and when you look at the fact that we're just dealing with no conviction in the murder counts on jordan davisg where he died. a 17-year-old kid, trayvon martin, 17-year-old kid died, no conviction. and this young lady convicted, sentenced to 20 years. the court of appeals said the judge didn't charge the jury right. now she is going to be retried facing 60 years. the contrast couldn't be more striking and shocking. >> well, that's right. and as you point out, the most important factor in this case is that nobody, thank goodness, was harmed. neither her husband, neither her husband's children, or anybody else. it was simply the wall that was harmed. the wall that the bullet went into. now, i'm not a fan of people firing off guns in the middle of altercations. but this was self-defense, that is a complete defense. and she makes a pretty good story for self-defense. but if the jury says otherwise, so be it. 20 years behind bars that she points out, effectively a life sentence if it goes up to 60 years, when no one was harmed, and there is no question that her husband has a history of abuse again

why is it more than just trayvon martin or jordan davis or renisha mcbride? big factors that i talk about in the second half of the book. probably the biggest is racial bias in america. most of us don't want to think we're racist. everybody says their color blind. but we continue to have these outcomes. what's going on? at the root of it is implicit racial bias. it's a free test developed by harvard researchers. a lot of us may be shocked at what you discover when you take that test. >> i've taken it. and i was also surprised. >> about 50% of african-americans test for racial bias against african-americans. about 80% of whites do. so it's very disturbing when you find that out about yourself. the good news is that you can change it. there is hope. and i have a lot of examples in the book about doctors, police, judges and juries who can make changes once they're aware of these biases. >> you also talk about the gun culture that exists in this country and how there is almost one gun per american. and you note the fact that we have the highest rate of gun deaths

report that couldn't be more timely coming in the wake of stories involving trayvon martin and jordan davisn it comes to race, we are reminded all too frequently that it's an area where we will still need lots of work. a new report published in the journal of personality and social psychology and called "the essence of innocence, consequences of dehumanizing black children" reminded me of this very fact. last year i wrote about the hate generated simply by my writing about trayvon martin. at that time, the hateful rhetoric that trayvon martin was a thug who deserved to die was as strong as ever. some readers took issue with the photo of trayvon martin that i used, especially the one that showed him to be young and fresh faced, the one you're looking at now. which he was. one reader went so far as to chide me for not using what he said was the up-to-date picture of trayvon martin. the only problem, this is not trayvon martin. this is 34-year-old hip-hop artist and actor the game. not only had trayvon martin just turned 17 when he was shot and killed, the only tattoos on his body as revealed

one of my big criticisms in this case and the jordan davis case, was the prosecutor's absolute fear abouty people stirred up in the case. inside the courtroom, it's a nonissue because they're aphrased to raise it. it turns out while many of us are uncomfortable talking about race, it can be done. of i talk about the differences. in doctor's offices, doctors spent twice as much time were with white patients as bad patients. when they're advised of that problem, many doctors change their behaviors. >> that's something in psychology they call attitude inoculation. the idea of actually learning about a problem in your mind will make you less likely to have that problem. i want to put up on the screen a problem that a lot of its have, which is we fear the wrong things. you document in the book, people are afraid of crime and some people are afraid specifically of the criminal danger afraid to beat. you list the leading causes of death. heart disease, cancer, liver disease, stroke, diabetes, you go down that list, we couldn't get to violent crime. >> right. >> you write in your book, near the e
