the local papers described republican governor john kasich as humbled by that experience.ut after the union rights thing just got trounced in the polls in ohio, it actually got worse for him after that and for the ohio republican party. because it wasn't just that setback over trying to strip union rights. governor kasich also signed a law that cut the time for early voting in half. three months after that first truck rolled up with the petitions to repeal his union law, look, the second truck rolled in to the capitol. this one with petitions to overturn the other law. this one with petitions to overturn the law against early voting. ohio voters just did not like that law, either. and, look, look who was there that day. obama for america. ohio. the obama campaign has been working in ohio all along, organizing these campaigns, working these interregnum elections in ohio. rather than risk losing another referendum by 20-some-odd points ohio republicans caved. when they saw the truck roll up with those petitions, they just caved. they decided to repeal their own law, themselv

ohio, griff jenkins spoke one on one with john kasich. >> reporter: governor, a matter of days now, what ohioans to vote for governor romney? >> i think people are trying to figure out what we're going to do about the undecided voters. it's hard to believe that at this point anybody could be undecided. what you can do is see romney living in ohio. i wonder if we can get him to pay income taxes while he is here. in all seriousness, first debate changed the whole debate in ohio. romney gained tremendous momentum. you see great momentum across the state. people are enthusiastic and the polls indicate that republicans are sort more intensely motivated. you keep that up and you search for undecided voters. he needs to be here. the more people see him and more they like him and more they get him. >> reporter: we saw you the rnc and you were talking about the story of ohio. giving folks a chance to rebuild things. you talked about the remarkable turn around from 48th in country for job creation to 4th. how much is a part of that happening with this race? >> well, what i say, we've done better t

look, look at john kasich. i learned a lot from that man. came as a young guy in congress under his leadership. following the same trail he blazed. here is a guy, who sees a problem and runs at the problem. that is what leadership is. we got big problems. we do not want a president blaming somebody else for four years. we do not want a president ducking the tough issues, demagoguing the other party. we want a president who will lead and fix this mess and solve our problems and get this country back on the right track. [applause] so it is not enough for us to complain about the broken promises or to simply highlight the fact that president obama cannot run on his record so he is trying to distort hours and distract people to win by default. this is why we are offering specific solutions, specific ideas in how to create 12 million jobs, how to get people back to work, how to confront our problems. number one, and here in ohio, here in this part of ohio, we have so much energy in this country. let's use this energy and put people back to work.

the irony is for mitt romney, is that john kasich who you saw in the piece, the governor, is extollinghese good news that we just heard. and the romney people don't want to hear that because part of their message is we've got the economic key. and it can't have already happened in ohio under barack obama's watch. >> woodruff: let's broaden it out. you said that you were talking to david about the difference between ohio and the rest of the country, what does it look like across the country right know in the campaign? >> you know, i have read so many very confident people over the last 24 hourx totally confident that obama is going to win or that romney is going to win. i don't think we can know. i think something will happen the last three days, there will be a shift and something will happen. i do think there has been a contrast in how the campaigns are operating in the last couple of weeks. and romney's trying to go big with big change. paul ryan gave i think quite a good speech on social mobility and poverty earlier in the week. romney gave what was billed as a major speech on the e

wisconsin, scott had to go up against theecall to get collective bargaining with the unions, and, john kasich,he same in ohio and, he has gone out and had about 18 tax cut plans, he's straightened out the tax coden ohio and these are the types of things either presidential candidate needs to implement, ing forward. to startreating jobs again. >> susan, john makes a good point, fighting unions and collective bargaining, going up against regulations. those arell things that seem to be working on the state level. should the candidates be looking at this? >> you know, on the regulatory ont i do agree with john bu the notion that tax rates are the panacea and the policy magic nd is completely false. if you look at iowa, for instance they had a 1% - highest corporate tax rate of any state in the country and the lowest unemployment rates, 5. % and nevada almost the lowest tax burden on a personal and corporate level, almost the highestnemployment rate. tax rates are not the panacea, the governoromney and a lot of republicans pretend they are, but i think the business climate is anmportant issue and
