josh shapiro has won the statewide office. figuring democratic politics, very managed candidate who knows how to raise funds. setting themselves up in this race good for republicans as probably the best path democrats could have offered. state senator doug maas triano won a contested republican primary to support pennsylvanians in that populace wing of the mega movement. -- the maga movement. she might not be the best candidate statewide even in the cycle for republicans to match a statewide general election audience. he has struggled. he has struggled in fundraising. josh shapiro has been on the air almost since the beginning of the general election, even during the primaries in some way trying to get maas triano and building an image that he is too extreme for pennsylvania. it has worked. at least from polling. host: when it comes to the senate race, it was the democrat john fetterman to support awes and 42%. that has changed. talk about why you think this is a close race versus what you are seeing for the republican and the

josh shapiro the democratic attorney general is the democratic nominee.e polls show him leading. pretty modest ad by mastriano late in the campaign. take us inside the strategy. >> it's a drop in the bucket. i don't think there's any other way you can describe it. $1 million ad buy in a state with so many media markets at a time that josh shapiro, and i have this number written down, $7.3 million in the last 30 days on ads alone. that's just in the last 30 days. it's a drop in the bucket at a time when mastriano is kind of in a perilous point in his campaign. there's been very little spending on air for mastriano. there's been a republican superpac that has spent on behalf of anti-shapiro ads. and the leader of that pac has signaled that they're getting squeamish, that they might stop some spending, they don't like the fact that mastriano has not closed any gaps in polling and they might stop airing those ads. so it seems like mastriano felt like he had to air these ads, had to put something out on tv to just get something on the market to take the race t

, a gubernatorial candidate, and every swing voter i've talked to is voting for josh shapiro. they are not going street for doug mastriano, the election denier, the guy who bused people to january 6th. but when it comes to the senate, i see a lot of these swing voters have been moving towards oz and away from john fetterman. so those voters are looking to split their ticket. in georgia, it's the opposite. you've got republican governor brian kemp, where a lot of these swing voters see him standing up to trump and certifying the election, as one of the reasons that they think that he's doing a good job and they're willing to vote for him. but on the other hand, the republican senatorial candidate, herschel walker, they were for the most part not going street for. it was a total split in the group, going kemp/warnock. and you can see in this states like ohio, where republican governor mike dewine, there's a lot of people -- he's running away with that race. and yet it's dead even between tim ryan and j.d. vance. and so you see a lot of split-ticket voters there. and so that's ju

you think about josh shapiro, who is a jewish man who is running for the united states senate or running state-wide in pennsylvania. the targeting is direct. then when you see vigilantes, i don't know if we can put the picture back up. vigilantes standing outside drop boxes. who uses drop boxes? lower income voters, people who were hourly jobs, students. people who can't take election day off. people who can't necessarily get to the polls and so the drop boxes are for them. that's who uses them. and trying to essentially scare people away. you had nazis marching in florida, waving desantis signs. he didn't even condemn it. it's at the point now where republicans can't even condemn naziism. they have embraced kanye west, and by the way, kanye west has no actual power. he's just an entertainer, but he's become sort of almost a thematic sort of member of their tribe. they're embracing him at just the time that he's submerging himself in anti-semitism. that's when he's tucker's best friend? it's so open and obvious now that it is a little bit frightening. >> well, and this is what's concerni

you've got to remember, one, a long way out, but josh shapiro looks like he is in a strong position.ing to have top of the ticket they're winning, probably, several points above 50%, or over 50%. that's a helpful dynamic for fetterman. there is no doubt. most of the gains have been oz, basically getting the vote he was going to get anyway. it's coming to his call. i'm sure, that sounds like a race going to come down to those four points, could be two points, could be a point, and so things like turnout in philadelphia, and in pittsburgh, you get the suburban margin, that josh shapiro is going to get, super important. pennsylvania is key just because that is the democrats best opportunity. i still think wisconsin is going to be close, but pennsylvania is the best opportunity for the democrats to steal the seat. when things are this close, again, in terms of that chest match, it's incredibly important. >> our last statement we were talking about, that georgia race in charles, bullet, university of georgia, was talking about that kemp or not voter in georgia who basically is saying, hey

