. >> reporter: joshua hornsby mied to his daughter's school i herday. she was a third grader at plasma tower's elementary. he got there ten minutes too tte. >> i had to park around a corner from the school. when i hit the corner, where i could see school, the school was gone. and my heart just sank. >> reporter: yolanda hornsby was the nine-year-old girl's grandmother. eu were looking everywhere. ki we were looking everywhere. everywhere that we thought we could look or where they may have said that she may have been taken or we were just... we were reoking. >> and trying not to believe the okint. >> and trying not to believe the worst. >> reporter: at 8:30 this morning joshua hornsby's phone rang. >> it was the medical examiner. he told me that they had my daughter. hd i didn't... i knew what he want but i didn't want to accept it so i kept asking what do you mean? she's with you. what is she doing? that's when he told me she was oldeased. that was it. >> it's like taking a piece out of my heart and just like stomping on it. to come to terms with that,

but joshua hornsby, he got to me. this guy was so collected, but so passionate.ou could see it in his eyes, when he was talking about his little girl. with you see for yourself. >> she was just sunshine on a riny day, you know. there's no way to explain it. she was just happy. always happy. always outgoing. she was just jenae. everybody loved her. and tried to keep the memories in her. and dot best i can. >> my sunshine on a rainy day. that's how he remembers his daughter. i think so many people can relate. we all know 9-year-olds in our life and to think about the tragedy that the kids went through at that school. it is heart breaking to note that this community will have to rebound and come together around the hornsby family. joshua has one other daughter, gia, two years old. and so, joshua is now a single dad raising his youngest daughter. and again, they have just gone through so much in the last 12 months. i'm not sure how he is keeping it all together. he just said, we spoke off camera, he said, i'm just trying to be calm, because if i didn't, i don't know

. >> reporter: martin, we had an opportunity to meet joshua hornsby. the name janay hornsby might be familiar to many. she is the first identified victim of the storm. she was 9 years old. and she attended plaza towers middle school, the elementary school that was demolished by this storm system. and that is the same school where other children perished. but we learned of her name the other day and started to get pictures of this beautiful child with the beautiful smile. and today we met her father. a quiet man with a simple message about his daughter. what was janay like? what was your daughter like? >> she was a -- she was loving, caring, fun, energetic. she was just sunshine on a rainy day, you know. she -- there's no way to explain her. she was just happy. always happy. always outgoing. she was just janay. >> reporter: you'll probably notice that when joshua said she was my sunshine on a rainy day his face totally lit up saying the word "sunshine." this is a dad with a very quiet confidence about him in talking about his daughter. very calm about it

joshua hornsby is jenae's father.shua, first, our heart felt condolences for what you and your family are going through. when did you realize she might have been in danger? when did you know to go to the school? >> well, i was getting phone calls saying that the tornado was headed toward the school. probably around 2:45, 2:50 something like that. >> and you rushed right to the school but traffic got in your way? >> yeah. >> how long did it take you to get there? >> probably about 30 minutes. >> by the time you got there, what did you see? >> the school was gone. it was just a pile of debris and everything. >> were you trying to be part of the first response team to get in there? what did you do? how did you react? >> the first response team was already in action when i got there. but i just was looking for my daughter and if i could help anybody, i was trying to help, but mostly i was trying to find my daughter. >> when were you notified? >> yesterday morning. >> and at the time, i know when i arrived here late monday
