people are trying to back their heads around it. jonathan: what is your impression of things?ards the dovish end of the spectrum? lisa: there is a deep fear that you do see delinquencies going up as much as they are. you had incredible games for low income workers. there is a big fear that the longer they keep the rates high, they could lose gains in that could be a problem. a different kind of policy in its totality. it becomes a tricky dance, but i think the fed officials are working with this uncomfortable feeling of an uneven recovery. jonathan: a big trip for chinese president xi jinping. he is seeking to stabilize china's relationship with your. -- with europe. a visit from micron talking about having a different perspective on these issues. having our own perspective in europe and not just following whatever biden says. lisa: how much is pressure in the euro region that they want to get inflation under control? it is no longer a gift of lower prices. we have seen this motley approach in europe. each has its own approach. we hear from a lot of people. jonathan: there are

and jonathan i forgot to mention the other report that came out this week more bad news for biden on the economy is consumer confidence but how americans feel about where the economy is headedat dropped again. it looks like a biden is facing real headwinds on the economy right now. jonathan: and steve, that consumer confidence report plays directly into a fox news poll that was conducted a couple of weeks ago. comparing voters of thoughts on whether they trust president biden or former president trump more on the economy. think we can put the pool up. it's really again not good news for president bided. he seems to be underwater in those numbers as wellin terms of who the voters trust more to do a decent job on the economy. >> there's a good reason for that. if you look at the major statistics we have a study coming out showing if you look at the 15 major indices of the economy performance trump versus a biden wins 12 out of 15 of those. one of them is obviously much better job. remember when trump left office the inflation it is my 1.6%. biden and 18 months took it to 9.1%. if you look at the current trends we are so only 4% range. one of the reasons wall street is nervous

jonathan: i might need to put -- jack: i might need to pause before heading out of the cave.y. lisa: it's ok. what about the retailers portraying a weakening discretionary consumer but one that hasn't run out of spending power? jack: let's go back to parsing the difference between discretionary and staples. to some extent, the high-end is doing well. the market is at all-time highs. it easier to go purchase expensive skincare products. it gets harder. bloomingdale's is doing well. your middle-market consumer has been using tax increases on a weekly basis at the gas pump. gasoline is moving higher. you are going into driving season. maybe at the margin with this drumbeat of weaker consumer confidence, maybe it's harder to end the extra dollar. so retailers have been working their way through a lot of inventory and arst air they will get caught holding the bag again. annmarie: are the commodities a bit of a reason why you are pausing before coming out of the cave? claudia: fuel -- jack: fuel survey out there. to the we rely on truck companies product, what does the week this su

jonathan. you heard that. we weren't expecting garland to come out headed to an f.b.i. memorial.re is jack smith's case now? >> well, right now it's dead in the water and the question is what the supreme court will do on the immunity question. if the court sends that back and says, you know, we think there is a more nuanced approach here. we don't like the extreme interpretations by either the trump team or lower court, that will require findings of fact. that will require time, and i can't imagine how they could possibly get the trial before the election. but it's really amazing to see the loaded questions from some of the -- for the attorney general what does it say about the justice system suggesting it is going too slowly. jack smith is the one who has been saying that trump should not be entitled to what most defendants are entitled to, things like in bank reviews and cutting short the appellate process and speeding through these cases. it is really jack smith that is asking for exceptions to the standard procedures and scheduling of cases. >> dana: the press did not ask abo

jonathan: maybe q1, the strength might have been a head fake, would you go with that?> there is the potential for some residual seasonality where you saw such strength at various points in the year that the seasonals are not fully accounting for the typical early your strength. they still do anticipate more strength in the early part so there is still some signal in the firmer readings as possible it's catching up for the second half of last year which was a bit of a head fake in itself. we are still looking at overall core inflation will be 3.6 even with some downshift in april. dani: it seems like every piece of data is a head fake. is this really the trend or not the trend? that's not how the economy works. with each piece of data coming in, can you get a clear read? can you have conviction in your calls now? >> the second-quarter numbers will be important because q1 was messy whether it's inflation or maybe payrolls. q2 will be important for how much of that was noise or a signal but it makes it difficult to really have a lot of conviction in terms of what's not ne
