after doing about ten years of ethnographic work, i realized oh, so is josephine in detroit. and when michelle's book is so powerful is because she gets that and directs the readers to understand our national predicament that way for me, what makes this book exceptional is that michelle, doug, doug and doug and at times it kind of almost feels like she was digging, so to speak, her bare hands. but orients the reader to understand a town from the heart. she curates it. facts to tell the story from a residents perspective. she knows this book isn't about her she gets out of the way. i've really an interesting part of this conversation, but i was trained sociologists, anthropologists and the one kind of thing really highlighted for me was that there is a tendency, unfortunate tendency within sociology and anthropology specifically ethnography where people kind of just show up into communities, kind of gawk at people's problems, write about it and come back this really beautiful, wonderful sociology doctor v cook a real set ucsb kind of tells us as being like the jungle book narr
