i think that joni ernst is a preview of coming attractions. you'll see more and more republicans taking her posture. and, over time, as trump's failures mount up and his successes diminish, they are going to create more and more distance from him. i saw tom cotton with that town hall, and he looked silly trying to defend what he knew was indefensible. so republicans are in a box. they're also going to find out that it's going to be in their self-interest to distance themselves from him. he's an unprecedentedly unpopular interest. we've got these town halls where the crowds are really juiced up and jacked up against the republicans. you've got this race in the georgia sixth a couple of weeks ago with mike poeo's seat in kansas, much closer than it should have been this is an administration that is in trouble and the republican party is in trouble. i think the important thing to bear in mind is this is in trouble in the first 90 days of his presidency. this is supposed to be the apex of popularity. so this is -- this is a lot of trouble early on

i think what you showed from joni ernst actually at that town hall is one of the more interesting things i have seen out of a congressional republican so prominent as ernst. it kind of gives you a sense that there is the potential for republicans to turn on donald trump if they don't think that he is going to get them reelected. and i think increasingly, the more that, you know, he makes decisions that to them feel erratic, one top republican once said to me we feel a little responsibility to be the ballast in the ship of state. if voters start to feel like the ship -- that ship of state is falling completely off course, i think you're going to see republican members of congress respond. and i think that's actually what you're going to talk about the broader implications of what's happening here. i think you start to buildup these collective signs of these different what happened here, what happened in kansas. you're going to get a lot of nervous republicans in congress that could actually affect how trump is able to govern. >> brian, you have to look at the republican field here in the

had two republican senators in this past week, joni ernst. these are sort of gentle criticisms. senator from iowa came out and said the president needs to spend less time at his mar-a-lago resort and more time at the white house and you had a few other republicans saying the president needs to release his tax returns. is this the kind of typical intra-party split or what? >> no, i think it means something. every republican candidate has the make a trump calibration to determine what percentage they support the president, what they don't, depending on their districts. right now there is a huge difference between a president at 60%, a president in the low 40s. people feel like they don't need to explain things for him that are difficult to explain. you watch some members, like tom cotton, a senator i really like, a sharp guy, trying to defend why the president won't release his tax returns and looks foolish in the process. >> right. so some of the cost, the intimidation factor has been reduced because of the president's standing and some people are just not going to put up with ex
