told us the victim, doxa patel of flushing worked alongside her husband. doctors closed the facial wound with 7 stitches. this latest slashing has neighborhood people searching for answers. >> i'm curious why now, what's behind it? why are we seeing more of it now? i'm very concerned. >> be very careful. >> reporter: responding officers caught up with the suspect a block and a half away from the crime scene, a homeless man with a lengthy criminal history. >> we're very concerned

joe torres is in the news room with details. >> thousands of students in the newark school district will be tested for lead poisoning after elevated levels of lead were found in the drinking water at nearly half of the city's schools. kids in the early childhood program. last week the city shot off water at 30 different school buildings in newark. 30. students in the meantime have been drinking bottled water. it's unclear at this point how long newark's kids have been exposed to higher concentrations of lead. health experts have said they don't believe the contamination poses any serious risks to the students. today governor christie said he's closely monitoring the situation in newark. >> the public school district, the mayor's office and the d.e.p. have been working well together to deal with the problem, to come forward to now retest, make sure we know the full scope of the problem and to put forward any type of remediation plan. we'll make sure the problem gets addressed. >> leaders have repeatedly said the city's water supply is safe and the situation at the schools is not similar t
