joyce thomas said the caller was so convincing. she was sure her grandson was calling to say he was in trouble and needed help. he had been in an accident. someone was hurt. he was locked upnd grand to spring him from jail. joyce, sprang into action. within a few hour, she knew she had been scammed. here's part of her story. >> i said is this jonathan? you know, i used that name, and he said yes. i said what's wrong? he said i really, i really am in trouble. and i'm really sorry to call but i really need your help. he said i was in a car accident. and i was speeding and i went through a red light and i accidently hit another car. and the person in the other car was hurt really badly. so they put me in jail. and i said my goodness, where are you? he said you know, it's a county jail. he said the word county. so i didn't go back and ask him which county. and whatnot. >> from there, the scam worked like this. so-called jonathan put her in touch with man claiming to be a public defender. who put her so-called bail bonds man who gave he

[phone rings] tom: recently joyce thomas of silver spring got a call. >> he said, grandma, do you knowho this is? said it sounds like jonathan. he said yes. tom: she realized that is how the scammer learned her grandson's name, from her. accident, speeding, i'm in jail. tom: another man called and said he needed five grand for bail. went to husband and i the bank assuming this was true, very emotional. tom: after wiring the money, she spoke to a third person. they then asked for more money. she eventually called her grandson, even though the scammer said his phone had been taken away. >> he said i don't do we were talking about. i said somebody called and said you were in jail. he said, grandma, that was a scam. tom: she is working with the police and the bank to try to get her money back. she hopes this interview saves somebody else from doing this. >> i got caught up in the story and did not have time to think. as i started to think, stepping back, i realized there were a number of red flags. tom: montgomery county police different people in recent weeks and they each lost $5,000. to

thomas, back over to you. mayfair resident pay tribute to homeless man beat tone death by group of teenagers. >> this as police continue to search for his killer or killers. jenny joycee headquarters with the latest this morning, jenny? >> good morning, thomas. yes, there was candlelight vigil held last night, our dawn timoney was out there, this as police continue to investigate this man's murder, what we do know, police have identified at least one of the teens involved, apparently left hess cell phone near the scene, interviewed by investigators but not yet charged. meanwhile the family and friend he kevin cullen say they're anxious for justice, it was around 6:00 sunday night, cullen, homeless, mayfair, was brutally beaten by pack of teens. he later died. last night, people who knew cullen, and some who didn't, attended a vigil to honor the life of a man they say was very nice. police tell us he suffered a have i lent death, the man's head was smashed against the side after house, 4200 block of logger street. one woman found him and stayed with him until help arrived. but cullen did not make it. cullen's siblings say they're grateful for this woman's actions and

let's get out to jenny joyce live at headquarters this morning, hi, jen. >> i good morning, thomas, chargesed, but we do believe that police are getting closer. they have at least identified one of the teens involved. the brutal murder of kevin cullen has impacted the mayfair community last night, neighbors, friends, and family members, gathered at the scene of sunday attack and held vigil to honor cullen's memory. the 57 year old man was a graduate of father judge high school. he was born and raised in mayfair, and while he was homeless he never strayed too far from the neighborhood, and sadly, this is where he died. police say a group of teens smashed cullen's head into the side after house on the 4200 block of logger street. he was transported to the hospital where he died. people who knew cullen say he was a very kind man, and they're horrified by the details every his death. >> we can't continue to hide behind our curtains and be afraid. this was a very cowardly act, and it is a shame, it cost someone their life for us to be out here on a night like this. >> it was a real shock to hear

lets get tout jenny joyce joining us live from police headquarters, jenny. >> reporter: good morning, thomas. all day yesterday homicide detectives were out back at this scene trying to talk to people seeing if anybody knew anything about the shooting that left a 16 year-old dead, they are trying to find that shooter, as family, friends and neighbors grief, a life lost too soon, a memorial now marks the spot on north 19th street where the teen was shot , killed, family members say that he was a trip let one of eight boys in the house, police say saturday night victim was on it talking with friends, fellow children on a neighbor's front steps at north 19th and somerset street when a gunman approached and fired multiple times. sixteen year-old was pronounced at the scene, 12 year-old friend took a bum tote leg, transported and later released from hot according to family members. people on the block gathered sunday, two women tell us their children were friends with the 16 year-old victim. >> oh, sweet as pie, sweet as pie. smile to brighten up the whole day. >> just turn yourself in. that is b

our jenny joyce joining us from port richmond with more, hype, jenny. >> reporter: good morning, thomas, right now police are calling this a sudden death investigation. they don't have any information to prove otherwise. but they are working every angle to confirm a cause of death right now. the scene was alarming last night, police called here to the 2500 block of lehigh avenue, in port richmond. just before 9:30 for the report after 80 year old man, home, apparently there was a lot of blood here at the scene, crime scene unit responded to collect evidence in homicide detectives folds to get to the bottom of it, family members say they saw the victim, earlier in the day, when they returned home around 9:00 last night, they found their loved one lying dead on the kitchen floor, covered in blood. police say their investigating whether the victim fell, hit hit his head and died or if this was, in fact, a homicide. but police on scene, again, say there was no sign after break-in or any type of burglary to learn more police are interviewing several people at police headquarters. >> anyone w

thomas back to you. >>> lets get to that break news in burlington county, new jersey, we know a man is dead after a hit and run on the highway. jenny joyce in maple shade with the very latest, jenny. >> reporter: good morning, guys, hit and run happened behind me on route 73, southbound, in maple shade, police tell us that they have caught the driver, they are processing everything back at the police station right now. this hit/run happened just after 12:30 this morning, officers had been out here performing accident reconstruction to get a better sense of how all this happened police tell us overnight emergency responders arrived to find a man unconscious on the highway, investigators say he was hit by a car that just kept on going, that is according to initial reports, again, police say officers have since found the driver, victim was transported to a near bay hospital where he was pronounced. maple shade police have in the shared any information about who that man is or any details about the accident. taking a live look back here at the scene while police say they don't expect to be here much longer, for now still only one lane is get