judy: well, there you have the current democratic attorney general josh shapiro, who was running againstenator doug mastery on al. he is seen as someone who is on the more shall we say, extreme and of the republican party out of the mainstream of the party. he is not endorsed or supported by a number of republicans in the state. mastriano acknowledges that he took part in the riots at the u.s. capitol on january 6, he said he didn't go into the building but that he was there. certainly questions about that. he argues that donald trump actually won the 2020 election. he's taken other extreme positions that have given a lot of republicans pause, and as we said, they're not supporting him. so that has all in all been a problem, to put it mildly, for him. a number of republicans not giving him money. they're directing all of the money that they're giving to mehmet oz, which, of courshas helped his campaign. but you put it all together, this is seen as a campaign by an attorney general who had made a name for himself up against a republican who is very much struggling. still a campaign but a

there have been some, some other similar states like pennsylvania it feels like josh shapiro has a strongerdge at this point. but this might be the one difference is sort of the big outset standing for republican governors. they are involved in michigan and not in pennsylvania. i think witmer is still favored and the abortion issue is likely or not likely to pass. both chambers are competitive. if she does well enough you can see the democrats when the house and senate. thursday we had a piece about competitive state legislative chambers. so kind of the overlap in key swing states. host: 40% for republicans and 45% for democrats the gallup to pull of party affiliation 43% of those say they are independent. where did they fall? guest: all independents are sort of closet partisans. this a yearly more democratic relay more for republicans. you leave the number it will be reduced significantly. however, independents are still important there are people who swing between the two parties. democrats have been holding up ok with independents in senate races the question is what continues to the fin

i was in pittsburgh yesterday interviewing the current josh shapiro and his message is threats to democracy interwould he haven into the freedom message and h.r. doug mass try ando who was here on january 6 and dabbler in conspiracy theories. does the threat to democracy work in other parts of the country? we will find out. judy: you talk to a lot of people, too. >> i know what is going to happen. [laughter] >> it's my job. all we can do is look at the polls over the last month and swing for the republican party and how the polls have done this week, shifts in the generic ballot and shifts in places like georgia and herschel walker. and if this trend is real, you could expect it to shift. there was an additional swing against the president's party. once these things roll, they tend to continue. 538, the polling organization says it is down to a 20% chance and the odds are hurling against the democrats. and you could say with with we have sunk back to normal. the president's approval is in the 40's. and that is somewhat true. i do think a few weaknesses in the democratic approach has been re

president for both fetterman and the democratic governor for -- democratic candidate nor governor josh shapiro across the street, we were reporting from here and it was a wawa convenience store a week or so ago. it is now cleared out and they shut it down because of crime, which of course is a big issue in the race. i give you the latest statistics on crime. they're not pretty in philadelphia. retail theft up 53%. that is what sort of drove the folks at wawa out of business here. commercial burglaries up almost 50%, robbery specifically with a gun up almost 50% too. lot of people blame the new progressive district attorney larry krasner for some of those increases because of what some would perceive is de-emphasis on prosecution of crime. worth noting krasner got about 70% of the vote so he has support but also worth noting the wall street editorial of the wall street editorial board pointing out this week in philadelphia, we hit 1,000 murders. in the same two year period before krasner took office, it was half those numbers. even some of the folks in the city that support his progressive chan

and in pennsylvania, we have josh shapiro and mehmet oz seen as centrist candidates and the democratic extremist outside of the mainstream. >> shannon: juan, what are you watching you think democrats will hold on to or multiimmel? want i think they will win in arizona, picking up on what we were talking about, you will see sflit votes and people are writing about that. i think if you're looking for interesting races even beyond washington, i looked at that race in oklahoma for governor, kevin stitt and joy hofmeister and the idea democrat could win in a red state, is pretty ashgsz mazing and reflects the idea that we've got an election where turnout is key, get your people to the poll and what we've seen with early voting is big turnout. both sides are highly energized and he was saying crime is out of control, this is another messaging and crime is higher here in oklahoma than in new york or l.a., he said no, turns she was right. >> shannon: do we think we will see the president out more in some of the races? >> catherine: he's been out quite eight bit, been in pennsylvania, going bac
