i'm sam stein in for jonathan lemire. twice-impeached former president who is currently under investigation for trying to overturn the 2020 election, and who inspired insurrection at the capitol, announced last night that he is running for president again. in the hour-long speech, donald trump rehashed old conspiracies. he exaggerated his record, railed against president biden and the so-called radical left. he claimed to be a victim of a rogue justice department despite having many of his hand-picked candidates rejected by voters a week ago, he declared a comeback. >> much criticism is being placed on the fact that the republican party should have done better. and frankly, much of this blame is correct. but the citizens of our country have not yet realized the full extent and gravity of the pain our nation is going through. and the total effect of the suffering is just starting to take hold. they don't quite feel it yet. but they will very soon. >> we will do whatever it takes to bring back honesty, confidence and trust

i'm jonathan lemire.nks for starting your day with us. we'll begin with a federal jury reaching a verdict in the high-profile oath keepers trial. oath keepers founder stewart rhodes, and the leader of the florida chapter of the far-right group kelly meggs were both found guilty yesterday, of seditious conspiracy in connection with the january 6, 2021 attack on the u.s. capitol. the seditious conspiracy charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. rhodes' attorney said they plan to appeal the conviction. this is the most serious case to grow outside of the department's sprawling investigation into the capitol insurrection. the trial lasted with the jury three days. three other members of the group were found not guilt, they include jessica watkins, kenneth harrison and thomas caldwell. all were found guilty of obstruction of a criminal proceeding as well as aiding and abetting their actions on january 6th. a sentencing date has not yet been set. let's get right to it. and joining us right now i

i'm jonathan lemire. thanks for being here. brazil's outgoing president jair bolsonaro will apparently not challenge his runoff election loss to lula dasilva. speaking for the spirit yesterday since his loss, bolsonaro thanks his supporters but did not technically concede. it was only later in the day that his chief of staff clarified the situation and announced the start of a transition of power. lula defeated bolsonaro by less than two points on sunday, by way of a runoff election after neither candidate was able to secure a majority of the votes in the first round early last month. it's unclear how bolsonaro's supporters might handle the news including the truckers who have shut down some of brazil's most trafficked highways in protest since sunday's result. brazil's government said as of last night, protesters were blocking highways partially or fully in about 190 locations although that number has started to decrease since sunday. >>> let's turn to ukraine now, where russia has stepped up its efforts this week to push out

i'm jonathan lemire. thanks for starting your day with us.re going to begin with yet another mass shooting in the united states of america. shots rang out just after 10:00 last night at a walmart in the city of chesapeake, virginia, located in the southeast cone of the state, just outside of norfolk. police confirmed within the last hour that seven people are dead, including the gunman. it's unclear at this moment if the gunman took his own life, or if he was killed by responding officers. police say victims are being treated at multiple hospitals in the area. a spokesperson for the area's top trauma center told local reporters that five patients were being treated there. the fbi was on the scene last night, and the atf from washington tweeted just after midnight that its agents are also assisting in the investigation. we will bring with you any developments of this story as the morning continues. >>> meanwhile, the accused colorado springs nightclub shooter will be in court today. the 22-year-old is facing five counts of first degree murder

i'm jonathan lemire. >> the colorado springs community is grieving this morning following a deadly mass shooting at an lgbtq nightclub. five people were killed and 25 others hurt after a man wearing body armor armed with an ar-15 and a handgun opened fire inside club q just before midnight on saturday. one person who survived the shooting told "the new york times" he thought the gun shots were part of the music. but then he saw the muzzle of a gun and ran. police say the tragedy could have been much worse if not for the brave actions of two people. >> while the suspect was inside of the club at least two heroic people inside the club confronted and fought with the suspect and were able to stop the suspect from continuing to kill and harm others. we owe them a great debt of thanks. >> police identified the gunman as 22-year-old anderson lee aldridge but have not determined his motive. a man with a same name and age as the club shooting suspect was arrested in june of last year after the man's mother called police to report that he had threatened her with a bomb and other weapons. he surr
