let's go live to cnn senior vatican analyst john allen in rome with us. lly interesting today. part of a two-pronged piece of outreach by the pope. >> reporter: yeah, john. i have called this sort of a papal double play today. on the one hand, as you indicated, and quite correctly, propose francis said for the next year priests do not have to have special authorization from bishops in order to forgive people for the sin of abortion. it doesn't just apply to women who have had abortion, it applies to anybody who has participated in an abortion, so that could also mean the doctor who performed the procedure or other personnel who were involved, maybe a husband or a boyfriend who was involved. so anybody who had some kind of correction to it. at the same time he has also said that any catholic who goes to confess their sins to a breakaway traditionalist body called the society of st. pius x, which has openly defied the authority of the pope and is in what the church usually calls a schism, nevertheless, for the next year the confessions for those priests here

also john allen. john, if i may begin with you first. i glanced at this letter that has gone to this clemency board and even through the arch diocese of atlanta. how rare is this for them to reach out this way? >> hi, brooke, it's actually not rare at all. whenever the pope visits the country that still has a death penalty and an execution scheduled, it's standard practice for the pope to reach out and try to ask can for clemency. i remember when john paul, now saint john paul was in the united states in 1999. he visited st. louis. at the time there was a death row inmate scheduled for executi execution. that trip u he was at the pope's mass. john paul asked the governor to spare his life, which he actually did. he's now still alive. >> so the letter was successful? >> this is a standard gesture from the pope. you will remember when pope francis spoke to congress, he asked for the abolition of the death penalty and this would be a kind of concrete extension of that position. >> it is interesting, john, as you point out how he did make th

we're also joined by john allen, cnn senior vatican analyst, who is standing by also with cnn's jim sciuttoson, i found myself thinking, if you take the totality of what francis had to say this morning, how unusual it is for any public figure to come to the white house and deliver that entire message. i mean, we can imagine lots of public figures who would come here and talk about the importance of defending marriage and the importance of religious liberty. and one can imagine others who would come here and talk about immigration and climate change. but the idea of one figure who would deliver all of those messages together is quite striking. and quite frankly, i think it's a reminder that this pope, in particular, and really catholic social teaching, in general, just utterly defies the conventional left/right divisions of american politics. and it will be very interesting to track, you know, how political figures in this country and activist dprup grou so on try to process everything the pope said because that doesn't quite neatly serve anyone's agenda as we've organized our political life
