orn lewis' -- john lewis' was the highlight of the day. roy wilkins who's the head of the naacp announced the news of w.e. duabuse's death in africa. remember this has been a long fight, he said. now, regardless of the fact that in his later year dr. dubois chose another path. it's convertible that at the dawn of the 20th century his was the voice to call you to gather today in this cause. there's a wave of applause that subsided into a referential silence. it's like moses said a woman. god had written that he should never enter the promised land. by the time that roy will kins finished his address the crowd was already tired for a long afternoon of speech-making. more marchers packed up toward the buses. several people left to go downtown in search of souvenirs. the crowd was dissolving when a. philip randolph introduced ms. mahalia jackson. at the mention of her name many in the jackson paused. she sang the two voices of a spiritual. then she closed her eyes for the third verse. i'm going to tell my lord when i get home. i'm going to tel

in 1965, when john lewis crossed the bridge in selma, alabama, seeking the right to vote for all americansthose same brother dollars were finding the john birch society opposition to the voting rights act. you know, we have a saying in the labor movement. which side are you on? well, too many who have the funds and the power to influence american leaders -- in fact, some of those leaders themselves have taken the wrong side in american history, the side of slavery, the side of segregation, the side of denying justice, the side of the economic dictatorship. in the decades since dr. king was taken from us, our nation has made enormous strides in the direction of racial justice. today, as we meet, barack obama is our president. and it is not just that barack obama is our nation's first african-american president. it is that his vision for our country owes so much of its moral power and its language to dr. king, but dr. king's vision was not simply an end to racism. he sought ending racism as a part of a larger struggle for human dignity, a larger struggle centered on economic justice. the tra

john lewis says yes. taylor branch has somebody else that says yes. and then he goes off into that prophecy, that musical moment it ended because there were two musical moments that and i have a dream and this may be a good place to add. remember the two most all moments that end i have a dream. the first is when that day comes, we all will thing my country to the d. with new meaning. it's a moment of nation building. for the first time because we can sing. black entered the white national anthem. but blacks crossing over into the way song is not the end. the slaves have the last word. and king makes, when that day, white children, black children, jews and gentiles will thing in the world of veal gentile. widespread into the voice of the black slaves. and in some sense, made white black and displays their granddaddies engram moms. so it is an important moment, a very black moment in style and in implication, even as he is doing one of the great moments of americans about religion. there is this other thing right in there, all mixed up and drenched in

is john lewis right, jared? >> i think he has a point and now i don't necessarily draw a line between that and riots in the street. the key point that he's making there is a very important one, and that's -- it's not just at recessionary point, matt. kni this is a point that holds over last business cycle of 2000. the economy expanded. productivity growth strong in the 2000s, but middle income families actually ended up a little bit behind in real term where is they started. poverty rates were higher at the end of that period than at the begin. that's the opposite of the way this was supposed to go. for a long time we knew inequality meant people weren't getting ahead as fast. the economy is doing fine except for all the people in it, and that's now become a tinned per box if it goes on too long. >> ravi, one of the things that fascinates me, class -- david cameron, born with a silver spoon chastising the parents of poor people being, their parenting skills being behind what's happening after having taken a brea

[applause] >> we just heard from john lewis, and reverend jackson is in the front row, and it is 2011, and we're talking about voter suppression. please, please. one more question about your experience out there. in addition to what is happening with collective bargaining rights, there have been substantial budget cuts in ohio. can you give us a real sense of how extensive they have been and how they have really affected the school system and other aspects of community life in ohio? >> we are really scrambling in ohio. in cleveland, 700 teachers were let go in the spring. just last week, three days before school, 200 teachers were let go. cleveland is looking at class sizes of 50 and above. that does not help our children. with the economic downturn in ohio and a lack of jobs, we have more and more children who are homeless, and that affects what they are able to do in school. day-by-day struggles are very tremendous for small children, and it is just amazing that we have had to create community learning centers for kids to go after school, because their parents are doing whatever the

america, not just black america. >> well, joining me now from that jobs fair live, congressman john lewis from georgia. congressman lewis, nice to see you. you know, it's important to point out that the black caucus is holding all these fairs in major cities around the u.s. essentially with the goal of finding work, finding work for 10,000 people. can we be specific though? what kinds of jobs are we talking about here, congressman? >> we're talking about jobs, jobs, jobs, hundreds and thousands of people have been standing here all day today, since early this morning, trying to get a job. people want to work. we had one company made a commitment of 60 jobs. we need more than 60. we need thousands of jobs. here in atlanta, for people to stand in a hot georgia sun all day in long lines is saying something about how desperate people are to work. people will take almost any job. >> certainly people are desperate. are we being more specific, talking manufacturing sector, health, education? what kind of jobs can you help offer up? >> well, we're trying to get jobs in all of these areas, health,
