nbc's josh lederman is in nantucket, mass, where president biden is spending the holiday weekend. afternoon, thanks for joining us on this. talk us through the logistics of this move by the administration. why the timing of it, monday, and do we know how long these bans could actually be in place? >> reporter: not until monday, yasmin, because the biden administration wanted to make sure they didn't leave people stranded who are already en route, wanted to make sure they didn't create mayhem at the airport. and so, they are using this weekend to coordinate with tsa officials, with airline officials as well as local officials from various countries who are affected by this travel ban. we don't know how long it will be in place, but we do know that it will not affect u.s. citizens as well as permanent residents who might be in one of those eight countries trying to get back to the united states. they will still be able to enter the united states as long as they have a negative covid-19 test. president joe biden, on his final full day of his vacation here in nantucket, was briefed onc

. >>> joining us now from scotland, nbc news correspondent josh lederman. josh, good morning.come to scotland. the aides i've talked to over the weekend say they've pulled off largely what they wanted to do in rome. but what's coming is the centerpiece of this foreign trip. set the stage for us. >> reporter: well, you're exactly right, jon. the white house feels pretty solid about what took place in rome. they feel good about what they were able to do on climate, ending overseas coal financing. they feel very optimistic. they were able to clinch on a global minimum tax. and the meeting with the president and pope got a lot of eyeballs, showing the president in a positive way. on the other hand, everyone in europe has got one eye back on washington. it's not lost on anyone in scotland or rome, for that matter, that there's so much unsettled business in washington when it comes to president biden being able to deliver on all of the commitments he's made. on the one hand you've got bide and other world leaders chiding russia and china for not showing up to these summits, not show

let's get right to nbc's josh lederman in nantucket where the president is for the holiday. have msnbc medical contributor dr. vin gupta. also the host of npr's "full disclosure," robin farzad. josh, i asked you in the last hour whether the president would move to strict travel and you said you hadn't heard anything. sounds like he was listening. >> reporter: that's right, katy. the white house wanted to wait until the variant was designated of concern by the w.h.o. and that's now occurred. the white house is acting on the advice of the president's chief medical adviser dr. anthony fauci as well as the cdc in now putting into place these restrictions which will occur beginning on monday. in addition to south africa, there will be seven other countries that are subject to these new travel restrictions. i'll read them you to. it's botswana, zimbabwe, mows a.m. mozambique, and malawi, as scientists try to learn more about this covid-19 variant circulating in southern africa. now that it's been labeled a variant of concern, they feel comfortable taking this step. this policy will

let's go to nbc's josh lederman with the president in nantucket, massachusetts, on this holiday weekending about the president who i understand has just been briefed on this? >> reporter: that's right. we heard from the white house that president joe biden once again today was briefed on the latest developments on the omicron variant. president biden on his last full day of vacation here in nantucket. a white house official also saying within the last hour that officials at the white house remain in constant contact with public health authorities, with officials in other countries who are closely tracking this variant. but the biggest move we've seen so far from the biden administration in response to the variant is this travel ban now set to take effect on monday for eight nations in the southern part of africa, including south africa. that will affect non-u.s. citizens, citizens of the country as well as permanent residents will be exempt from that, although they still will have to get a covid-19 test to enter the u.s. the biden administration describing this move as out of an abundan

josh lederman is at nantucket where the president just departed. and busy agenda for the president this week. what all is on it, josh? >> reporter: alex, president biden would like to be focusing squarely on that legislative agenda, particularly getting his massive spending bill through congress before the end of the year. but facts are facts. and at this point in time, the omicron variant has really thrown a wrench into the president's plans for the next several days. it was the only thing that really took the president out of his thanksgiving holiday plans with his family over the last few days. he had about a half hour briefing with dr. fauci during which he decided to put in those travel restrictions and just as president biden in the last hour was leaving nantucket, heading back to the white house, we learned from a white house official that when he gets back, president biden will have an in-person briefing with members of the his covid-19 response team as well as with his chief medical adviser, dr. anthony fauci. the white house saying that m

all right, joining us now nbc's raf sanchez, and josh lederman is joining us from nantucket. you're there in israel where a strain of the omicron variant has already been detected and we just learned in the last few hours another new country finding a variant present there. what all do we know about it? >> reporter: the british government now confirming two cases of omicron have been found in the uk. prime minister boris johnson is going to address his nation about that development in the next hour. the -- this variant, though, for now continuing to send a ripple of fear and a wave of travel restrictions around the globe. >> the world racing to shut out or at least slow down the alarming new covid variant first found in south africa. the w.h.o. officially naming it omicron. >> this variant has a large number of mutations, and some of these mutations have worrying characteristics. >> reporter: those mutations raiing fears it could be more contagious than delta and that existing vaccines may be less effective against it. starting monday, the white house closing america's border

that is where we find josh lederman. does the timing of this have anything to do with the rising gas prices? >> reporter: ironically, no, alex. it has more to do with the biden administration's efforts to wean us off of fossil fuels that contribute to global warming. so way back at the start of the biden administration, president biden sounded the alarm that american taxpayers were essentially getting ripped off by the leasing of millions of acres of public land that's owned by taxpayers like you and me that companies like exxon mobil are able to drill for oil and gas on. and the biden administration as they were trying to tackle climate change, they tried to put a pause on actually leasing those acres of land to companies to drill for gas and oil, but republican state attorneys general sued the biden administration. they've been successful so far, and so the biden administration has been forced to continue leasing that land. in the meantime, they have released this report from the interior department that found that ess

josh lederman, you have been following president biden. he has now released a statement about this. >> reporter: that's right. we have not seen president biden on camera today, katy. but he is now weighing in in a written statement, calling the death of ahmaud arbery a devastating reminder of how far we have to go for racial justice in this case country. i'll read a little bit of the statement to you. president biden saying, mr. arbery should be here today celebrating this holiday with his mother and with his father. nothing can bring mr. arbery back to his family and his community. but the verdict ensures that those who committed this horrible crime will be punished. the president going on in that written statement to say, while the guilty verdict reflects our justice system doing its job, that alone is not enough. and you know, this has been a case that president biden has been watching right from the very start, katy. he was a presidential candidate, the would-be nominee at the time that this death occurred. and within days, he said he
