john lewis is the author. we're updating that. because that bill was written before the supreme court, the impact of some of these recent decisions, so we're going to update that to incorporate these decisions and hopefully we will bring that back to work on. now, all we can say is these are good bills, they're bills designed to get people back involved in the process. i get very, very upset when i hear young people 25, and 30 years old, say to me, they see no reason to vote and it's not bringing up these recent laws that's been passed in various states, one being my own home state designed to suppress voting designed to not respect college students and where they live allowing them to vote at their campuses. not to let their student i.d.'s be used to demonstrate who they are. they can take that i.d., go into any bank in this country and get served get checks cashed but they're telling them that's not good enough to register to vote. these young people are very upset about those kinds of laws and this committee is going to work on

let me close with a story from john lewis, a congressman from georgia. how many of you have seen selma? the movie so far? okay. john lewis was beaten up in a civil rights movement more than any other single personal that's believed. john was in that movie a number of times. john was born in 1940. and then e let the record reflected to congress in the 1980s. he was the youngest person to speak at the 1963 march in washington. a number of people in history tells us other civil rights leaders told us to tone down his speech. he was speaking at a graduation i believe, at emery last spring. and he told this story about his childhood. he said i saw those signs that said white men, colored men white women, colored women. i'd come home and ask my father and my grand parents why is that? they would say john, that's the way it is. don't get in the way. don't get in trouble. in 1957, he wrote, i metro sa parks. those two individuals inspired me to get in the way to make trouble. so i encourage you, he told these graduates, to find a way to get in the way. find a wa

"selma." there are some questions surrounding the relationships between lyndon johnson and mlk. what was their relationship like around the time of selma? lbj was coming from your home state of texas. guest: i have great respect for lbj, just as i've respect for martin luther king. they could not have been done without both of them working together. both of them wanted to do it. i'm in congress now with the environment is well-known, that it takes both sides working together to get something done. these two people worked hand in hand. i do remember that lyndon johnson did not want the voting rights act and the civil rights act in the same bill. i'm very pleased about that because just knowing what i experience every day, if one goes down, then both will go down at the same time. one provided the roots for the other one. civil rights, then voting rights. both of those bills in both of those amendments cause me to be able to serve in congress for 12
