if you could stand by, everyone, i want to bring in josh dawsey who shares a byline on the "washington post" article. josh, who can you tell us about these documents related to nuclear weapons that you and your colleagues report were being sought by fbi agents at mar-a-lago? >> what we've learned is that the federal government and fbi were working with subpoenas and working cooperatively with the trump folks and at some point this summer they decided to do a more aggressive take because of what was there. documents about nuclear programs. multiple sources said that escalated their desire they believed those documents were there to get it immediately. it's one of the things our sources have explained to us why such a step was taken like it was on monday. >> is there any reason according to your sources that a former president would have these particular kinds of documents in his possession and not have turned them over in the initial cache of documents that were turned over? >> not that i'm aware of, anderson, no. former presidents often take things with them that they return back in ti

let's bring in barbara mcquade and josh dawsey from the "washington post.", let me ask you about this letter from the judge back to the trump legal team. what should we read into that beyond her saying your work isn't finished here, explain why you want me to look at this and perhaps find a special master? >> in the politest terms, she's asking some questions that really are raised by the filing itself. it's very unclear what they're even asking for. it's unclear why they filed it with her. perhaps there was some thought that since she was a trump appointee, she would make a ruling that's favorable to him. sometimes that's referred to as judge shopping. she's giving him every opportunity, really bending over backwards as a courtesy to give him an opportunity to answer those questions. but i think in the end, this is a matter properly before the magistrate judge. a request for a special master is not unheard of, although in this case it seems that with the passage of two weeks the governments will have already reviewed these documents. so ultimately it will b

i'm joined now by one of the reporters that broke the story, josh dawsey, for the washington post. josh, what more can you tell us? >> what we know is that when the fbi went on monday, it would be for a number of things but one of the things they were concerned about is documents about nuclear weapons. the highly classified documents. they believe the former president had them in possession or at his house. they believe that they were there. and that is one of the reasons the search happened, according to our sources. and that also could help explain, according to our sources, the escalation of why they took such a large team into his property, and why there seemed to be growing urgency in the investigation. >> your sense of whether or not these documents were the main thrust of the investigation, or just some of the many documents the fbi was seeking. >> we know it's a significant part. i don't want to say more than we know at this point, because we are still doing reporting, and we're figuring out, we're hoping to figure out more and more at least. but we know it's a seven affecte

josh dawsey headlined archives asked for records in 2021 after trump lawyer agreed they should be returnedyou just walk us through your reporting. you reviewed a may email from trump lawyers to national archives. what the takeaway? >> the takeaway, anderson, is in may 2021, the top lawyer for the national archives reached out to three different lawyers for trump, and here's what he said. he said that in the final days of a trump white house, they had identified two dozen boxes of presidential material that had been in the residence, in the white house residence, not in the oval office but in the residence, and that pat cipollone, according to the archives lawyer, pat cipollone, the white house lawyer, wanted the material returned. they had asked repeatedly for the material to be returned and it had not been returned. and they were asking again in may 2021 to please return the material. in fact, they were almost begging. and they said besides the boxes, they had noticed several other high pro-file items that had not been termed. president trump's correspondence with kim jong-un. his corresp

josh dawsey, i know you are in touch with folks in donald trump's world. any reaction from them so far? >> i do know there's been a change in the opinion of some of the trump advisers i've spoken to this week. the initial observations seemed to be they thought this was an overreach by the department of justice, and they thought that it would actually play to his favor to some degree. but there seems to be over the last couple of days a realization that they may not have known other things he took and he may have taken some things that could be problematic. i mean, you have maggie haberman reported this earlier, and this is true, you have some folks that are around the former president telling gop leaders, you know, kind of dial back with stuff on the fbi and the doj, you know, we -- this sko get rockier in the coming days. there certainly seems to have been a sea change in the past couple of days in trump world. one of the things, katy, is a lot of the folks around the former president don't really know what was in those boxes. there are some aides who do.
