as ktvu's john sasaki reports, city leaders and police are joining residents in their frustration. >>eporter: the signs after sideshow are obvious at the corner of foothill and mcarthur in east oakland. >> we can hear it, smell the burnt rubber. >> reporter: just a block away on sunday afternoon, residents had enough. >> we don't have the protection that our property tax pay for. >> reporter: dangerous side shows are common in many oakland neighborhood. residents say on sunday they called police repeatedly but that officers took too long getting here. so 69-year-old jack morton took matters into his own hands. armed with this baby bat, he told the drivers to leave. >> in one sense i don't care what happens to me or them. it's got to stop. >> reporter: that didn't go well. numerous sideshow participants attacked him. >> i got a number of bruises and scrapes and the beating in the head. they hit me in the head. >> reporter: a neighbor helped rescue him and firefighters rushed morton to the hospital. >> they really rolled him in a sense. gashes in his scalp, he now has staples and stitch

. >> now let's go up to john sasaki who is in solano county where the winds are fueling the wild fire. what are crews telling you now? >> reporter: firefighters are still on scene trying to get a full handle on this. still trying to contain it. i want to show you a herd of cattle that was saved by the firefighters on scene and the crews still here. they are still looking for hot spots trying to get all the spots under control. just over here to the left, a home that was also spared. you can see still a lot of smoke in the background because it is very smoky. people including some school kids in grizzly island and rush ranch were evacuated. around the same time, the situation was very scary for ranchers near here. you can see flames coming very close to the property and spooking the livestock. the ranchers were trying to herd the animals out of harm's way and out of the barn. in a few minutes afterwards, the barn was engulfed in flames. what had fire officials concerned was the wither. >> temperatures are not bad. we are probably in the single digits at this point. strong winds. 40 mil

john sasaki is there now with late information on the fire fight. john?r: frank, you can see some 1,000 acres are flattened. the fire continues to smolderer now. the most dramatic moment came when the fire was still completely out of control. you can still flames coming very close to a ranch and spooking livestock. a short time after that, the building was fully engulfed after they get the animals out. this fire caused evacuations and left people operating a duck hunting club worried for their neighbors. >> i knew it was close to my place so i wanted to make sure it is okay. we dodged a bullet and i want to know how my neighbors are doing. >> we have evacuated grizzly island. the children have been evacuated from the rush ranch and we are limiting access to grizzly island. >> reporter: fire officials tell me just two people suffered injuries, minor smoke inhalation at an explosives facility nearby. more than 100 firefighters are on the scene using one air attack plane and one chopper. the fire was 65% contained by 4:00 and they expect to fully contain it
