here's nbc's damian trujillo in downtown san jose. pearsall instead of sitting in class today, nico and emiliano are watching the movie mcfarland. it's the story of student athletes from immigrant families in the central valley. the sixth graders stayed home from school in the alum rock school district. but this isn't about playing hooky, nico says. the images of vice enforcement have been bothering him. i feel sad because they're getting separated from their families. the middle schoolers say this is their form of protest. i'm protesting that about all the deportations that have been happening. and it's not fair because all the immigrants here are helping the community. the alum rock school district says it's seen a steep 12% drop in attendance since the ice enforcement actions began in san jose. today, 2874 students were out, 363% increase from the average day this year. the franklin-mckinley district next door says it had a whopping 1611 students stay home today, more than 300% above normal. nico and emiliano parents say they took
