upon my arrival, contact was made with joel by phone.ents after a short period of time and surrender himself. after that time came and passed, joel continue to negotiate on the phone. during the negotiations, joel made suicidal comment stating a very -- he would take bills, utilize firearms, and that he had improvised explosive devices. joel also stated he had hidden several items and is a no cavity. joel open the front door to the residents and threw a bag full of medication out into the driveway before retreating back into the residence and closing the door. that's kind of the flavor of the arrest here. that was march 2nd. they did take him into custody that day. we already under indictment, but after that arrest, federal prosecutors would go on to file additional charges in superseding indictments against him. this tax collector addenda facing 33 different federal felony charges. now, that local official is the subject of that very messy arrest when authorities finally tried to take him into custody in march. right now, that local rep

because this is matt gaetz's friend, joel greenberg.ing investigators about him and matt gaetz, both, paying for sex. including, with an underaged girl. he has been facing 33-felony charges. but today, he pled guilty to six of the 33 felonies. he signed this binding document agreeing to cooperate with prosecutors and testify against other people. if he lies to the prosecutors, affirms here, in this agreement, that he will face perjury charges or obstruction-of-justice charges. he also affirms that if he lies or leaving anything out in cooperating with prosecutors, the other-27 felony charges against him, those are coming back. there have been 33 felonies pending against him. he is pleading guilty to six, so they'll drop the other 27. if he is not a good cooperator, they're going to hit him with those other 27, as well as the six he's now pled guilty to. one of the charges he's pleading to, in this agreement, the child-sex trafficking charge, carries a mandatory-minimum prison sentence of ten years. so, even with this cooperation agreeme

why give joel greenberg a sweetheart deal? ability on cross-examination to say to joel greenberg, you got a sweech, cushy deal? i think that was a tactical mistake by the prosecutors. >> well, that raises a great question. this sweetheart deal you talk of, isn't that usually reserved for people who can help prosecutors get a bigger fish? but from what we know of the reporting, wasn't joel greenberg the big fish here? that's who congressman gaetz was allegedly then loaning the money to. joel greenberg was the guy allegedly setting up these paid-for dates. why would they give him a sweetheart deal to get to, say, matt gaetz? >> yeah, that's a great question, alisyn. prosecutors are and should be very careful in who they chose to give these cooperation deals to. ideally, you want to do what we call cooperate up. you want to cooperate, as you put it, a bigger fish. now, how does matt gaetz and joel greenberg, how does their culpability stack up with regard to these? we don't exactly know. if we think joel greenberg was more involv

they are all in on joel greenberg.e decided, you credit, you believe you can support everything he's told you. it's not a case of, well, we believe 90% of what he said but we don't credit the other-10%. so, if he has told prosecutors that about matt gaetz's conduct with a minor. that means prosecutors believe it and are ready to bank on it. >> and gaetz, obviously, has denied any wrongdoing. has not been charged with anything, at this point. do you have a sense of how quickly charges could come down? because the family was saying they may be extending the timeline through the summer. >> yeah, that makes sense, anderson. as i read the joel greenberg cooperation papers, they are so detailed. my prosecutorial instinct told me they are getting close. they have a lot of information. on the other hand, investigations have a way of spiraling and standing. and you may be now cooperate the ex-girlfriend. she may lead to other leads. so, one of the nice things about being a federal prosecutor is you do have the luxury of time. t

joel greenberg's words mean nothing.'s like a james bond villain without the metal teeth or the nuclear reactors. this guy needs corroboration to get a deal. so he's got to have the venmo receipts, the text messages, the emails. and i got the plea deal here, 86 pages. 60 pages of it are facts, facts to buttress the claims that joel greenberg is making, and he's got to have the receipts. apparently he does or else the feds wouldn't cut a deal with him. but another crucial point is there also have to be some additional witnesses, and i think the feds have them in their back pocket, who will also testify to back up what joel greenberg says. people like the 17-year-old victim here or maybe matt gaetz's ex-girlfriend, who doesn't have an axe to grind. they got along well, and she apparently works currently for florida state government. she'll be tougher to discredit than joel greenberg, or the victim in this case, who is according to reports is now an adult film actress. but not so for the ex-girlfriend, who i think could be

