john huddy is live from israel-gaza border right now. john, what's the latest? >> reporter: well, the search continues for that missing soldier who is believed to have been abducted, taken by hamas militants. this as the fighting has continued all day. we saw heavy artillery fire earlier this afternoon targeting the area outside of a town called rafah. this is in the most southern part of the gaza strip. and this is, that area is where according to military officials, just an hour 1/2 in to the 72-hour cease-fire, israeli ground troops were ambushed by hamas militants. now two soldiers we understand were killed and again, that third is believed to have been abducted by those militants. by the way the ground forces were working, were doing demolition work on one of hamas's cross-border tunnels when they were ambushed. we're hearing about a high casualty rate at this point, in an around rafah. we don't have exact number because obviously things continue to develop by the hour. so fluid at this point. but again the fighting continues in southern gaza. up here in th

john huddy with the latest for us. reporter: in the past two days we haven't heard the code red sirens going off signaling incoming rockets. so the question is at this point while israel has agreed to suspend the cease-fire, will hamas do the same? take a look, earlier today there was a huge rally in gaza city, thousands of people supporting hamas and one of the leaders continued the militant groups saying his finger is on the trigger, that is willing to continue to fight if the demands are not met including lifting the blockade of gaza. first and foremost, israel wants him off to decide. this could be a long-term negotiation, the question is they have agreed to the extension, will hamas to the same? this is t the continue to see te aftermath of the war of the bloody fighting in gaza, people returning to their homes, neighborhoods reduced to rubble. both sides on different pages of more long-term agreements and those negotiations continuing in cairo, egypt, but the clock is ticking to see if the 72 hours cruise will be

john huddy reports live yet again between the border between israel and gaza. john, hello. >> reporter: bill and heather, good morning to you. right now we understand there is intense fight going on in southern gaza. that's where the israeli military believes one of its soldiers as you mentioned was abducted, cast captured by hamas militants. what we're hearing what we understand according to the israeli military this happened two hours into the cease-fire that started 8:00 this morning local time. now the soldiers were doing demolition work on one of hamas's cross-border tunnels when they were ambushed by hamas militants according to israeli military. all this happened near the southern most gaza city rafah, right along the egyptian border. two soldiers what we're hearing have been killed. another soldier according israeli commanders they believe was abducted. there is intense fight going on as i mentioned. we got to see some heavy artillery involved in that fight. take a look. these are 155-millimeter how witser cannons and they open fire after the cease-fire

john huddy has the report from gossett. >> the celebration continues tonight on the streets of gaza cityhere we hear people on the streets. they are firing weapons in the air and we are hearing music. here at the hotel there is even a pool party going on. a contract what we have seen over seven weeks of fighting. just an hour before a barrage of rockets were fired at israel from gossett and israel responding with airstrikes. that's been the case all week. stepping up their attacks on hamas militants leveling high-rise buildings, killing several more people. so far over the seven weeks, more than 21,000 palestinians have been killed. more than 10,500 wounded. another israeli citizen was killed by mortar fire ringgit to totals of 69. let's talk about the deal. israel has agreed to the blockade restrictions to allow humanitarian supplies and relief supplies and construction materials and also eases offshore fishing restrictions as well. if the cease-fire holds, it will be discussed in a month in terms of the demands to build and airport seaport. but in this case the cease-fire is in effect.

john huddy live on israel-gaza border with more. john? >> reporter: jenna, the cease-fire is holding. now over 10 hours into it but before it went into effect at 8:00 local time this morning, there was rocket and mortar fire from gaza into israel. we saw some of the damage. take a look. we're in a kibbutz, a community right along the border, seconds before the cease-fire was hit by mortar attacks, a mortar landed here. you can see a chunk taken out of the concrete. there was so much shrapnel, follow me over here. you can see the ash right there and the door was split. all of the chunks of shrapnel that went through. this is the inside of the home. i meep just everywhere. the israeli air force also attacked targets in gaza before the cease-fire started. at this point, israel pulled all of its troops out of gaza after destroying hamas's 32 cross-border tunnels. to give youd idea how things are being scaled back, this army camp yesterday was covered with tents. there were hundreds of infantry soldiers. there were dozens more apc's. now every

john huddy is live in our middle east bureau with the very latest on this. john, how tense is it? >> reporter: it's very tense, and it's increasingly dangerous. in fact, nearly three dozen u.n. peacekeepers managed to escape syria today and cross the border back into israel after being tracked several days by islamic militants riext now israeli troops remain posted along the border with syria because of the situation, the hostilities and how dangerous it is at this point, monitoring what's going on. earlier today the al qaeda linked militants known as the nus ra front attacked 40 filipino troops manning a u.n. camp in the golan heights. that camp remains under fire according to a statement. but at this point no word of fatalities. a couple of miles away, as we mentioned, another u.n. camp was evacuated because of the ongoing fighting. all this as the whereabouts of 44 other u.n. peacekeepers taken by islamic militants earlier this week remains unknown, though a u.n. official said that based on reports coming in they are, quote, safe and sound. there's also reportedly negotiations

john huddy joins us live from israel-gaza border with the very latest. john? >> reporter: uma the search continues for the soldier as fighting does as well in southern gaza and northern gaza. we're hearing outgoing mortar fire, israeli mortar fire on that part of the strip. it has been an intense fight in the southern part of gaza. that is mortar fire again right there, i don't know if you heard that, after that soldier was according to military officials, captured, abducted by hamas militants. this again, as, we're hearing a lot of action here in, basically here's what happened earlier today. these are 155-millimeter howitzer cannons. they opened fire again after the cease-fire ended when according to military officials hamas militants ambushed israeli soldiers in the southern part of the gaza strip when they came out of one of the tunnels. now these started firing right after that targeting towards the city of rafah, trying to escape, prevent the militants from getting away. two soldiers were killed during the ambush. again the search resumes for that third
