john kasich put out his tax plan.e cut taxes for businesses and the wealthiest bracket, eliminated the state tax, and balanced the budget within eight years. here is how he framed it at a national community college and new hampshire. john kasich: i will immediately put us on a path to a balanced budget and i will get it done within eight years. within the first 100 days we will have that plan to balance the budget. and to keep it balanced i will start the process to amend our constitution to require washington to balance its budget every single year, like states and families in america. mark: we're going to bring in our -- he has written a lot of taxes, tell us what you think about his tax plan as a matter of policy. how: -- al: i make great fan of john kasich, as you know. this is voodoo economics. he proposed something very similar 17 years ago in the house when he was the budget committee chairman. we had a $1.5 trillion surplus. he said an act of this tax cut and we will still have a surplus. it led to endless def

if you are john kasich.are looking for an opening, throwing your hands up, saying, look, this is ridiculous, trying to find a way to perhaps appeal to establishment types, more moderate republicans, but jeb bush is also going to be looking for that kind of opening, marco rubio has done perhaps the best out of the more experienced politicians lately. he has been willing to take on trump, perhaps he's willing to take on carson, too. lindsay graham, who is not going to be on the main stage made some comments similar to kasichs, sort of throwing his hands up, saying what's going on here? so, yeah, with the iowa caucuses, a little more than three months out at this point. you will see other candidates who have been slowly building, finally starting to get a bit more compass prated, a bit more willing to sort of go negative. >> quickly on the democratic side of the race, many of you may have been sleeping or watching baseball. she was essentially asked, which candidate she would rather face or which one she could

got to pick somebody who has experience, somebody with the know-how, discipline. >> ohio governor john kasich taking a shot at the so-called outsiders in the race including donald trump and ben carson. james, that was clearly thought out, strategic play. why do you think kasich did that and will it help him? >> he's trying to present himself as the conservative re former who has gotten it done and can do it in the future. a few problems. one, substantive. the math can work on a low flat tax rate system. >> maybe not 10%. but 20 or something like that. >> i would say even in the teens. you look at cruz and rand paul. they basically collect the revenue with essentially value-added tax on business. >> right. >> the point is it can be done. this is not an impossible idea to have a low flat tax rate system. the economics are flawed. more than that, it is a muddled message to the electorate saying i'm the conservative re formaler who got it done. he lays out the liberal positions and the voter is left to wonder what they are getting here. >> the other thing about kasich's broad side is it wasn't so

>> i like john kasich a lot. he's a friend of mine and he would be a good candidate, too, not as good as governor bush in my view, but i think there's a little bit of that. i think what happened on the republican side is trump jumped in, jumped to the top of the polls and froze the race. and after about four months of the race being frozen and nothing seemingly able to pull him down at all, the other candidates are all getting a little panicky and need to resist that. i think dr. carson's jump in the polls in the last week is more important than just ben carson. i think it amounts to unfreezing on the republican presidential side. and i would be more surprised if we didn't see more one movement and that's opportunity for candidates not to get frustrated with the process but to get into the process with their own vision. john kasich can do that very well. >> thank you so much. vin weber, we'll all be watching. and let's get a look at tonight's cnbc debate with one of the moderators, becky quick from cnbc. becky, i