joel greenberg is a brutal cooperating witness.'ve dealt with really bad guys but given the contaduct he's be admitted of and convicted of, he's a tough witness to bank a case on. >> when you say brutal, you mean he's so sleazy his credit is a problem? >> it will be a nightmare for prosecutors because he's their witness. none of this applies to the ex-girlfriend. she doesn't have any serious credibility issues that we know of like joel greenberg and if she testifies consistently with greenberg, she'll reinforce and corroborate his testimony. this is a major development for the prosecutors. >> so right. if she corroborates claims from joel greenberg if his credibility is hard to swallow, what would that mean for how pros c pros c pr prosecutors perceive? >> you stand up and say to a jury, look, joel greenberg is a horrible guy. no question about it. should you take him at his word? not necessarily. if he's backed up by an ex girlfriend who is reliable or by documents, texts, photographs, those are referenced, you can say to a jury n

agreement, joel greenberg pled to participating and organizing ecstasy, sex-fueled parties.e drug and sex parties going on, and here, i think, is one of the key elements he lays out in his plea agreement, and that is one of the individuals who greenberg paid for commercial sex acts was a minor under the age of 18 for part of the time. when greenberg paid her to engage in commercial sex acts with him and others, and it's that "and others" which, of course, is why this is an ongoing federal investigation. and the question, of course, is who were those others? joel greenberg, as part of his plea deal here, has said that he will talk to investigators. he will tell them everything he knows. he will testify. and in exchange for that, all of that will go in about 75 days to the sentencing judge here. so all of that goodwill could impact what sentence he get. right now he's facing at least 12 years in federal prison. but all of the things he tells the investigators could eventually lead them to other people. and while i was speaking to the attorney representing joel greenberg, i sai

when i was a supervisor, if somebody had come to me saying we have this guy joel greenberg involved inicking of a minor but i want to cooperate him, i'd say you better have rock solid proof to back it up and very important, very worthy targets that we are confident we're going to charge before we cooperate a heinous person who committed heinous crimes like joel greenberg. so if these prosecutors are operating with any competency whatsoever they only entered into this deal because they intend to make big charges against important people. >> given the charges against greenberg, he certainly seems to be very high on the sleaze spectrum in terms of his credibility, that's something prosecutors are certainly aware he lacks credibility. they must be confident in something evidence he actually has. i mean, i would imagine they would have taken in his sleaziness into account. >> yeah, anderson, even in the world of cooperating witnesses who all by definition are convicted felons, joel greenberg is about as bad as horrible as it gets and that's why i think we saw this 86-page plea document that

he will not talk on behalf of joel greenberg.n as you noted at the top, again this weekend, matt gaetz has said that he has done absolutely nothing wrong and has broken no laws. craig? >> kerry, stand by. we are trying to get in some of the sketches from the courtroom. in this court filing of greenberg's plea agreement, he agrees, quote, cooperate fully with the united states in the investigation and prosecution of other persons and to testify. as a former federal prosecutor, glen, talk to me about the work that goes into getting one of these plea agreements done and how prosecutors could potentially rely on someone in greenberg's position. >> craig, first let me say, in my 30 years as a prosecutor, i never did draft or execute an 86-page plea agreement. they typically run about 8, 10, 12 pages. i spent a lot of quality time with these 86 pages here. what we see are 60 of the 86 pages are what i would call receipts. hard corroboration of the crimes of not only joel greenberg but the crimes of others. those others are not yet iden

joel greenberg is about as bad, as horrible, as it gets. plea document that randi talked about. that is a very unusual document. i've never put anywhere-near that level of detail into cooperator papers. i actually tried to put as little detail as possible because you don't want to tip anyone off. and i think what prosecutors were telling us, with that document, is we have the goods that backs up joel greenberg. that's why we saw countless references in that document to specific texts, financial records, bank records, hotel records. that's going to be the core of their case, not joel greenberg, himself. >> and, amanda, congressman gaetz certainly denied any wrongdoing. that's important to -- to point out. how do you think -- does the republican party -- how do they navigate all this? i mean, so far, it seems like a lot of people are just sort of saying i don't know anything about it. >> yeah. i mean, i think for republicans in washington. they certainly wouldn't take any kind of action, until charges are filed. and at that point, you might s

