josh einiger in court tonight for us. he's in downtown brooklyn. >> reporter: the point of an arraignment is solely to set bail. it's not to argue the facts. but that didn't stop defense attorneys for four of the five teenage defendants from doing everything they could to discredit the prosecution's case. they're 14, 15, and 17 years old. five high school students accused in the crime that horrified the city, the alleged gang rape of an 18- year-old woman. she told eyewitness news she >> everything she told us and the father told us, the video that we got that next morning and that next afternoon bolstered that side of the story. >> reporter: cops didn't release that video but as they hunted for the suspects they released this, showing the teens in a nearby grocery store before allegedly pulling a gun on the father and ordering him to leave after which they addly took turns raping the victim. >> prosecutors admit none of the suspects was picked out of a lineup or photo array. then there's cell phone video attorney kenneth

eyewitness news reporter josh einiger breaking the news on twitter. he's in queens outside the police precinct. >> talk about a snow job. sanitation worker had detectives searching all day for a pair of armed assailants but in the end determined he made the whole thing up. 30-year-old michael morel has been on the job with sanitation just four months. he told police he'd been jumped by two men, at least one of whom had a shuffled snow around 4:00 this morning. even claimed he'd been pistol whipped. this as strongest have been working around the clock digging the city out of last weekend's record snowstorm. investigators say he did in fact have some sort of altercation. he was actually injured after that altercation but he claimed that he had been robbed for $25 while he was in uniform and on duty for the sanitation department. back here live at the 103 precinct station house where members of the squad worked all day on this case and eventually this story here unraveled. morelli has been charged with one count of filing a false report. it's not clear w

josh einiger in fresh meadows tonight. any better conditions out there tonight? >> i guess it depends on your point of view. here in fresh meadows i'm on a small street beside a cemetery. they've got these giant dump trucks filled with snow they're pulling out of these neighborhoods. they're then creating this mountain here and then starting we're told possibly as early as tomorrow they're going to take all that snow and put it in this machine which will melt it and turn it in to pure water and melt it all away. that is progress to be sure, but to a lot of people in a lot of these neighborhoods, it just barely scratches the surface. department is almost 1,000 plows in queens alone. that's nearly half the city's fleet but this truck was no match for this section. on 75th street, a car parked right in the way. still people here blame the city. >> they haven't partly -- they haven't plowed the streets in two days. >> we should get a little bit of representation. >> reporter: here on 75th the crowd gathered for nearly two hours as workers managed to get that truck ba

. >> eyewitness news reporter josh einiger on the scene with the breaking news. >> we're on bruckner boulevard this van all over the roadway and the damage, the van jumped the curb and slammed in to the side of the storage facility, a place called storage post. we'll show you video right now as investigators were on the scene and trying to figure out what exactly went wrong here. eyewitness news has learned this was an accident involving two vehicles. one of those the van jumped the curb and slammed in to the side of the building. as many as eight people taken to area hospitals. we're told their injuries are not life-threatening. very, very fortunate indeed. coming back to a live picture right now, you can see this heavy, heavy damage on the side of the building. it's not yet been boarded up at this point and it's very clear there's some pretty serious structural problems here on the side and inside this building. the good news, nobody seriously injured in this case and this accident at this point is under investigation. we're live for now in the mott haven section of the bronx, josh

we're live tonight in the bay chester section of the bronx, josh einiger, channel 7 eyewitness news. >>> we have breaking news to tell you about in new jersey. four people rushed to the hospital tonight after a high carbon monoxide reading in their home. this happened in union city in hudson county. lucy yang is at the scene with the latest. >> two police officers and four members of one family were rushed to the hospital and treated for carbon monoxide poisoning tonight. we're told two of the family members are lucky to be alive. we're on palisade avenue here in union city. 911 was called this family came home and found two other members unconscious. turns out there was a massively elevated level of carbon monoxide in the house, enough to kill. we're told the reading was 1,000 parts per million which is dangerously high. >> anything over 80 parts per million, you're in bad shape so if their family members didn't come home, they wouldn't have survived much longer. >> the battalion chief believes the cause was due to the furnace and cautions residents to have their furnaces checked. c
