there were nine members really led by josh gottheimer of northern new jersey who did not want to vote that initially without doing infrastructure first. the reason that there were promises that infrastructure would get a vote by september 22 or 27. but the idea is to try and get the social spending and tax bill done first. really that is what puts them on a fast schedule. if they wait too long there will be a lot of frustration on both wings. tom: let us -- jonathan: let us build on the question, do they risk losing their majority because of the things that they do, or the things they will not do? jack: probably both. if you do too much you will take criticism. you do to little you will take criticism, especially establishing a child tax credit that then could expire, not acting to extend that would hurt democrats, i am sure. but the idea of a bill that actually totals $3.5 trillion in the tax increases that they are talking about, that might weigh on them. the first midterm after the presidential election is a tough one. part of the motivation is what is get the things done that we a

congressman josh gottheimer opened the door to a vote not necessarily monday but later on this week. so you kind of see the stars aligning there. the big issue here is that progressives have to feel comfortable with where that larger multitrillion dollar package is before they agree to vote on the infrastructure bill. they're worried that if the infrastructure bill is passed, the centrist democrats will then have no use for the reconciliation bill and it could all fall apart. at the end of the day there will be very intense negotiations in the coming days to get democrats to agree on this and that $3.5 trillion price tag is likely to come down. let's have a listen to what speaker pelosi had to say about that. >> obviously with negotiations, there will have to be some changes in that, the sooner, the better, so that we can build our consensus to go forward. and we will do that. >> but it sounds like you acknowledge that the final number is going to be somewhat smaller than that. >> yeah, i mean, that seems self-evident. everybody overwhelmingly, and i think even those who want a small

governor, you mentioned that you're hoping for relief that's certainly what we've heard from josh gottheimer't happen, though, if there's not salt relief, what do we do next? and i guess what we've seen so far with your plan has been to take and offer some middle class relief by raising taxes on anybody earning over a million dollars in the state of new jersey if the salt relief doesn't come or is only extended to middle class, what will you do in terms of the highest earne ers in the state? do you worry any of them leave because of those higher taxes? >> yeah, we don't have any plan to raise more taxes on anybody in fact, we're going the other direction. if you're a middle class family today compared to what we got in the office three and a half years ago, you're paying less for a lot of stuff, probably on your income taxes, to go to college, to pay for health care, to pay for child cay that's the direction we've been going in and we want to stay going in that direction. if the salt cap doesn't get lifted, it is a fact that that's a problem. that's a real problem for middle class homeowners

the white house, senate democratic leader schumer, and various members of the democratic caucus josh gottheimerhappen he said, we're going to get it done so, there seems to be an incentive for both sides, both progressives and moderates, to pass both pieces of legislation, but the problem is how do they get there and it seems like there's not -- the lack of trust is, of course, between moderates and progressives, but it's mostly between the house and the senate, and that's where senator joe manchin and kyrsten sinema come in because house progressives, they don't just want a commitment from their house moderates, their colleagues in the house. they need a commitment from people like senator manchin and kyrsten sinema and something that they haven't been able to get yet pramila, leader of the progressive caucus, just spoke with some reporters a few seconds ago and she said she spoke with senator sinema today but she has not yet spoken with senator manchin, a key person. and so, i spoke with senator manchin earlier today. there's all these conversations that are happening, but i asked him if he w
