john the baptist parish. the parish that we're in here at the whitney plantation. it's centered by a sculpture by rod morehead from mississippi. in is called "coming home." so we have along the walls here, the names, date of death, ages, and names of the mother of all of these children who died. these are recorded in the church records. so our historian did the research and pupping those records out of the church and recording them here. so here's a large collection of people that are not listed with any name whatsoever. these are all people that are just listed as little slave, negro slave girl, negro slave boy. some of these people who have no names were, perhaps, too young. they died too young to be named. sometimes we see this notation when people were 2 years old or 3 years old. people who definitely had payments that, but even at death were just, you know, when they were barn they were born into a lower class, of course, as enslaved people. it was not seen as important enough to record the names that they had or to look into it to find out what their name was

berkshires, massachusetts, preacher, by the name of the elder john leland as he was called was a very well-known proponent of religious freedom. he's a baptist in a congregational society and had suffered prejudice as a result of that. and he and his colleagues up there in the berkshires created this mammoth 1,200 pound cheese produced by as reverend leland described it, 900 cows, not one of them a federalist. the cheese was the size of a large millstone and was brought down on a six-horse wagon from massachusetts, and all along the way, leland would stop in these towns and cities and give speeches about religious freedom. the cheese was kind of the drawing card for that. people came to see the cheese and wound up hearing reverend leland as well as seeing the cheese. and when leland got it to the white house, jefferson had it set up in the east room and opened the doors for the guests to come in and sample the cheese and used it as kind of a -- kind of a metaphor for the common man and the produce of farms and working people who were the backbone of the country and produced goods like the mammoth cheese. it was quite an entertaining event, a
