i am john dickerson.e sat down with ronald reagan's secretary of state, george shultz last week, he told us that the trump presidency so far has been up and down. among the ups, he praised several of mr. trump's cabinet picks, including secretary of defense james mattis, his colleague at the hoover institution at stanford university, and as for not so up, the early defeat of the president's travel ban. >> what would you say are the down parts of the administration so far? >> well, obviously, when you roll out a big initiative and it blows up, that is a downer. i think it is important for a president to get off to a start where people see, says what he means, means what he says and carry out what he starts to carry out. >> dickerson: you said that your advice to president trump was that he not let the white house dominate anything. what does that mean? >> that has become a tendency to put decision making and even operation malthings in the white house. the white house staff has grown a lot, the nse staff h

. >> pelley: what we saw, john dickerson, is the setup story fe great battle that is about to happen, repealing the ferlazzo care act. >> and that's probably where the next rising star in the democratic party is found. what's interesting to me about president trump is this was an evolution from certainly the inaugural address in terms of all the same themes at the heart of it, but a kinder package, less confrontational, but is this a temporary moment or does he start to govern in this fashion? and, also, if you're a member of congress what, did you get out of this speech that you can now use in your town halls or in trawking to your constituents? that's the real benefit of a speech like this. president has done what he can with executive orders. now he's got to be the leader of the republicans, and we've got to look for something in the speech that they can use. i'm not sure there's actually something in there for them to use. good for him. but he needs, also, for it to be good for republicans. >> well, you're hearing people say it's been 40 days and 40 nights since he's been in the w

john dickerson is our cbs news political director and the anchor of "face the nation." john, how does the white house put the russia investigations behind it? >> well, the president needs to do what he did yesterday and today which is talk about school choice, jobs, his plans for national defense. presidents stay afloat during these investigative periods by showing voters, "look at all the work i'm doing." what dooms presidencies is not being truthful and that's happened twice now on the russian front, first with national security adviser michael flynn, who lied about the nature of his contact with that russian ambassador. and now with jeff sessions, who even the president admitted was not accurate. what does this is it makes a bad story worse tincreases the suspicion of the administration and puts everybody in the administration in a defensive crouch, which makes it hard to focus on what the president was elected to do. >> pelley: john, tuesday, you and i watched a very presidential speech to the congress, and then today, the president had another twitter tantrum. what

we'll turn now to john dickerson, our cbs news political director and the an consider of "face the nation." john, is there a way forward for health care? >> well, to go back to the health care, the president can do it the way he just tried, which is only with republican votes. or he can try for actual bipartisan legislation with democrats. but that means taking on some of their ideas, and if he takes on democratic ideas in earnest, then he's going to lose votes from his own party. that may be why today he said he's going to move on to reforming taxes, but that's going to be hard sell, too. the president has learned it's easier to sell himself in a campaign where people only need to make one choice or another. with legislation there are lots of complicated trade-offs. >> pelley: the courts have knocked down the president's immigration ban and the president can't seem to get out of his own way because of his penchant for falsehoods. how does this white house get back on track? >> kris:>> reporter: voters aret concerned about jobs and the economy and immigration. you can imagine him returnin

i am john dickerson. for the most part this past week president trump has been working behind the scenes to fulfill one of his biggest campaign promises, repealing and replacing obamacare. that left the public spotlight to house speaker paul ryan, who went as far as rolling up his sleeves and making his case with charts and graphs. when we sat down with the speaker yesterday, he told us he was excited about the reaction to the bill. >> dickerson: you have conservative governors and conservative members of the house and aarp, the american medical association, american hospital association, the health insurance lobby, all coming out against this. you are pleased with the reaction, the reaction has been awful. >> i wouldn't say the reaction has been awful. i think the reaction is, everybody wants to compare this to obamacare as if they can keep these guarantees going, as if we are going to have obamacare plans and we are just going to finance ate different way. this is repealing and replacing obamacare so th

for some insight into this, let's bring in john dickerson, the anchor the "face the nation" and our chief washington correspondent. john, what do you see in the president's tweet today on flynn and immunity? >> well, normally, a president would want to steer away from a bad story. the president could have talked about his supreme court nominee or he could have talked about jobs, which is the issue that voters care the most about. instead, he offered that legal advice to flynn and said the investigation was partisan. that's an attempt to make the whole business seem like a political muddle, a democratic plot. but the problem is that james comey, the director of the f.b.i., is leading one branch of the investigation, and for the last self months, democrats have been blaming director comey for his investigation of hillary clinton during the last election. so he's hardly a democratic stooge. >> pelley: now, democrats say that the house investigation has been tainted because the chairman of the intelligence committee there has been cooperating with the white house. how is that going to shake o

with us is face the nation host john dickerson. as a relatively new politician, trump really isn't used to losing. he's basically batting 1000 to this point. why did the bill not get total support from republicans? >> there was a group of conservative republicans in the house who wanted to see it give more to insurance companies to do as they please, remove more mandates than the paul ryan designed plan did. the argument was once you remove the mandates it gives more freedom to insurance companies to provide plans that might be attractive to people who really only want catastrophic coverage. the hope was that those paired down plans would be cheaper and that would increase coverage and flexibility would create market conditions that would drive down prices. that was the argument they had. it was not an argument that the president was willing to go all the way on. so they were not able compromise among republicans in what was a strategy to get this passed with votes of 100%. >> correct me if i am wrong but these freedom caucus membe

joining us now is host of the face the nation john dickerson , john, this has been a day, what happens now? >> well, that is the big question what happens now. the president said he wants to move on to tax reform, but that has got to be a very complicated thing. that is not any picnic either and a lot of the same complexities he was introduce todd this law he will now also face. the thing to watch for in the next couple daises will there grow to be any distance between president trump and house speaker paul ryan. they worked very closely on this bill, basically the president, picking up sales job of the bill that was designed by paul ryan and republicans in the house. that was notable because the president, attacked paul ryan numerous times during the campaign. they work well together but they were unsuccessful. a lot of the presidential is have been attacking paul ryan in the press. so does that continue. reason that is important if is there a bad relationship between two of them it is harder to get these more complicated things done in the future. >> president started out with a lot
