jay carney, press secretary, was asked about this only a short time ago, even before we heard exactly what the speaker of the house, john presentin . again this afternoon. but jay carney said none of this is acceptable. he referred to it as blatant extortion. if there has been any movement by this white house, i think it is toward their willingness to better consider a long-term negotiation. it's the idea, i think, that they're most upset by, the idea they would be negotiating a year delay. obviously, they're not going to put up with that or defunding over the president's key signature health care achievement for what is a one-month, two-month, maybe two-and-a-half month cr, continuing resolution. if there was some discussion about some changes are for a year extension, they may be inclined to have those conversations. but obviously it cannot be things that undermine the signature legislative achievement being obamacare, his health care law. >> and this shutdown itself, this potential shutdown, is likely to be catastrophic, because not a single appropriations bill has been passed, has it? >> no. you're exactly right. ac

this week, indeed this afternoon secretary of state john kerry spoke to reporters about the situation in syria and at the white house briefing jay carney thawing of the u.s. relationship with iran. kristin was at the briefing and joins us now. good afternoon. what did jay carney say when he was pressed on the topic of u.s.-iran relations. >> i think the headline is that carney said that president obama would be open to meeting with iran's president next week at the u.n. general assembly and the comments come after he granted exclusive interview to nbc's ann curry and told her he has no plans to develop nuclear weapons. carney called that rhetoric positive but he says that action or actions are more important than words, the white house would like to see concrete steps taken by iran proving that they are getting rid of their nuclear weapons program. i can say that carney also pointed to some actual steps iran has taken that seem to suggest they are this new leader wants to be seen as more moderate and just released 11 political prisoners but making the point that still isn't the same as taking steps to get rid of his nuclear weapons pro

john kerry headed to jegeneva to meet with his russian counterpart. the white house is being a bit vague about a time line today during the white house briefing. jay carney would not give specifics about what type of a time line the president would like to set for getting this diplomatic option resolved. there's a lot of skepticism this can work because syria is a war torn nation and stockpiles are spread out all over the country. there's a lot of questions how that would actually be implemented. this nation as you pointed out in the introduction is war weary, the majority of americans are opposed to any type of military intervention. president didn't seem to have the votes in congress so to some extent this is an out for president obama, another option moving forward. there's no better reminder of why this country is to war weary than the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. he spent the morning paying tribute to those who lost their lives 12 years ago on this date and seemed to make a subtle reference to the stigs decision whether or not to use force in syria. >> let us have the wisdom to know while force is at times necessary, force alone cannot build the

carney took questions about meetings about syria between john kerry -- another related topic on thursday'sbriefing was the new york times op-ed written by the rotten -- russian president, couldn't. putin. >> on syria, i wonder what the president's reaction was to president clinton's op-ed -- president putin's op-ed. i him -- unlike russia, the united states stands up for human rights in our own country around the world. we believe it is advanced when children are not gassed to death by a dictator. it is worth noting russia is isolated and alone in claiming the opposition for the chemical attack. we have seen -- , fighting on siv's behalf in syria, publicly blamed the assad regime for the attack. in addition to the intelligence pertaining to the preparations for the attack, it is common sense the opposition does not have the capability to have carried out such a large scale targeting. i think it is also worth pointing out there is a great in the placement of an op- ed like this. it reflects the truly wonderful tradition not shared by russia. int has been on a decrease the past seven or so y
