has faced adversity and challenges, he always in john hileman's assertion has come out victorious in ho how will the president meet the challenges of this debate? >> thanks for having me on, tamron. >> sure. >> john hileman is completely right about the president's past performances. he improves steadily over the course of a campaign. i disagree with your panelists in one instance. i think there's more pressure on mitt romney in this debate because no lie can stand forever, tamron. in the last debate mitt romney put on a spectacular performance, but he was successful because he was deceptive and misleading, and now i think that with real american voters in that room asking questions of both candidates, he's going to have to have a good deal more candor about his tax plan, his nonexistent jobs plan, about what he intends to do with medicare and social security. they're going to deny benefits to seniors if you look at his plan. he'll be challenged by the voters in the room and certainly challenged by barack obama who is his own toughest critic. he'll be ready for this confrontation. >>

the john hileman, i'm so glad you're here so we can talk about this. >> there's no where i'd rather ben your piece you say clinton is revelling in seeing his legacy restored to what he regards as its rightful status a restoration that will mightily benefit his wife if she hurls herself at the white house again in 2016. >> so 2016 starts now? >> it does, look, the democratic party is already looking for it and a lot of people around hillary clinton are wondering what she's going to do. every other candidate has to kind of hang fire. they're all frozen in place until she decides what she's going to do because it has a huge impact on fund raisers and donors. and her husband really wants her to run and he's telling her he wants her to run and he's not putting pressure on her but he's going to be her biggest booster. >> you also write the opening premise under most democrats is that if hillary does choose to dive in, the nomination will be more than herself for the taking. it will be handed to her on a silver salver. my understanding from people in the world of both of these people, hillary

john hileman had a little fun of governor romney's expense regarding what we might see tonight. >> i'm mitt romney, and i'm running in the middle. i'm running in the middle. >> running in the middle has hileman tried to mime him. the president arrived in florida only moments ago had a 15-point lead and some of the polls on foreign policy. that gap has now closed to four points. the president's biggest challenge tonight could be the ongoing questions regarding libya. >> he spoke to this last week in the debate. i'm sure it's going to be a topic tonight. i think he'll say, look, this investigation is ongoing. we are working at home. we want to get to the bottom of what happened so we can make sure it never happens again but bringing those who killed four american people to justice. >> let me bring in the political panel. michael smirkonish and chris covines and chip saltzman. let's start off with the obvious. everyone wants to see what happens with libya, chris. it seems as governor romney after that awkward moment trying to press the president turned out to be wrong, was off his game th

let's start with john hileman. neck-and-neck whether you're looking at the national polls or the battleground state polls. >> yeah, that's right. there's no question about it, joe. you can see that as we've gotten a little further away from the first debate where president obama performed so poorly, you can see that the lingering effects have been less than we might have thought before. the national numbers are back to jump ball. i keep looking at ohio at the end. the closer we get to election day, the more we have to think about the past 270 electoral votes and that ohio number at 5 is still a big problem for mitt romney if he's going to get all of the way there. >> if mitt romney cannot win ohio -- and at this point you have early voting going in, absentee voting going in. that's happening in 43 state. you're most concerned about ohio. if you're down by five percentage points in a poll, some say it's 2, some say it's 3, but if we are sitting at 4, 5%, that's happening where early voting is going on. mitt romney -
