the most overlooked ohio governor john kasich.ocratic strategist and formal congressional candidate, good to see you. let me start with you since you're representing republicans here. a lot of people will be surprised to hear john kasich's name. why in your mind might he be a contender? >> he's compelling. all rods to victory go through ohio. he's developed enough of a profile nationally with reform on tacks not as far as walker or christie but made concessions for unions. a good demeanor, american, blue-collar manner lacked by john mccain. a lot of support nontraditional base, a lot of african-americans support him in ohio. those are the virtues someone wants to see from their candidate. >> we look at the latest poll with 10 republicans, he had only 2%. the highest was 13% at paul ryan. we all know how fickle politics are. what do you make of jeb bush. those comments to me were indicative of a man quite seriously considering a run. >> long history of jeb in the state of florida. i think he definitely is sort of a changer for the

i think one reason john kasich opted for a federal medicaid subsidy is that one third of our state budget goes to medicaid expenses. the other aspect of your question is equally good. what is a libertarian? my son is a libertarian. someone who wants less government on every issue domain. [unintelligible] what? no, he is not that. there are four issues -- civil rights issues, socio-cultural issues. libertarians are different from tea partiers. they want less government on all domains. they do not want government to intervene. >> but there are not many people like that. in the data, support for the tea party is correlated with conservatism across all issue domains. tea party supporters are more conservative on economic issues. that is the strongest. but they are also more conservative on social issues. i did not look at foreign policy issues, but i would suspect that as well. >> but generally, conservatives want government to intervene on socio-cultural dimensions to -- sociocultural issues to establish normality. libertarians are not concerned about that. they are concerned about liberty.

you could have a republican like john kasich who is kind of mentioned occasionally the governor of ohioump out because, as you mentioned in your piece, at this time in the 2008 cycle, barack obama was nowhere. he was not on the list of pollsters were asking people did. things did change. >> governor kasich would be predictable. use 20d be chairman of the budget committee. governor of a big state and an important state. but, i mean, could it be someone like you even mentioned a sports figure. can you imagine sports figure i guess arnold schwarzenegger an actor. >> i don't know about a sports figure. certainly a lot of republicans looking for someone who is outside of politics. we saw that in 2012 with someone like herman cain who received a the love support as independent businessman that was his brand. >> a lot of people being critical of president obama because he didn't have a lot of experience. he had never been a governor. he was a state senator and they criticized for voting present. he was a u.s. senator for short time. he came to the job and they were jill critical of him not hav

ohio governor john kasich up for re-election, a rare gop governor who expanded medicaid in his state.ut on tuesday a tea partyer, ted stevenot challenged he will challenge kasich on the right. it seemed up until that point that kasich was on pretty solid footing. so what's your take, nia, on this race? >> you know, i think he's still pretty much on solid footing still. this candidate doesn't look that serious. you have to look at kasich. he's very politically smart. i think the nod probably goes to him. i think across the country you'll see these tea party challenges from the right, but i think in this case, my money is on kasich, and i think if he does win he would look like a strong candidate also for 2016. >> chris, one of the things that strikes me is in these governors race where is we're talking about potentially having a tea party challenger, that's different than a jergerrymander congressional district because they can't go as far to the right. do you agree with that theory? >> yeah. it boxes them in, especially in a state like ohio where this was a state that, you know, three

scott walker, john kasich, rick perry, bobby jindal, at least two u.s.enators in ted cruz and rand paul. it will be a lively race. but there is no reason christie -- at this moment should be counted out. he's a serious person and has a pretty powerful, compelling story to tell. >> what about jeb bush, the former florida governor? >> well, if general wants to run, jen is automatically a formidable national figure. he is one of the most creative figures in the last 30 years. i really admire him. i think he is the best politician in the bush family. although george p., his son, may come along pretty rapidly and rival that. but jen is a great talent. if he decides he wants to win the race, he would add an enormous amount. that would expand my point. a bunch of very effective republicans running. meanwhile, the democrats have this challenge they have an over oh whelming front runner for whom there is no enthusiasm. and i think it will be interesting to see how secretary clinton overcomes that dilemma that she has been around since she was a field person in 19

if this is the kind of thing -- if john kasich is able to get through this, fine. he was able to do that. that to me is the next question. it could be millions more right now enrolled in the 25 states. get in line. is that going start to happen this year? >> that's a question i always had. the denial of coverage strategy that we will just deny people this coverage and encourage them to deny and it complicated way of doing. constituent service let alone positive particulars. >> it has been interesting watching the republicans message for the last few months. they have been -- critics of the implementation of obama air. they really -- lot of ways are almost giving the blueprint of how to fix the program. and so i think that message comes in on itself and -- makes the repeal very difficult to continue talking about it. they are saying that fix that -- fix the website. improv some of the gaps in the coverage. some of the things that were never intended. you actually have all these republican talking points that are going to be a bit of a loophole. i don't think that --

john kasich is the governor of ohio. he and i came to know one another when we were both elected to the house of representatives some years ago. he's a republican. he was one of the few who won in 1982 and went on to become the governor of his state. he had a moment of reflection the other day and i'm going to paraphrase it. but he said, i'd like to say to my republican friends, when you die and get to the pearly gates, st. peter is not going to ask you how much you invested in your life in making government smaller. you're going to be asked, what did you do to help the poor while you were on earth? and that, i think, is a legitimate question that governor kasich raised not just for republicans but for all of us. what have we done to help those people who are struggling to get by? those who really would be interested in a long-term debate about growing the economy but are more interested in putting food on the table today. that's what it's all about. the war on poverty successfully raised americans out of poverty. the go
