joining me now is john nichols, my colleague at "the nation" magazine, where he and his washington correspondent. john, there is this strange, weird equilibrium we've arrived at, where republicans are impotent to enact their agenda. they've gotten some of the austerity they wanted, the one thing they have the power to do is basically screwing over constituencies that don't have a lot of political power. >> it's absolutely true, chris. and it's a particularly dekeynesian moment we're in. the notion that coming into the christmas holiday, you would fight to your last breath to prevent an extension of unemployment benefits. the metaphor is to powerful, but it goes way beyond that. we talk about 1.3 million, and i suppose for some people, that doesn't sound like a lot of folks, but what you need to understand, those 1.3 million folks who are getting the unemployment benefits when are people who were employed. they tend to have a family. they've got people who need support. so you extend those numbers out, then you talk about the food stamps. chris, on the food stamps, we're talking, over the next de

. >> joining me now, john nichols, washington correspondent. l look thing word up, mistypified. what is that? >> i'm a seventh generation person from wisconsin and i've never heard it. new to me, as well. >> new one in the senate, i guess. is this a reversal by the senator from wisconsin who has been so hard on the president when it comes to health care reform? >> absolutely. this is a guy who was elected, literally created politically as a militant foe of the accordable care act. he beat russ feingold in 2010 focusing intensely on this issue. he's been on radio, on television, on the floor of the senate, virtually every day since his election, talking down the accordable care act. talking about it as a horrible thing. then suddenly he gets in a room with some conservative folks up in new york and says maybe we can use parts of it. >> that's the key word. he told the national review online, the state exchange is useful. now, that's like saying obama care is useful, which flies in the face of everything he's said everywhere. >> exactly right, ed.

. >> when we come back we'll talk with john nichols from at i nation" and you're watching "inside story." >> welcome back to "inside story," i'm ray suarez. joining our conversation now from madison, wisconsin, joni coles, washington correspondent for the nation.magazine. we were talking about the behavior of the united states senate, and talked about almost an identify switch between incouragible house and. >> i and i respect what he has to say. what i will tell you is that the budget deal that's come through, and all of the fights that are going on have really been reflections of a big change in general. money has been given to both chambers, in addition we have a 24-7 news cycle. and so little fights that in the past might have been significant now become amplified in a fundraising standpoint. that becomes tough. to me the most disappointing thing in the current moment is that the suggestion that the ultimate goal should be corporation, and it does trouble me that we sometimes measure success or failure by whether these folks aren't fighting with one another rather than stepping back

john nichols, washington correspondent for "the nation." thanks to you both for joining me. >> thank you. >> good to be here. >> kate, i want to start with you. one of the things that's interesting about how this vote is going to go down in the senate is when you look at the gop senators who are facing primaries in 2014, particularly the tea party challengers, they seem to be not in favor. they made a point of coming out early and often to express their displeasure. >> right. exactly. and so what these tea party challengers are doing are pushing these senators who might otherwise agree for a bipartisan compromise to the right. i still think it will pass. i actually even think some of the senators might vote for -- a simple majority could get the budget passed. >> you know, john, what this bodes in terms of the future is we will likely see a lot of this while these guys are in this primary situation where they might normally have either voted for something or been willing to make a deal on something, they'll instead sort of be naysayers, if

for more, let's bring in john nichols, washington correspondent of the "nation" magazine. actually, we'll go one state over to wisconsin in madison tonight. john, good to have you with us. you know, i think this is very impactful. we've never seen this before in 130 cities. what impact do you think these protests are going to have, if any? >> i think it's huge. and it's very, very significant that this is the second year that we have seen this sort of protest, an organized, national effort to bring people out from behind the counters at fast food restaurants, put them with their allies and supporters on the streets of communities across this city. i was in some of the places where these protests took place. and there was nobody going by booing them. the horns were honking, you saw the thumbs up. people were cheering these workers on. and that fits with what the polls tell us, ed. polling says that 80% of americans believe that congress should raise the minimum wage above $10 an hour. so there's real passion there in this country. and i think we're beginning to raise that en
