cnn's john berman is reporting from lviv, ukraine. good morning to you. this attack on a fuel depo inside russia would be a capably of doing so, it raises questions how russia would respond. >> reporter: yeah, no question about that, jim. you bring up rightly after russia specifically hit any number of fuel depos across ukraine. including one behind me, one week ago. an extraordinary counterattract, reprisal attack by the ukrainian forces, russia says 300 barrels of fuel are on fire. phil black is in lviv. we got a response i understand ukranian officials on this, so what are they now saying? >> reporter: john, it is a surprisingly unclear almost cagey response from ukrainians. we tart with what we know. this facility we see it going up in flames. we have video shows in the moments before that initial blast incoming fire impacting that site. so it would show that someone shot it a. . the question is who? it is a local russian officials said two ukrainian borders flew low over russian territory and fired at that fuel storage sight, creating that explosion.

i'm john berman in for anderson. it is a reversal of roles to be sure, the russians admitting to a surprising and seemingly successful attack against a russian fuel depot, meanwhile the ukrainians typical vocal about their successes are a little quiet, not to mention a bit cryptic about what happened. beyond this case, there are new examples of apparently successful operations by ukrainian forces. new satellite photos from maxar technologies tonight confirm the pentagon estimation that the russian military has likely left an airport outside kyiv. the capture of this airport back in february was one of the first big victories of the war by the russians. these images come to us a day after the mayor of the town, also outside the capitol says they have been liberated from the russians. still, we can't stress enough that the russian missile strikes continue to exact a deadly toll here. one official in the northern city of chernihiv told me a hospital there was hit and that people are suffering. >> we have no electricity,
