i agree with christina, i think it is imperative that congress pass not only hr-1 but also the john lewis voting rights act that myself and the leaders of other major legislative caucuses in the texas house have written to our congressional delegation, urging them to do everything they can to pass the john lewis voting rights act because getting a strong voting rights act is the only way to stop republican legislatures like in texas and other states from passing these voter suppression bills. but i will say with respect to the vote in texas in 2020, texas is increasingly becoming an electorate -- a very diverse electorate, reflecting our population. while donald trump did make some gains in the rio grande valley in south texas, the most populated areas of our state, harris county, dallas county, et cetera, still overwhelmingly in those communities of color and hispanic community and certainly in the african-american community voted overwhelmingly for joe biden and kamala harris and that's why republicans are bringing these bills, because they know they're going to lose these elections her

the john lewis voting rights act is essential. it would help to re -- restore some of the provisions, fundamentally of section five of the voting rights about that said -- that states -- these bills we are seeing across the country now. that they would have to submit those to the department of justice for clearance. and -- and they would have -- we would have to look to see if those voting rights -- voting provisions -- have the effect of denying the right to vote. or -- or prohibiting right to vote for people of color. and that is exactly what we are seeing going on across the country right now. >> let me finish with you, alana. very briefly before we have to pause. what did you make of the president's response to the question about whether america is a racist country. that feels like the, did you beat your wife of political questions right now? it feels like there is no-good way to answer that question, especially if you are trying to move forward racial-justice legislation. before we pause. >> i think he answered it well. i thi

we are in need of the john lewis voting rights bill. both of those must be passed.sident biden to intervene because what is happening right now is literally a war on democracy. >> it was quite a dress-down right there within the halls of the state capitol when that one legislature -- legislator did not know what purity of the ballot meant and yet it was there within the pages of the bill. some scary times right there. we talked about the administration and you see the dress down there that took place. we talk about the administration and what they need to do. what about corporations. you're there in dallas. american airlines is centered there. they put out a statement along with a number of different corporations, including hewlett-packard and warby parker, all based there in texas. it didn't really call for much. what more can corporations do? >> again, corporations need to be good neighbors. they need to be good corporate citizens and recognize that democracy is good for business. and voter suppression is bad for business. and so we are asking for not only america