they had joel greenberg initial every single page of that. if joel greenberg has a last second change of heart, which is disastrous because he has admitted the crimes to prosecutors or two, if prosecutors learn something new that they didn't already know or know that joel greenberg has lied or withheld information. both of those things are extremely unlikely. i do expect this plea to go forward tomorrow. >> and because he has a bit of a credibility issue, obviously, i'm assuming that if you're prosecuting this case, let's say, elie, you're going to want to look for some sort of corroboration of the things that he's saying. does the ex-girlfriend fill that spot? >> she helps, yeah. corroboration, you said the exact right word. that is the key with any cooperating witness, especially joel greenberg. i've dealt with many many cooperating witnesses. joel greenberg would be among the absolute worst in terms of the crimes he committed, the dishonest he has displayed, of course the sex trafficking of a minor is a heinous crime. what you need to do i

it's all up to joel greenberg.s deal only goes forward if he comes up with the goods. >> so what do you think the chances are that matt gaetz is going to be spending some time with his lawyers, at least on the phone this weekend? >> oh, i think that this really ruined matt gaetz's weekend, because he now knows that not only is joel greenberg, his wing man, taking the plea, but also, that he is representing two federal prosecutors that he has corroboration, he has text messages, e-mails, venmo receipts, and very well may have other individuals like matt gaetz's ex-girlfriend to also back up greenberg, because the feds aren't going to just rely on greenberg's testimony alone. the guy is a walking criminal enterprise and his words mean nothing. he has to have corroboration to be at all credible in front of a grand jury and then ultimately in front of a trial jury. >> so, pete, how long has matt gaetz been talking to prosecutors and that they've been able to come to this agreement, that hays going to cooperate with the

joel, thank you for your time. i'm curious to get your reaction. is the destruction of news organization headquarters a departure from the norm for israeli attacks in gaza? >> unfortunately, no. this is the third building during this campaign that housed media that has been destroyed. we've seen in other campaigns military attacks on media installations. so unfortunately, this is part of the playbook in gaza and not the first time we've seen an incident like this one. >> and what does this mean for press freedom and safety in both gaza and certainly for international news organizations to see what is happening there firsthand? >> well, media installations are civilian objects. it is not legal to attack a civilian object unless it is used for military purposes. israel is alleging that this facility was used by hamas. they have not provided any information publicly to sub be substantiate that claim. the secretary of state, the president, no one has seen that we know of any intelligence to substantiate this claim. and there is a terrible creditability

that's allegedly the letter from joel greenberg to roger stone.of "the daily beast" story. a spokesperson for congressman gaetz issued this statement to cnn. congressman gaetz has never paid for sex, nor has he had sex with a 17-year-old as an adult. "politico" has reported mr. greenberg's threats to make false accusations against others and while "the daily beast" story contains a lot of confessions from mr. greenberg, does not add anything of substance, and certainly, no evidence for the wild and false claims about representative gaetz. in fact, the story goes some way to showing how long representative gaetz was out of touch with mr. greenberg. greenberg's attorney declined to comment to cnn, citing attorney-client privilege. also, that he didn't help. he never took any money from anybody, and he doesn't recall any letter and he's never heard of greenberg implicating the congressman. he said the portions quoted by "the daily beast" are out of context, incomplete, and he would never try to get greenberg a pardon. stone also told "the daily beast

joel greenberg has serious credibility issues.e did plead guilty to falsely accusing a political rival of having sex with a minor. that was just one of six federal charges that he pleaded guilty to, down from 33 charges he was facing. he has entered a cooperation deal so he has to fully cooperate in any investigation. because of his credibility issues, we know it's unlikely investigators take anything joel greenberg says as face value. we know from our reporting that there are other witnesses who have been called before the grand jury and that there are hundreds and hundreds of records that investigators had. so this case does not hinge on the testimony of joel greenberg. the congressman is clearly trying to shift attention to greenberg's credibility even though he's just one tiny piece of this case. we know investigators are still gathering evidence. all of that will likely fall to federal prosecutors here in washington to assess and decide whether they have enough to proceed with an indictment. paula reid, cnn, washington. >>> w
