john kelly is as well.wering reports of his name calling with more name calling, calling it total bs. kaitlan collins is at the white house, she's no bs, what is happening there today? >> reporter: john kelly coming out quickly and publicly to deny this report, shortly after it was published. he issued a statement, we don't often hear from john kelly directly like this, but he did call this bs, he said that he spends more time with the president than anyone else and he said he always knows where i stand and he and i both know this story is total bs. john kelly said he's committed to the president and his agenda and the country and he said this is another pathetic attempt to smear the president. but he's not just denying it publicly, kate. we're also told he did so in a face to face meeting with president trump in the oval office yesterday, saying that this report isn't true and though cnn hasn't independently confirmed the idiot remark, we have reported that john kelly referred to the president as unhinged.

you know, john kelly, all of our reporting points to john kelly and president trump kind of growing veryhat, but you know, we wanted to look at nine months in, kelly was brought in as this disciplinarian who was going to bring order to where there was chaos and how did he wind up in this position where he's so weakened and you know, it turns out that over time he eroded morale inside the white house for a number of reasons. he was -- he has this public image of being this disciplinarian and people inside the white house say he's quite undisciplined inside the white house. he's undisciplined how he talks about the president and how he talks about women. staffers have said he will sometimes create problems instead of solving them so he's actually not, you know, doing the kinds of things that he said he would come in to do or that his public image says that he does which is -- and then people are -- have really grown -- it's worn thin on people inside the white house, this notion that he continually says that he's savoring the country. they're lucky to have him doing his work. there's a com

i think that john kelly, who has gotten very beaten up in press accounts recently is concerned about personal brand damage. >> it's interesting you say that, because when kelly came in and then intermittently during his tenure, i've heard from those in the service who have worked around him, and they keep pointing out to me, you know, generals are politicians. this is a man of decorated service, his family made the ultimate sacrifice to the cause of american freedom, he deserves his respect, his deference and his honor. but when you get to the level that he's at, they're politicians. they're worried about how they're perceived, they're worried about their own future. and that's something that kelly, i guess evidenced by this interview, has to balance. devotion to country, doing right by the president but i don't want him to drag me down with him and don't want to be seen as the same type of political animal. >> i think that's right. you have seen people over and over who have hitched themselves to president trump and ended up as road kill in terms of their personal reputation. i think
